Marking the day, we had an insightful conversation with Dr. Arvinder Soin, Chairman and Chief Surgeon at Medanta Institute of Liver Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine, Gurugram, Haryana. During the chat, Dr Soin shared expert guidance on how small changes in the daily lifestyle can protect and revitalise liver function, myths about liver health and early warning signs.

Q: Which daily lifestyle factors are the most important for your liver health, and how do you safely and sustainably make some simple changes to care for the liver even if you are feeling completely well?
Dr Soin: Overall, liver health is about what you do every day - diet, movement, alcohol, and stress management. The most important factors are:
&bull; Your Diet: If you eat the typical American diet (processed food, sugar-sweetened beverages, unhealthy fats, etc), then it will cause you to store fat in your liver. Whole grains, whole fresh vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats support optimal liver function.
&bull; Alcohol: Regular excessive use of alcohol is a huge contributor to liver damage. Not just drinking excessively but drinking moderately for several years can also lead to liver damage.&nbsp;
&bull;Exercise: Regular exercise will allow you to maintain a healthy body weight, healthy muscle mass, and healthy metabolism which are all important for a healthy and fat-free liver.&nbsp;
&bull; Sleep and Stress: Interrupted sleep and chronic stress can lead to inflammation, disrupted hormonal cycle, and changes in liver enzymes and liver function.
Changes in the diet to avoid sugary drinks and replace them with water or herbal tea, eating more fibre foods like oats, lentils, and greens; not drinking alcohol; exercising for 45 minutes regularly; and having a way to manage your stress through mindfulness, mindfulness or relaxation techniques.
2. What dietary and lifestyle choices can we make to develop a healthy gut-liver connection that supports long-term health?
Dr Soin: The gut and liver are highly interconnected. Gut microbiome health influences liver function. If the gut balance of bacteria is compromised (due to diet, antibiotic use, too much-processed food, alcohol consumption, ongoing stress etc.), the gut permeability can increase and things like toxins or bacteria meant to be eliminated from the gut can transfer through the gut barrier into the blood, and liver, which can lead to inflammation and damage to tissues and organs past the gut.
To support the connection between gut health and liver health:
&bull; &nbsp; &nbsp;Eat Food that Supports Good Bacteria: Prebiotics (i.e. garlic, onions, bananas) promote the good bacteria. Probiotics (i.e. yoghurt, kefir, fermented foods) are types of good/gut bacteria that support a balanced gut microbiome. &bull; &nbsp; &nbsp;Limit Processed Foods and Added Sugar: Both can upset the balance of bacteria in the gut. &bull; &nbsp; &nbsp;Evaluate Antibiotic Use: Antibiotics can deplete both good and bad bacteria and should be used cautiously. &bull; &nbsp; &nbsp;Eat Plenty of Fibre: Fibre from whole plant foods keeps digestion moving, in addition to toxin elimination. &bull; &nbsp; &nbsp;Hydrate: When you drink 2.5-3 litres of water daily, you will support the detoxification function of your liver.

Dr Soin: Liver disease is frequently called "silent" as it may be developing without any obvious signs and symptoms at early stages. Often, the signs are subtle and may be related to other health problems. Some indicators that may suggest a problem include- feeling tired or fatigued; abdominal discomfort or bloating; sudden unexplained weight gain or loss; darkened urine or pale stools; persistent itchiness of the skin; noticeable yellowish skin or eyes (jaundice); and impairment to one's ability to concentrate. Recognising and knowing these symptoms is important as the sooner liver disease is discovered and treated, the less likely it is to cause serious complications or impact long-term health.

While getting liver disease from alcohol is a serious risk factor, the number of people suffering from Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is caused by obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and poor diet and health practices, is now greater than that of individuals with alcoholic liver disease. Another common myth is that liver damage is inevitably irreversible. In many of those cases, lifestyle changes and early treatment can slow, halt, and in some cases, reverse fatty liver and fibrotic inflammation.

There has been a rise of vegetarian food globally. The Google search for vegan food reportedly has risen by 5000% since 2021. This rise in vegetarian food is accompanied by shifting trends in the food industry where restaurants are looking at catering to vegetarian audiences. Even high-end restaurants blooming from Dubai are now looking at vegetarian food as their target food market.
 If you are passionate about food, there is no way you haven&rsquo;t heard of the Dubai based vegetarian - no paneer, no mushroom Michelin star restaurant - Avatara. The Mumbai outlet recently launched their new menu spearheaded by Chef Sanket Joshi. The menu is called Rasas and is inspired by the six tastes of Ayurveda - sweet, sour, salty, bitter, astringent and spicy. And the meal does justice to each rasa.

 Avatara is a sixteen-course extravaganza. Take out at least an hour and a half to enjoy the full experience. Each dish comes with unique cutlery and bear in mind - eating instructions to enjoy. Tasting menus seem to be the new trend within the luxury dining industry in India. &ldquo;A tasting menu provides a trip through a variety of flavours, ingredients, and well-chosen meals, something that &agrave; la carte options might not always deliver. Diners get a concept-driven experience with a chef&rsquo;s tasting menu, learning more about each dish, its history, and its inspiration. It's a full experience" says Joshi.
 The first course itself begins with lavana made of beetroot, ghee roast and appalam. Amla is made of butternut dhokla, black lime pickle and fafda. Katu is made of sago wada, charred pepper and peanut relish. Named Kallingam, it came with grilled watermelon, stone fruit pickle and tomato water. Next up was kokum, which I gulped in just a bite - made of sunchoke modak, okra thecha and kokum rassa. I was blown.
 Then came dallika, meaning lentil and I wasnt prepared to see this version of deconstructed lentil on my table. Horse gram galouti served with lentil tea and topped up with edible fresh flowers. Little could I have imagined in my wildest dreams that a fusion of Indian food could ever even look like this. Next up was banana chaat topped with avocados. There&rsquo;s no easy way to explain what the milieu of flavours tasted like. It was truly spectacular and like something I had never tasted before.

While each dish had a mix of winning ingredients, there was one overarching ingredient in each course which was the clear winner. It seemed like the chef had named the courses after these winner dinners. Klayaah was unique in terms of being a fusion of Italian and Indian. Imagine Cannoli stuffed with green peas served around a gajar jhol. Yes, it is tough to imagine but delicious to eat. Of course there were more mains but the desserts are what I want to speak about.
 The desserts at Avatara were pretty much the same as the initial menu they launched with. Perhaps, they already chose the deserts which were best from diverse regions of India and wanted to present it on the plate. I truly enjoyed the Madhuram, inspired by the Garwhal region of Uttarakhand. Made of buransh juice, chocolate rosette and bal mithai, this dessert cannot easily be found in other restaurants. A lot of research goes into finding what is native and local to a place and then curating that on a menu. &ldquo;The industry has evolved beyond just serving food&mdash;restaurants today focus on creating immersive, multi-sensory experiences that leave a lasting impression. Creativity has no limits, and modern dining is a leading example of innovation.&ldquo; says Joshi.
 I truly enjoyed my experience. It was refreshing, fun and educational. I got a sneak peak into what Michelin chefs think and cook like, in my own city in Mumbai. I feel like the city is going places because restaurants like this give people a lot to look forward to.

We come from a family that's big into food. My mom is a great chef and we love her food. A lot of the interactions with my family - happy or sad happen over lunch or dinner. We all go from our homes to my mom&rsquo;s home and enjoy a meal together at least once a week. I wanted to extend our galaxy table to a restaurant and that&rsquo;s where Mercii comes in.<o:p></o:p>
<h2 class="MsoNormal"> 2. Where are the interiors inspired from?<o:p></o:p></h2>
We tried doing the interiors from Mumbai but what they were doing was quite typical to all the other places in Mumbai. I wanted to create a vibe which is fresh - something like Bagatelle from Dubai, where you can enjoy a meal and it converts to a party place. We ended up meeting at the Creative Clinic in Dubai and they came up with great renders. After we gave them our inputs, we wanted to create a family restaurant that the grandparents, children and grandchildren can come in together. I wanted bright walls and bright interiors. When you dine here, you can see the sky on top. Eat indoors but still feel like you are outdoors. We have tried to make the space as happy as possible for people.<o:p></o:p>

Mercii in French means thank you. I believe the universe has been so kind to us that we should say thank you and showcase gratitude more often. I believe the newer generation moves really fast and sometimes forgets to say thank you. This was my way of saying thank you to the universe. Whenever you say Mercii, you are being grateful.<o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>
<h2 class="MsoNormal">4. Since your cuisine is inspired by Europe, what have been your memorable experiences there?<o:p></o:p></h2>
I extensively travel every summer and I have been going to Europe since I was a child. I enjoy a diversity of food and cuisines from across the world. We try the different ceviches, gazpachos, pizzas and pastas there. I wanted to bring these dishes back here. I was inspired by LPM and wanted to be as close to that as I could. This is as authentic European as I could go to. I wanted to move away from casual Indian, Chinese and Japanese restaurants. I wanted to do something unique. I wanted to do specific European food.

We have more than 75 to 80 dishes on the menu because variety plays an important role. I feel everyone coming here should be able to get something they like. Intake of insufficiently filtered coffee during working hours could be an overlooked factor for cardiovascular health due to its effect on plasma cholesterol concentrations."
LDL cholesterol is associated with bad cardiovascular health as it forms plaque in the heart. One such component found in coffee samples collected was leading to increased LDL. The reason is that the machines used metal filters and not paper. This leads to elevated cafestol levels of 176 mg/L, which is higher than the 12 mg/L found in traditional paper-filtered coffee.

Made popular in 2022 by TikToker Mandy Lee, it asks women to use their vaginal discharge as an "all-natural" perfume.&nbsp;
If claims are to be believed, a woman's vaginal discharge contains pheromones&mdash;chemicals that can supposedly help a person attract a mate in an animalistic way.
But, is there any truth to these claims? As a single lady, should you use this method to attract a mate? We asked Seema Anand, a popular content creator known for her unabashed, sex-positive content on Instagram, as to what she thinks about the TikTok trend 'vabbing'.
<h2>Vabbing: A weird trend or a sure-shot way to attract men?</h2>
According to Seema Anand, while the "natural smell of a healthy vagina is very exciting and a super fabulous smell," it might not be the best idea to wear it as a perfume.
"Anytime you take fluids that are supposed to be inside the body, and you put them on the outside, allowing it to dry up, there's bound to be some kind of bacteria," she warns.
Vaginal fluids and semen, are "not really created to be on the outside and be there for long periods of time," said Seema, a storyteller who incorporates teachings from the Kama Sutra in her videos and public talks.
She noted that it's standard advice to wash up after sex or masturbation because of the risk of infection in genitals- a sensitive body part.
Seema acknowledged that while she "wouldn't be able to say whether there is a huge amount of health risk," vabbing "is not the healthiest thing in the world".
Seema, the self-proclaimed 'Patron Saint of Pleasure', noted that our genitals have a certain musky scent to them, which has been used as one of the notes in several perfumes. For example, "Secretions Magnifiques" by Etat Libre d'Orange evokes the smell of sweat, semen, or other bodily fluids.&nbsp;
However, she said that in these perfumes, it is just one of the many notes complemented by other scents.
Seema, who is an acknowledged authority on the Kama Sutra, said that in the ancient Indian Sanskrit text&mdash;that deals with sexuality, eroticism and emotional fulfillment- there are many mentions of perfuming of the body. But she noted that "each part of the body has a role to play. And so you have to fragrance it accordingly".
Comparing the smell of a forest after rain with the smell of different body parts, she said, "It as a combination. Almost like a composite whole. It's the same for the body according to Kama Sutra."
"How it smells in and around your vagina is not necessarily how it will smell on other parts of your body," she added.
Instead of using the TikTok trend as a "sure shot" way to attract men, Seema suggests that it can be used as a method of normalising the scents that come with sex; especially the female scent that people on social media often label as "fishy".
"There are so many men who have never been with a woman, have never touched a woman, they'll tell you, ah, it smells like fish," said the storyteller.
"They have no idea what it (a vagina) smells like. And it doesn't smell like fish. And we need to normalise what it smells like," she added.

For anyone who&rsquo;s into watching theatre, Phantom Of The Opera is not something you can afford to miss. The play is in Mumbai, India at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Bandra. It is playing from March 5 to March 30 with shows in the afternoons and evenings.&nbsp;
As someone who has watched over 15 Broadway theatre shows including Frozen, Lion King, The Dry House, Mamma Mia, Life of Pi, Matilda and many others, I found Phantom Of The Opera to be the best show ever. Initially, I had heard about the show on social media and assumed it was overhyped but still wanted to give it a try. Also, I didn&rsquo;t exactly think I was into opera music because I almost never understood it.&nbsp;
However, in Act One itself when the chandelier was introduced, I knew the play was like no other. In terms of set production, each individual set for the acts in Phantom Of The Opera is purely unique. The play dragged me to the Victorian era with high-end costumes, mystery, ghastly vibes and a never-before-seen amalgamation of the arts. From watching ballet dancers, opera performances, musical notes and drama on stage, there&rsquo;s a lot to look forward to.&nbsp;
I remember a trip to Vegas where we watched the Bolshoi Ballet show at the Bellagio theatre, memories from that performance came back to me as I watched Phantom Of The Opera. The lead actress Christine could do everything from sing, ballet, opera, high end acting and so much more. I also liked how phantom acted during the play, it was a daring balancing act between being a beauty and beast himself.
For me the Victorian costumes stood out to me during the play. With each costume intricately designed and embroidered, my fellow audience members were seen gasping for breath when the curtains rose and costumes were revealed. I&rsquo;ve never seen the audience react like this - not even during Lion King where each costume is planned and designed. For me, during Phantom Of The Opera, what stood out most was also the audience's reaction.&nbsp;
A part of me could resonate more with Phantom than with Christine. I have always felt like there are some ugly parts of me that I can never show to my partner in a relationship. There are also parts of me that are tough to love and I&rsquo;m scared of being judged. I see myself isolating from the world, from my own thoughts even - only to feel okay with myself. Phantom plays the piano, I sit and write.&nbsp;
For me I was partly heartbroken when phantom&rsquo;s love was not reciprocated by Christine. Phantom gave it his all, he opened his heart, showed his ugliness, displayed the beauty of his affection and kindness. If Phantom can&rsquo;t find love, how can I?&nbsp;
Even though the set was beautiful, dark, gothic, mysterious, and delicate all at once - I could see the darkness of Phantom melting away into the delicate and sweet nature of Christine. The feminist in me wouldn&rsquo;t have approved such a production but this was a theatrical from the Victorian era. It shouldn&rsquo;t be judged for being more than that. While the play might not reflect on our times, it does reflect on the beauty, beast, beauty without the beast and shows how Christine is in a good position to choose what she wants for herself. She doesn&rsquo;t need a man to tell her what she wants in life. She&rsquo;s in love with the Count and there&rsquo;s no dispelling that.&nbsp;

With a beautiful night room of mirrors, graveyard, dispelling court room that acts as an office space, grand staircase and of course Phantom&rsquo;s stunning house which has ancient candle holders and is set in the middle of a lake. The fact that this Victorian set creates nostalgia and makes us crave for other times that have gone by is a gentle reminder of the world we live in and of what we hold dear.&nbsp;
While words come to those who speak them, the Phantom lurks and takes away musician&rsquo;s voices, killing them, only because Christine isn&rsquo;t his. Pure vengeance. A theatre taking place in a theatre. Almost a double entendre.&nbsp;
What I wished to be different in the play was surely Phantom and Christine ending up together. For if Phantom can be loved, I can be loved too.&nbsp;
