Tragedy struck Rockford, Illinois on Wednesday afternoon (Mar 27) as four people were killed and five injured in a stabbing spree.

Of the four people killed in the attack, one was a 15-year-old girl. Other victims include a 63-year-old woman, a 49-year-old man, and a 22-year-old man. One victim, as per Caruana, was a postal worker. Their identities are yet to be revealed.

As per reports, of the five injured in the attack, four are in stable condition, and one is in critical condition.

<h2>Suspect in custody</h2>

As per local media reports citing Rockford police, the suspect, a 22-year-old man, was apprehended by the police at 1:35 pm, and was in custody. As of now, the motive for the attack has not been determined.

CBS News reports that not all the victims were stabbed. However, no gunshots were reported.

Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd reported that they received the first call seeking medical assistance in the 2300 block of Holmes at around 1:15 pm (local time). This was followed by additional calls for police and paramedics at various locations in Rockford and Winnebago County.

In a statement, the police said: "On Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at approximately 1:14 pm, Rockford Police officers responded to multiple addresses in the area of Holmes Street, Winnetka Drive, and Cleveland Avenue."&nbsp;

"We are currently working through the details of the investigation and further updates will follow as the investigation continues. The suspect, a 22-year-old male, was located in the same area and taken into custody at 1:35 pm," it added.

<h2>Home invasion?</h2>

As per the Winnebago County Sheriff, Gary Caruana, a home invasion was reported near the intersection of Florence and Eggleston.

The home invasion resulted in a young woman being stabbed in the face and hands and getting seriously wounded. A Good Samaritan who tried to help her was also stabbed.&nbsp;

Disney and allies of Gov. Ron DeSantis reached a settlement agreement on Wednesday (Mar&nbsp;27) in a state court dispute concerning Walt Disney World's future development after the governor of Florida assumed control of the theme park resort.

The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District board members approved the settlement agreement during a meeting, bringing an end to nearly two years of court case that had been sparked by DeSantis assuming control of the district from Disney supporters after the latter objected to Florida's so-called ‘Don't Say Gay’ law.

The Republican governor, who was using Disney as a punching bag in speeches until he halted his presidential campaign this year, pushed for the 2022 law, which forbids teachings on sexual orientation and gender identity in early grades.

For the majority of its 50 years, the district which offers municipal services including planning, firefighting, and mosquito control was governed by fans of Disney.

Jeff Vahle, president of Walt Disney World Resort, said in a statement that the company was pleased a settlement had been reached.

“This agreement opens a new chapter of constructive engagement with the new leadership of the district and serves the interests of all parties by enabling significant continued investment and the creation of thousands of direct and indirect jobs and economic opportunity in the state,” Vahle said.

In response to Disney's opposition to the law, DeSantis assumed control of the governing district through legislation passed by the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature and appointed a new board of supervisors.&nbsp;

Disney filed a lawsuit against DeSantis and his appointees, alleging violation of the company's free speech rights for speaking out against the legislation. In January, a federal judge dismissed the lawsuit.

Prior to the transition of control from Disney allies to DeSantis appointees early last year, the Disney supporters on the board entered into agreements with Disney, transferring control over design and construction at Disney World to the company.&nbsp;

The new DeSantis appointees argued that these last-minute deals diminished their authority, prompting the district to file a lawsuit against the company in state court in Orlando seeking to void the contracts. 
 
Disney filed counterclaims that include asking the state court to declare the agreements valid and enforceable.

Under the terms of Wednesday’s settlement agreement, Disney lets stand a determination by the board of DeSantis-appointees that the all-inclusive plan approved by the Disney supporters before the takeover are null and void. Disney also agrees that a development agreement and restrictive covenants passed before the takeover are also not valid, according to the settlement terms.

Rather than implementing a new plan, the existing comprehensive plan from 2020 will be utilised, with the newly appointed board having the authority to make modifications as needed.&nbsp;

Additionally, the agreement indicates that Disney and the new board will engage in negotiations to establish a new development agreement in the coming days.

The dollar climbed on Wednesday in the wake of more strong U.S. economic data, nudging the Japanese yen to a 34-year low and into the zone that drew official market intervention in 2022.

The yen traded at 151.97 per dollar in the Asia session, down about 0.2% and weaker than 151.94 where Japanese authorities stepped in during October 2022 to buy the currency and its weakest level since the middle of 1990.

For the quarter ending later this week the yen is the worst-performing major, down more than 7% on the dollar even after Japan's exit last week from negative interest rates.

Officials have been making near daily warnings against speculative moves and markets are jittery about a test of 152 per dollar as Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki said Japan won't rule out any steps if it thinks the yen is falling too fast.

"The market is very sensitive to the 152 area," said National Australia Bank strategist Rodrigo Catril.

"If we were to break that level then recent history would suggest that intervention would be much more likely."

BOJ policymaker Naoki Tamura said on Wednesday the central bank must proceed slowly but steadily toward normalising its policies - seemingly giving the yen a little push weaker.

Australian data published in the morning showed inflation holding at a two-year low of 3.4% in February, reinforcing market wagers that the next move in interest rates would be down. The Aussie slipped 0.3% to $0.6515.

It is down 4.4% for the quarter. Other moves in Asia were kept in check as markets wait for Friday's release of U.S. core inflation data.

A search effort was carried on, however, the rescue mission has been halted now. Officials are deeming survival in the freezing, debris-laden waters highly unlikely.

Among those lost, the 38-year-old Sandoval was remembered as a devoted family man and an entrepreneur.

Hailing from Honduras, Sandoval had sought a better life in the US for nearly two decades. He leaves behind a wife and two children - an 18-year-old son and a 5-year-old daughter.&nbsp;

Similarly, Miguel Luna, a father of three, was also among the victims. Luna, originally from El Salvador and his wife ran a food truck. Luna does not have fluency in English so to communicate the news, people will have to rely on a translation app for communication.

As per&nbsp;Reuters, officials from the US Coast Guard and the Maryland State Police said that given the length of time that has elapsed since the bridge collapse and the frigid temperatures of the waters, there was little, if any, chance that the six missing workers could be found alive.

According to CBS News, the non-profit organization CASA has identified one of the missing workers as Miguel Luna from El Salvador.

While an official statement is yet to confirm their nationalities,&nbsp;as per local media reports,&nbsp;the other workers were citizens of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.

In the early hours of Tuesday, according to a buoy that collects data for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the temperature in the river was around 8C (47F).

The Guardian reports that recovery efforts will continue tomorrow (Wednesday, Mar 27) with a team of divers.

As per Reuters citing officials, there is no evidence of foul play. The massive cargo ship was crippled by power loss when it crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge over the mouth of the Patapsco River at about 1:30 am (0530 GMT).

Dali, the Singapore-flagged container vessel, was heading out of the harbour bound for Sri Lanka at the time. The impact caused a trestled section of the 1.6-mile (2.57 km) span to almost immediately crumple into the icy water.

This sent vehicles and people into the river. However, thanks to the fact that the ship reported a power failure before impact, officials had stopped traffic on the bridge before the collapse.

"By being able to stop cars from coming over the bridge, these people are heroes. They saved lives last night," said Maryland Governor Wes Moore at a news briefing. Moore assured people that the bridge was up to code and there were no known structural issues.

<h2>Government to help rebuild the bridge</h2>

Speaking from the White House ahead of a trip to North Carolina, US President Joe Biden pledged that the federal government will pay the full cost to rebuild the Baltimore bridge and help restore one of the nation's busiest arteries.

Calling the collision a "terrible accident" Biden said, "It's my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge and I expect the Congress to support my effort."

When asked why the federal government should pick the tab instead of the ship operator, he said: "That could be, but we're not going to wait for that to happen. We're going to pay for it to get the bridge rebuilt and opened," and that&nbsp;15,000 US jobs "depend on that port." He also said he would visit Baltimore but did not specify when.

A chilling audio recording has emerged in which&nbsp;Baltimore officials can be heard rushing and making last-minute efforts to stop the traffic heading towards the bridge, seconds before it collapsed after it was hit by a cargo ship.

The crew on the ship gave a mayday call moments before it crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday morning (Mar 27) which allowed the traffic authorities to stop the vehicles, said Maryland's Governor Wes Moore.&nbsp;

Nearly 90 seconds after the crew's mayday call, another person was heard reporting the collapse of the bridge in the audio.&nbsp;

"I need one of you guys on the south side, one of you guys on the north side, hold all traffic on the Key Bridge," one person was heard saying.&nbsp;

"There's a ship approaching that just lost their steering so until we get that under control, we've got to stop all traffic. The whole bridge just fell down. Start, start whoever … everybody. The whole bridge just collapsed," they added.

Noland Arbaugh, the first person to get a Neuralink brain-computer interface (BCI) implanted, came to know about the Elon Musk-owned company's human trials in chaotic fashion.

The 29-year-old Arbaugh, who became paralysed after a diving accident eight years ago said during an interview with the Wall Street Journal, that he came to know about Neuralink six months ago, thanks to a drunk phone call from a friend.

His friend called him up while under the influence to tell him that Neuralink was looking for its first human trial patient. He helped Arbaugh fill out the application, but apparently misspelled his name in the process.

It's an unsurprising anecdote from the Arizona-based young man, who as per Neuralink engineer Bliss Chapman, said his favourite game was Beerio Cart, a clearly alcohol-tinged variant on the party game Mario Kart that Arbaugh was seen playing with his mind in an impressive demo posted last week.

Despite his somewhat energetic behaviour, Arbaugh appears to be a willing and promising test subject for Musk's brain implant project, as Neuralink staff boasted in a videotaped presentation last week.

Another video that Arbaugh posted on his own X account during the nearly hour-long address to Neuralink employees shows the young man breaking a timing record when learning to control a cursor with his BCI.

Chapman claims that this was only on the seventh hour of the man's first day of using his brain chip.

Arbaugh told that the process of becoming Neuralink's first-ever human patient wasn't as intense as one might expect.

"Brain surgery was easy," he told the WSJ newspaper. "I was expecting a much longer recovery time, and they kicked me out of the hospital like a day later."

It was challenging, though, to balance the benefits and drawbacks of becoming the face of Neuralink.

"I definitely took time to step back and evaluate all of the downsides that I could be bringing to my family," Arbaugh stated. "Not just the health downsides — things that could have happened during surgery or afterwards — but everything that comes with this, like any notoriety."
