New York is already an expensive place to travel, but things have just become worse,&nbsp;transit authorities authorised a controversial $15 toll for cars entering the busiest area of Manhattan, which is scheduled to go into force in mid-June.

In an attempt to promote public transportation use and ease traffic in town and lower Manhattan, the board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York voted 11-1 to charge the congestion toll. This will help decrease pollution.

The price, which is comparable to current programmes in Singapore, London, and Stockholm, will be the first of its kind in an American city. Federal approval is initially required, and then toll collection mechanisms must be established.

Along with any existing bridge or tunnel taxes, drivers entering Manhattan south of 60th Street from Queens, Brooklyn, and neighbouring New Jersey will be charged $15 during the day and $3.75 at night for passengers and small commercial vehicles.

During the day, trucks and sightseeing buses will pay between $24 and $36; at night, they will pay less. According to the MTA, ridesharing services like Uber will be allowed to charge $2.50 each trip, while taxis would charge $1.25 for each passenger into the zone.

Specialised city cars, emergency vehicles, and vehicles transporting individuals with disabilities will be the only ones excluded. Drivers in the congestion zone with low incomes will be eligible for discounted costs.

MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber called the vote "one of the most significant the board has ever undertaken," and said in a statement, "The MTA is ready."

But critics, especially already stressed-out commuters, have howled over the new toll, and several lawsuits are already under way.

The research paper <a href="https://www.aspi.org.au/report/deterring-attack-taiwan-policy-options-india-and-other-non-belligerent-states">published</a> by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute [ASPI] noted that India's policy settings are "flexible, not fixed" and that across the global south, including in Southeast Asia, New Delhi is seen as an "authentically independent actor, not an ally parroting American talking points".&nbsp;

China recently adopted a tougher language against Taiwan, the self-ruled island nation that it considers as its own. While releasing its budget figures on March 5&nbsp;in the country's rubber-stamp parliament, the National People's Congress, Beijing replaced the mention of Taiwan's "peaceful reunification" into the mainland with a "reunification" that will "be firm".

"China would probably be more emboldened to press other territorial claims, including those that to date have been deprioritised — such as in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh," the paper notes.&nbsp;

China has also routinely asserted its claim on the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, an affirmation consistently denounced by New Delhi.&nbsp;

"Unless China becomes convinced that militarily advancing its territorial claims is unacceptable, we should expect it to act aggressively on India’s borders," Arzan Tarapore, author of the ASPI research paper, and PhD Research Scholar at the Center for International Security and Cooperation at the Stanford University told WION.&nbsp;

"If Beijing is allowed to get away with aggression against Taiwan, I cannot imagine that it will stop there," Tarapore added.&nbsp;

<h2>India's disregard for Beijing's 'One China' strategic catchphrase</h2>

New Delhi maintains that its official recognition of the government in Beijing does not require continued explanation. After a short duration of using the phrase 'One China',&nbsp;New Delhi discontinued its use in 2009.&nbsp;

The 'One China' principle has been deployed by Beijing to assert globally that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, a claim Taipei has denounced.

"India has artfully signaled that it is invested in the status quo and stability in cross-strait relations: it disregards China's usual demands to parrot the 'One China' shibboleth," the research paper noted.

"The diplomatic option for India is to make sure that Taiwan specifically, or Chinese aggressiveness more generally, is on the agenda in India’s diplomatic activity bilaterally and multilaterally with countries across the world, certainly in Asia, but also in more distant regions, like Europe and Africa," Tarapore told WION.&nbsp;

"Beijing should be clear that the world has a common position on the inadmissibility of the use of force against Taiwan. India has exceptional influence in shaping that global opinion, and it should use that influence, out of self-interest if it seeks to be the Vishwaguru."

In connection to the latest attack which was thwarted by the Russian authorities, the Federal Security Service (FSB) disclosed that they foiled "terrorist activities of three nationals from a Central Asian country," as per reports.&nbsp;

The security agency also revealed that the now-detained individuals were&nbsp;"planning to commit a terrorist act by blowing up a device in a public place in the Stavropol region."&nbsp;

Former United States president and current presidential hopeful Donald Trump is pushing legal challenges in two cases before the Easter weekend. A report by BBC early Saturday (Mar 30) said that Trump's lawyers are appealing against a verdict from a Georgia judge allowing&nbsp;Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to stay in the state's election subversion case.

The lawyers are also aiming to stop&nbsp;the expansion of a gag order, limiting Trump's speech, in the&nbsp;hush money trial.&nbsp;

In the election subversion case, Trump and his co-defendants alleged that Willis&nbsp;financially benefitted from an improper romantic relationship with Nathan Wade - a prosecutor she hired to lead the case. Judge Scott McAfee, who is overseeing the case, held two weeks of hearings which included a testimony from Willis who admitted being in a relationship with Wade but said she did not benefit from it financially.

Judge McAfee sided with Willis. He pointed out&nbsp;relationship had the "appearance of impropriety" and said that Willis or Wade should step down following which the latter did so.

In a motion filed&nbsp;before the Georgia Court of Appeals on Friday, Trump and&nbsp;co-defendants argued that Willis should be removed too. The lawyers of Trump and the co-defendants&nbsp;said that Wade stepping down did not&nbsp;sufficiently address the appearance of impropriety&nbsp;that cast a pall over the proceedings.

In the hush money trial,&nbsp;Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide a $130,000 payment to adult actor Stormy&nbsp;Daniels.

The BBC report said that earlier this week, Justice&nbsp;Juan Merchan, the judge in this case,&nbsp;granted a request from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office to impose a gag order on the former president barring him from making statements about jurors and witnesses or intimidating court staff.

On Friday,&nbsp;Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg sought to clarify - and possibly expand - the gag order barring Trump from attacking court staff and their families. The motion came after&nbsp;Trump insulted Merchan's daughter in a social media post before the gag order was issued.

Bragg asked Merchan to warn Trump and direct him to immediately desist. If Trump does not,&nbsp;the prosecutor argued, he should face sanctions, the report added.

However, Trump's lawyer&nbsp;Todd Blanche denied that the former president violated the gag order and argued that the judge's daughter was not a part of it. Blanche added that there was nothing wrong with the social media posts.

The above developments come as Trump faces four legal cases including the election subversion case and hush money trial- which are likely to be heard before the presidential elections in November. Trump has denied any wrongdoing in all cases.

When asked if there was any spillage, the representative&nbsp;Darrell Dillard from&nbsp;Synergy Marine Group told WION that even though there are reports of a minor sheen on the water, the "source of the sheen is not confirmed."&nbsp;

A total of 20 Indian crew members were aboard the ship which hit the bridge&nbsp;after the power failure and subsequent&nbsp;loss of control on March 26.

When WION inquired about them, a representative said that the crew members are "heavily" involved in the investigation process.

However, when further probed whether they are being questioned over the incident, the representative said, "I would not say that they are being investigated but I would put it like this&nbsp; - as you know, after the incident, the Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) would want to speak with them."

WION tried asking for&nbsp;the identities of the Indian crew member and from where they belong.

However, a Synergy spokesperson said that they are not "revealing the names and other information about the Indian nationals as we do not want to jeopardise the case."&nbsp;

When further asked about the age group the&nbsp;crew members belonged to, the representative reiterated that they would not want to disclose any information.&nbsp;

"Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)'s top priority is the safety of the crew members and their well being."

As per reports, an eight-year-old child is the sole survivor of the tragedy.&nbsp;

As per a statement by the nation's transport ministry, the bus driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle. It said this caused the bus to go over the bridge and hit the ground, catching fire.

"It is alleged that the driver lost control, colliding with barriers on the bridge causing the bus to go over the bridge and hitting the ground, where it caught fire," it said.

The tragic accident happened near Mmamatlakala in Limpopo province, about 190 miles (305&nbsp;km) north of Johannesburg, where the bus fell from a bridge linking two hillsides.

<h2>Lone Survivor</h2>

An eight-year-old child, the only passenger to survive the bus crash, was in a seriously injured condition. In a statement, Limpopo's Department of Transport revealed that the child whose identity is yet to be revealed was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The provincial department, as reported by Reuters, said that the bodies of some passengers were burnt beyond recognition in the accident, while others were trapped by the debris or scattered over the crash scene.

While the bus had Botswana number plates, the nationality of the passengers was still being checked.

<h2>Condolences&nbsp;</h2>

Sindisiwe Chikunga, the transport minister, visited the site of the crash. As per BBC, Chikunga said that the South African government would help repatriate the bodies and also conduct a full inquiry into the crash.

Extending her "heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragic bus crash," she said, "Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time."

"We continue to urge responsible driving at all times with heightened alertness as more people are on our roads this Easter weekend," she added.

As per a statement by the nation's transport ministry, the bus driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle. It said this caused the bus to go over the bridge and hit the ground, catching fire. The tragic accident happened near Mmamatlakala in Limpopo province, about 190 miles (305 km) north of Johannesburg, where the bus fell from a bridge linking two hillsides. Lone Survivor An eight-year-old child, the only passenger to survive the bus crash, was in a seriously injured condition. In a statement, Limpopo's Department of Transport revealed that the child whose identity is yet to be revealed was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. While the bus had Botswana number plates, the nationality of the passengers was still being checked. Condolences Sindisiwe Chikunga, the transport minister, visited the site of the crash. As per BBC, Chikunga said that the South African government would help repatriate the bodies and also conduct a full inquiry into the crash. Extending her "heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragic bus crash," she said, "Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time." "We continue to urge responsible driving at all times with heightened alertness as more people are on our roads this Easter weekend," she added.
