<h2>Republicans call veto "disgusting"</h2>

Despite Evers' steadfast opposition to the bill since it was introduced, the Republican-controlled Legislature in Wisconsin had managed to pass it as Democrats lacked the votes to stop its passage.&nbsp;

Nonetheless, the governor's veto has become a formidable obstacle, and Republicans lack the necessary votes to override it.

Condemning Evers'&nbsp;decision, Republican Representative Barb Dittrich, who sponsored the bill, called the veto "disgusting" and accused him of holding a "misogynistic and hateful position towards actual females."&nbsp;

He argued that the veto disregarded the achievements.

Notably, the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association already requires transgender athletes to undergo hormone therapy before participating in sports, aligning with NCAA guidelines.

Across the United States, at least 20 states have approved their versions of a blanket ban on transgender athletes playing on K-12 and collegiate sports teams statewide. To counter such bans, the Biden administration is finalising a proposal that seeks to invalidate such bans, citing violations of Title IX, a landmark gender-equity legislation.

"Out of respect for my community, out of respect for all of the people who have suffered and who have been killed in the process, I needed to walk out of the meeting," said Ahmad.

Ahmad, who claimed that he was the only Palestinian-American present in the meeting, said "there wasn't a lot of response" from Biden. "He actually said he understood, and I walked away," said Ahmad, while speaking to CNN.

The event appears starkly different from the reception hosted by Biden last May to mark the end of Ramadan. Various attendees cheered Biden at the White House when he told them, "It's your house."

The earthquake has prompted tsunami warnings in the self-ruled island parts of Southern Japan and Philippines. Taiwan Earthquake: At least seven killed, over 700 injured in Taiwan post quake

A powerful earthquake of 7.5 magnitude hit Taiwan around 9:00 am Japanese local time (0000 GMT) on Wednesday (April 3) which led to tsunami warnings for southern Japanese islands, said Japan Meteorological Agency. Seven people were&nbsp;killed and more than 700 others were reported injured in the massive earthquake.

According to the agency, tsunami waves as high as three metres (10 feet) were expected in remote Japanese islands close to Taiwan, which includes Miyakojima Island. However, tsunami warnings have now been lifted.

The earthquake reportedly knocked out power in different parts of the city. The footage of some collapsed buildings near the quake's epicentre was telecast&nbsp;on Taiwan television stations.&nbsp;As per media reports, some people are also trapped in the debris. The quake was felt as far as Shanghai.

<h2>Japan issues evacuation advisory</h2>

An evacuation advisory was issued by the Japanese authorities for the coastal areas of the southern prefecture of Okinawa, in the wake of the tsunami alert.

Japan’s national broadcaster&nbsp;broadcasted&nbsp;warnings like&nbsp;“Tsunami is coming. Please evacuate immediately,” said an anchor on NHK. “Do not stop. Do not go back," they said.

“Evacuate!” read a banner on the broadcast channel.&nbsp;

Another warning was issued by the Philippines Seismology Agency for residents in coastal areas of different provinces, appealing to them to evacuate to higher ground.

The earthquake tremors were also felt in Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou and Ningde in China's Fujian province, as per the Chinese state media.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department released the video and audio clips, including the 15-minute video released on Friday in response to public records requests made by The Associated Press and other media outlets.&nbsp;

The video footage was not from the body-worn cameras but was recorded by a sheriff’s helicopter and witness dashboard cameras.

However, the deputy's shouts were not broadcast over the radio, said the sheriff's department, but the audio was captured by his belt recorder. A deputy in the helicopter can be heard saying ‘Oh, no’ over the radio after the teen was shot.

The autopsy reports of the teenager and her father who was killed a day before the gun battle have not been released.

The department reported four sheriff's department vehicles were struck by gunfire during the hunt, and deputies seized multiple firearms and hundreds of rounds from the pickup truck, as well as flash bangs, smoke grenades, body armour and tactical helmets.

Savannah Graziano was not armed when she was shot.

Video shows California officers fatally shooting abducted teenager as she surrenders

British author JK Rowling's social media comments in which she challenged the new hate crime law of Scotland are not being seen as a criminal act, said Police Scotland.

The celebrated author, who is famous for her Harry Potter series, described various transgender women as men, which included trans activists, convicted prisoners and other public figures.

As per the new law, "stirring up hatred" in relation to protected characteristics is seen as a new crime. The police confirmed that they have received complaints but no action will be taken against Rowling.

Reacting to the row, Rowling wrote on X, "I hope every woman in Scotland who wishes to speak up for the reality and importance of biological sex will be reassured by this announcement, and I trust that all women - irrespective of profile or financial means - will be treated equally under the law."

"If they go after any woman for simply calling a man a man, I'll repeat that woman's words and they can charge us both at once," she added.

According to the Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act 2021, it is a criminal offence to make derogatory comments on the basis of disability, religion, sexual orientation, transgender identity or being intersex.

Under the Public Order Act 1986 in Great Britain, spreading hatred on the basis of race, colour, nationality or ethnicity is illegal and is now also a part of the new law.

More than 3,000 complaints have reached Police Scotland since the law came into effect on Monday.

The United States, Israel's closest ally, said that there was no evidence Israel deliberately targeted the aid workers but that it was outraged by their deaths and Israel had an obligation to ensure aid workers in Gaza were not harmed.

The White House said it expected a broad and impartial investigation to be carried out with appropriate accountability.

"These people are heroes, they run into the fire, not away from it," US&nbsp;Secretary of State Antony Blinken said of the seven aid workers, speaking to reporters in Paris. "We shouldn't have a situation where people who are simply trying to help their fellow human beings are themselves at grave risk."

Israel has long denied accusations that it is hindering the distribution of urgently needed food aid in Gaza, which it has besieged in a war since October, saying the problem is caused by international aid groups' inability to get it to those in need.

Despite coordinating movements with the Israeli military, the convoy was hit as it was leaving its Deir al-Balah warehouse after unloading more than 100 tons of humanitarian food aid brought to Gaza by sea, WCK said.

"This is not only an attack against WCK, this is an attack on humanitarian organisations showing up in the most dire of situations where food is being used as a weapon of war," said Erin Gore, chief executive of World Central Kitchen.

"This is unforgivable."

In Cyprus, officials said seaborne aid for Gaza civilians was returning to the eastern Mediterranean island following the killing of the WCK workers, after the US-based charity said it would pause work in the enclave.

The United Arab Emirates, which had been the main financier for WCK's aid efforts through the maritime corridor, said it was pausing such shipments from Cyprus pending further safety guarantees from Israel and a full investigation.

<h2>INCREASING ISRAELI ISOLATION</h2>

Australia, Britain and Poland, countries which have generally been friendly towards Israel, all demanded action to protect aid workers, underlining Netanyahu's increasing diplomatic isolation over the situation in Gaza.

At least 196 humanitarian workers have been killed in Gaza since a Hamas attack on Israel on October&nbsp;7 triggered Israel's assault on the Hamas-ruled enclave, and the deaths of the WCK staffers were "the inevitable result of the way this war is currently being conducted", UN&nbsp;spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday.

Asked by reporters what the UN&nbsp;would say to the Israeli government over the airstrike, he said, "The message is: Let humanitarian workers do their job."

Israel has been under rising international pressure to alleviate severe hunger in Gaza, which has been shattered by Israel's offensive against the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas. Much of the densely populated territory has been laid waste and most of its 2.3 million population displaced.

The United Nations and other international groups have accused Israel of hindering aid distribution with bureaucratic obstacles and failing to ensure the security of food convoys, underlined by a disaster on February&nbsp;29, in which around 100 people were killed as they awaited an aid delivery.

Hamas, Gaza's dominant group, has said the main problem with aid distribution is Israeli targeting of aid workers. After the latest incident, it issued a statement saying the attack aimed to terrorise workers of international humanitarian agencies, deterring them from their missions.

Andres, who started WCK in 2010 by sending cooks and food to Haiti after an earthquake, said he was heartbroken and grieving for the families and friends of those who died in the airstrike.

"The Israeli government needs to stop this indiscriminate killing. It needs to stop restricting humanitarian aid, stop killing civilians and aid workers, and stop using food as a weapon," he said.

Video obtained by Reuters showed a large hole in the roof of a four-wheel-drive WCK vehicle and its burned and torn interior, as well as paramedics moving bodies into a hospital and displaying the passports of three of those killed.

The six journalists, including Favorskaya, were arrested on Wednesday (Mar 27)&nbsp;and Thursday (Mar 28), according to RSF.&nbsp;

Favorskaya was reportedly arrested while being released after spending 10 days in detention in Moscow on a charge of "disobeying the police," RSF reported. Two other journalists, Alexandra Astakhova and Anastasia Musayeva, who came to meet Favorskaya, were also detained and are now "involved in the case as witnesses," according to SOTA Vision. All three journalists were also reportedly subjected to searches during their detention.

In South Carolina, on Monday (Apr 1) convicted killer Alex Murdaugh faced another reckoning, this time for financial fraud and&nbsp;got handed a 40-year sentence and&nbsp;nearly $9 million in restitution for his crimes.

The four-decade sentence is for embezzlement and theft from clients and his personal injury law firm and&nbsp;is besides the 27-year sentence he received in a state court for similar financial offences.&nbsp;

The 55-year-old former attorney was sentenced in a federal court in South Carolina after pleading guilty to 22 counts of financial crimes.

While Federal agents had recommended a sentence of 17 1/2 to just under 22 years for his crimes, presiding US District Judge Richard Gergel imposed a harsher punishment.

Gergel said that he stole from "the most needy, vulnerable people," including a quadriplegic client, an injured state trooper, and a trust fund for children whose parents were killed in a wreck.

Murdaugh stole from people who "placed all their problems and all their hopes" on him, said the judge.

Attorney Justin Bamberg, who represented several of Murdaugh's victims,&nbsp;said, "There is a staggering human toll to every cent."

<h2>What did he do with the money?</h2>

Murtagh took settlement money and inflated fees or expenses for more than two dozen of his clients, reports news agency AP.

To do this, he used a "maze" of fake accounts, and juggled checks and money movements that hid the thefts for nearly 20 years. &nbsp;

Blaming nearly two decades of addiction to opioids for the financial fraud, he said he felt "guilt, sorrow, shame, embarrassment, humiliation."

"There's not enough time and I don't possess a sufficient vocabulary to adequately portray to you in words the magnitude of how I feel about the things I did," said Murdaugh.

However, Gergel dismissed Murtagh's explanation and said: "No truly impaired person could pull off these complex transactions."

Prosecutors also argued that Murdaugh's claims about his drug addiction didn't add up. They pointed out that the amount of money he stole increased rapidly in the years before his arrest, despite him claiming to be taking the same amount of pills as when his addiction started.

Murdaugh is a disbarred attorney who is already serving a life sentence without parole for killing his wife and son.

Just three years ago, he was an established attorney negotiating high-stakes multimillion-dollar settlements in Hampton County.
