Two passenger jets collided on the ground at Heathrow Airport on Saturday (Apr 6) due to which damage occurred to the wings of both aircraft.&nbsp;

In the aftermath of the collision, which raised concerns among passengers aboard one of the aircraft, images of the incident were widely shared on social media platforms. The incident involved the Virgin Atlantic plane and a British Airways aircraft.

The Virgin Atlantic plane was being towed away when it hit the stationary British Airways aircraft post which both planes sustained damage. However, emergency services swiftly took care of the situation by responding.

Virgin Atlantic promptly initiated an investigation. The collision reportedly took place between Boeing 787 and the BA Airbus A350 at Terminal 3 around noon.

The airline confirmed that the Virgin aircraft, which had completed a flight, was being towed to another part of the airport. Notably, there were no passengers on board the Virgin aircraft at the time of the incident.&nbsp;

But British Airways had 121 passengers aboard and was due to take off for&nbsp;Accra in Ghana. Whereas, Virgin Atlantic had already completed the flight. Later, another plane from the British Airways fleet was substituted for the flight to Accra by transferring the passengers to that one.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and evaluated the damage to strategise on how best to separate the planes without causing any further harm.

A Heathrow spokesperson confirmed that no passenger injuries were reported as of yet. This alleviated immediate concerns about the passengers.

A Virgin Atlantic spokesman said: “We are aware that the wing tip of one of our empty aircraft came into contact with another aircraft whilst being towed from the stand at London Heathrow Terminal 3."

<h2>Effort towards opening the main channel</h2>

Unified Command, a coalition of federal and state agencies overseeing the response to the bridge collapse, in a statement said that the Captain of the Port (COTP) was "preparing to establish a temporary alternate channel on the northeast side of the main channel in the vicinity of the Francis Scott Key Bridge for commercially essential vessels."

"This will mark an important first step along the road to reopening the port of Baltimore," said Captain David O'Connell, Federal On-Scene Coordinator, Key Bridge Response 2024.&nbsp;

Vessels and people are required to obtain permission from the COTP or a designated representative to enter the safety zone.

As per media reports, a "remarkably complex operation" to clear the debris has begun at the incident site.

The Port of Baltimore is a vital hub for trade to the US economy. In 2023, $80.8 billion worth of foreign cargo moved through it.

"By being able to stop cars from coming over the bridge, these people are heroes. They saved lives last night," said Maryland Governor Wes Moore at a news briefing.

The regional government told the Russian news agency TASS that residents of the city of Orsk, which is 276 kilometres east of Orenburg, are being evacuated as more than 4,200 homes and almost 11,000 people may be affected by rising flood water.&nbsp;

Residents of the Leninsky and Sovetsky districts of Orsk are being evacuated, said the regional prosecutor’s office.&nbsp;

Around 440 relief workers and 217 pieces of equipment were deployed to deal with the aftermath of the dam burst in Orsk, reported TASS citing the Russian emergencies ministry.&nbsp;

The mountain city of Orsk is home to 230,000 people. According to the state news agency, the evacuation in the old part of the city was underway after a protective dam collapsed near Orenburgskaya Street.&nbsp;

So far, 135 people, including 55 children, have been evacuated to temporary shelters set up, the Russian emergencies ministry told TASS.&nbsp;

Charity questions credibility of Israeli inquiry findings on killing of aid workers

A shooting incident at a bustling shopping mall in Florida has resulted in the deaths of two people&nbsp;and injuries to seven others.

According to Miami-Dade police, a confrontation erupted at the Martini Bar within the CityPlace Doral premises early Saturday morning (April 6). The altercation led to the fatal shooting of a security guard, who intervened in the altercation, by the gunman. Subsequently, the assailant was also killed in an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement, as reported by Alvaro Zabaleta, a Miami-Dade detective, cited by the Guardian.

Six bystanders, comprising five men and one woman, sustained injuries during the shootout, along with a police officer who was shot in the leg, as stated by Zabaleta.

“Officers that were working at the commercial establishment at the time immediately responded, and there was an exchange of gunfire,” Zabaleta said during a news conference.

“Unfortunately, the security guard lost his life while he was performing his duties, and of course, our heart goes out to that family,” he added.

The wounded police officer, who applied his own tourniquet according to CBS News, has been discharged from the hospital. Local residents expressed shock at the violent incident.

The identity of the shooter is being investigated by authorities.

There have been at least 12 aftershocks that registered 1.8 or more on the Richter scale, according to the United States Geological Survey.

New York was hit by a 4.7 magnitude earthquake on Friday.&nbsp;During the jolts, the New York buildings rattled with the tremors while an alert was also sent to the residents advising them to remain indoors and call 911 in case of any injuries. The people were quite shocked by the earthquake as NYC is not in a quake-prone region.&nbsp;

According to USGS, the epicentre of the earthquake was near Whitehouse Station in New Jersey. The depth of the epicentre was 5 kilometres, as per the survey. Even as there have been reports of buildings shaking due to quake from Philadelphia north to Boston, there have been no official statements of any kind of injury.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While the recording on the&nbsp;Richter scale, as per the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre, was of 5.5 magnitude. Reuters citing its reporters on the ground as well as other social media reports, said that the quake was felt across New York City, New Jersey, western Connecticut, and northern Pennsylvania.

A Bronx resident aged 38, Charita Walcott, described the earthquake as a "violent rumble" lasting nearly 30 seconds.

"It was kind of like being in a drum circle, that vibration," she said, as reported by news agency Reuters.
