The people evacuated from the area have been sent to temporary housing centres, said Kurenkov.

As per news agency AFP reports, the images spread out on social media platform Telegram's channel showed the minister on a small boat surrounded by members of the emergency services.

The dam in the Orenburg region burst on Friday night (Apr 5) due to torrential rains.

"The situation remains critical. The water is arriving and in the coming days, its level will only rise," Salmin wrote on Telegram, adding that the water level had risen 28 centimetres since the previous day.

The Russian weather authorities believe that on Wednesday it will reach its peak level.

Xcel Energy, a prominent power company in Colorado is initiating a power shut-off to mitigate wildfire risks amidst powerful winds, reaching up to 100 miles per hour. The power outage can affect over 55,000 people.

The outage will start from 3:00 pm local time, primarily in Boulder County and small sections of Broomfield, Douglas, Gilpin, Jefferson, and Larimer counties. According to Xcel Energy, the power cut-off is expected to last until at least Sunday (April 7) at noon. The company said in a statement they 'made the decision to proactively de-energize lines'.

“Outages are likely to persist beyond that time frame because crews must physically inspect the power lines. Temporarily shutting power off is intended to prevent our electric system from becoming the source of a wildfire ignition,” Xcel Energy said.

Ukrainian troops have accused Russia of systematically using internationally outlawed chemical gas attacks on the battlefield. In statements given to the Daily Telegraph, they said Russia regularly uses small drones to drop teargas and other chemicals. The use of such substance, known as CS, is banned under international treaties, primarily the Chemical Weapons Convention.

According to a top Ukrainian commander, the frequent CS attacks have forced the Ukrainian troops to carry gas masks to the frontlines.

A commander of the Ukrainian army on the frontlines in Donetsk Oblast claimed, "Nearly every position in our area of the front was getting one or two gas grenades dropped on them a day."

"The only way for them to successfully attack us [is] with gas," he added.

The commander added that the tactic has induced fear and panic among troops on the frontlines. As and when gas is detected, "the first instinct is to get out", he is quoted as saying.

As troops get out of their trenches and start running away, Russian troops easily take them down from far away. Ukraine claims Russia has carried out 625 gas-related attacks on their troops since the war broke out in 2022.

While most of the troops on the frontlines now carry gas masks, their effectiveness is highly limited as they are ex-Soviet models and not fit for modern-day war.

As a result, President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on the West for urgent support and weapons needed for a counteroffensive.

One of the chemical weapons allegedly used by Russia was identified as a K-51 gas grenade by chemical weapons expert Marc-Michael Blum. These grenades are typically filled with tear gas.

It is to be noted that even Russia had accused Ukraine of using chemical weapons back in 2023.

Russia accused Ukrainian forces of using unspecified chemical weapons in drones in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine.

Both sides deny claims.

Thunberg was first taken into custody and held for a brief period of time by the local police along with other demonstrators who tried to obstruct a key highway leading to The Hague.

Following her initial release, the famous climate activist instantly rejoined a small group of protesters who were obstructing a different route that led to the railway station. &nbsp;

Thunberg, before her arrest told media that the reason why she was protesting was that currently, the world is experiencing an existential crisis.

"The world is facing an existential crisis ... creating climate refugees".

The march was organised by the Extinction Rebellion environmental group (XR), who have in the past flooded the highway and obstructed traffic for hours until they were taken away by police after being sprayed by a water canon.

Carrying XR flags and placards saying "Stop fuel subsidies now!" and "The planet is dying!", activists were locked in a tense standoff with police who formed a wall of law enforcement.

They tried to block the A12 highway, which in recent months has been blocked multiple times by the demonstrators who demanded an end to fossil fuel subsidies.

Previously during protests, the police detained activists in another part of town, who were released without further consequences.

XR environmental group released a statement saying, "Meanwhile the ecological crisis continues to rage and the country's outgoing cabinet pretends that we have all the time in the world, while the crisis is now."
