<h2>What happened at the event?</h2>

The gathering of the hard-right nationalist European politicians called the National Conservatism (NatCon) Conference descended into chaos after the Brussels police tried to shut it down over safety concerns.&nbsp;

The controversial event was also to hear from UK politician Nigel Farage, French right-wing candidate Eric Zemmour and former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki over the next two days, but as per Politico was shut down by the police just two hours after it began at the Claridge venue.&nbsp;

The police arrived at the venue when Farage was addressing the crowd, and as the drama unfolded outside, he continued his speech saying that the decision to cancel the conference was “absolutely outrageous”.&nbsp;

One of the police officers who arrived at the venue of the event that was being held in the capital’s Saint-Josse Ten Noode region told the organisers that the mayor had decided to shut it down and that he had a three-page document outlining the grounds for the closure.&nbsp;

“The authorities decided to shut the event due to possibility of public disorder,” a police officer heard by Politico told one of the organisers.&nbsp;

The law enforcement personnel were ordered by Emir Kir, the mayor of the Saint-Josse Ten Noode, who later took to X and confirmed media reports that he ordered a halt to the event to “guarantee public safety.” He added, “The far right is not welcome.”&nbsp;

According to media reports, NatCon had a hard time securing a venue and had been rejected by two other Brussels venues before they managed to secure Claridge venue. The organisers reportedly said that some 600 attendees were expected to attend the conference.&nbsp;

The move to halt the event garnered criticism from Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo who took to X and called it “unacceptable”.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s spokesperson called reports of police action at NatCon “extremely disturbing,” adding that he is a “strong supporter and advocator for free speech”.&nbsp;

Sunak was “very clear that cancelling events or preventing attendance and no-platforming speakers is damaging to free speech and to democracy as a result,” said his spokesperson.&nbsp;

Trump’s hush money trial: Violation of gag order can lead to fines, jail time, say New York prosecutors

A couple got divorced by accident because of a computer mistake made by solicitors at a top UK law firm. The high court, referring to the couple as Mr and Mrs&nbsp;Williams, couldn't reverse the decision. They were married for 21 years and separated in 2023.

Solicitors at London's Vardags firm, led by Ayesha Vardag, mistakenly applied for a final order using an online portal, even though the couple was still negotiating financial arrangements for their split, as reported by the Guardian.

Sir Andrew McFarlane, the president of the family division, explained that the lawyers meant to apply for a divorce for another client but ended up opening the file for 'Williams v Williams' and applied for a final order by mistake.

He mentioned that solicitors at Vardags, representing the wife, accessed the online portal without their client's instruction or authority. The online system processed the request quickly and granted the divorce order for the Williamses within 21 minutes, as was usual.

<h2>Computer error turns serious</h2>

The solicitors realised their error two days later and sought to cancel the final divorce order from the high court. They explained that the mistake was simply a matter of someone at Vardags "clicking the wrong button" and argued that since the final order was mistakenly applied for, it should be reversed.

However, McFarlane dismissed the request, stating, "There is a strong public policy interest in upholding the certainty and finality that comes from a final divorce order and maintaining the established status quo."

He elaborated that, similar to other online processes, the operator may only reach the final screen, where the final click of the mouse is made, after navigating through several previous screens.

Vardag, a prominent divorce lawyer in the UK, criticised the judge's decision, stating that he effectively decided, "'the computer says no, you're divorced'." She asserted that the state should not grant divorces based on clerical errors and stressed on&nbsp;the importance of intention in our legal system's justice, citing her landmark ruling in 2010 regarding the legal binding of German heiress Katrin Radmacher's prenuptial agreement.

Vardag informed the Law Society Gazette that she was supporting the solicitor who mistakenly applied for the final order for the Williamses. This error occurred when the solicitor accidentally selected the wrong name from a drop-down menu on the divorce portal.

In 2017, Vardag secured a $79 million&nbsp;settlement for Pauline Chai, the wife of Laura Ashley tycoon Khoo Kay Peng.

The British parliament is set to finally approve a divisive law this week to pave the way for asylum seekers to be deported to Rwanda, but further legal hurdles could yet hold up or derail one of Prime Minister Rishi&nbsp;Sunak's key policies.

Sunak&nbsp;has invested huge political capital in the Rwanda scheme whose success or failure might be crucial to his Conservative party's fortunes in an upcoming election, given his promise it will stop thousands of people arriving without permission in small boats across the Channel.

The new legislation is poised to get lawmakers' approval, unamended, by the end of the week. But whether the Rwanda scheme does finally get off the ground by the middle of the year as&nbsp;Sunak&nbsp;has promised remains far from certain.

"In our view, the legislation is utterly performative," said Paul O’Connell from the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union which has previously brought lawsuits over the policy and is preparing further action.

The first planned deportation flight in June 2022 was blocked by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), before the UK Supreme Court last year declared the scheme unlawful.

Sunak's new law, which disapplies some existing human rights statutes, is designed to override the Supreme Court's ruling by stating Rwanda must be treated by British judges as a safe destination, as well as also limiting individuals' options for an appeal to only exceptional cases.

Even if the legal problems do not block the flights, there are also suggestions the government might struggle to find airlines willing to provide planes, with the charity Freedom from Torture running a campaign to persuade carriers not to participate.

San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge was shut down for hours, on Monday morning during rush hour, after pro-Palestinian activists protested the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;

The traffic was halted in both directions of the six-lane suspension bridge and came to a standstill after protesters chained themselves to parked vehicles. According to the California Highway Patrol, more than 30 people were arrested.&nbsp;

It said people will criminal record and an unlimited fine if they are guilty of creating "horrific images" without consent.&nbsp;

If the image is then shared more widely offenders could be sent to jail. Meanwhile, is someone creates a sexually explicit deepfake without any intention of sharing it, but purely wants to cause alarm, humiliation or distress to the victim, they will be committing a criminal offence.&nbsp;

The government said that if a person both creates deepfakes and then shares it, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) could charge them with two offences, potentially leading to their sentence being increased.&nbsp;

In an official statement, Laura Farris, the Minister for Victims and Safeguarding, said: "The creation of deepfake sexual images is despicable and completely unacceptable irrespective of whether the image is shared."&nbsp;

"It is another example of ways in which certain people seek to degrade and dehumanise others - especially women. And it has the capacity to cause catastrophic consequences if the material is shared more widely. This government will not tolerate it," Farris added.&nbsp;

"This new offence sends a crystal clear message that making this material is immoral, often misogynistic and a crime," she said.&nbsp;

The Indian Navy said Tuesday (Apr 16) it intercepted a suspicious vessel in the Western Arabian Sea on April 13 and seized 940 kg of contraband narcotics from it. The navy’s elite Marine Commandoes (MARCOS) aboard warship INS Talwar conducted the operation ‘'Crimson Barracuda' and carried out the seizure, a spokesperson of the Indian Navy said.

According to media reports, it is for the first time that the Indian Navy, a member of the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), has conducted a "drug interdiction".

The CMF in a statement said, “INS Talwar, operating in support of the Canadian-led Combined Task Force (CTF) 150, conducted its first interdiction of illicit narcotics as a member of CMF, seizing 940 kg of drugs in the Arabian Sea.”

<h2>About Combined Maritime Forces</h2>

The CMF is a 42-nation naval group, which aims to uphold international rule-based order in the international waters. The group’s primary responsibility is to secure and stabilise 3.2 million square miles of water encompassing some of the world's most important shipping lanes.

Speaking of the Western Arabian Sea, it’s an important shipping route for oil tankers coming from Gulf nations.

The spokesperson of the Indian Navy said the drugs are being disposed off as per regulations.

Eight construction workers were on the bridge when the disaster struck. A collision with the massive container ship Dali sent them plunging into the Patapsco River below.

Two workers were fortunate to be rescued the same day, and a search continued for the missing. Two bodies were recovered within two days of the incident, followed by the discovery of Maynor Yasir Suazo Sandoval earlier this month.

The fourth victim was identified on Monday by the chief medical examiner's office, a day after the body was recovered.

However, in accordance with the family's wishes, the victim's name will not be released.
