As the race to the White House continues to heat up, presumptive presidential candidates Donald Trump and Joe Biden both hold a mostly negative view among voters, shows a new poll.&nbsp;

The poll conducted by SSRS for CNN found that while 58 per cent of voters have an unfavourable view of Biden, 55 per cent felt negatively about Trump. However, 53 per cent also said they were dissatisfied with the candidates they had to choose from in this year's presidential contest.

However, despite the largely negative view, Trump, as per the poll, continues to hold the edge over US President Biden.

As per the CNN poll, 49 per cent of the 1,212 adults, including 967 registered voters, surveyed voiced their support for Donald Trump. On the other hand, Biden saw the support of around 43 per cent of voters.

<h2>First time as president: Success or failure?</h2>

The presumptive candidates for the Republican and the Democratic Party are both vying for their second term in the White House.&nbsp;

Public opinion of their first terms found that 55 per cent feel that Trump's first stint as President was a success, while 44 per cent feel it was a failure.&nbsp;When asked what they thought about Biden's presidency so far, only 39 per cent said it was a success and a whopping 61 per cent said it was a failure. This in large part was due to the disapproval of his handling of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza — 71 per cent to just 28 per cent approval.

There was also some overlap in opinions; 14 per cent of Americans said both were a failure, and just eight per cent called both a success.

The poll found that a majority of the voters — 65 per cent of registered voters, said that economic concerns mattered when choosing a candidate.

Similarly, around 4 in 10 voters deem health care, abortion, and nominations to the US Supreme Court important, with each issue garnering a 43 per cent, 42 per cent, and 39 per cent share of voters, respectively.&nbsp;

On the other hand, foreign policy seems to be less of a concern to voters, with only 33 per cent considering it important. Climate change, the war between Israel and Hamas, and student loans follow suit, with 27 per cent, 26 per cent, and 24 per cent of voters respectively considering them as significant issues.

Jihadists in Nigeria are increasingly resorting to planting mines on highways to target military and civilian convoys after they were pushed back from territory they once controlled during the early years of the country's more than 15-year Islamist insurgency.

The militia fighters were escorting a civilian convoy from the town of Gamboru in Borno State to the regional capital Maiduguri when around 1230GMT their vehicle drove over a landmine suspected to have been planted by jihadists at Damno village, the two sources said.

"The rear tyres of the vehicle carrying 13 of our comrades hit a wide pothole in which a landmine was buried and it exploded," Shehu Mada, an anti-jihadist militia leader in Gamboru said. "Eleven people in the vehicle were killed while two escaped with injures."&nbsp;

The victims were removed from the remains of the vehicle and returned to Gamboru for burial, said Usman Hamza, another militia who gave the same toll.&nbsp;

Nigeria's militant conflict has gradually eased in intensity as the military carries out offensives against the militants.&nbsp;

The Gamboru to Maiduguri highway is a strategic 140-kilometre (87-mile) trade route in the region, and provides an important link with neighbouring Cameroon.&nbsp;

The highway was reopened in July 2016 after it was shut by the military for two years due to incessant jihadist attacks.&nbsp;

Boko Haram and rival Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) still launch sporadic ambushes on convoys from their hideouts and plant landmines along the highway.&nbsp;

In January, 17 people were killed along the highway in two separate mine blasts that were blamed on jihadists. Ten more people were killed by a landmine in April.

Three women from the Indian state of Gujarat tragically got killed in a devastating car accident in the United States. The accident occurred in Greenville County, South Carolina, as their SUV veered off Interstate 85 at Staunton Bridge Road, crashing into trees. The three women were identified as Rekhaben Patel, Manishaben Patel, and&nbsp;Sangitaben Patel, who were living in Georgia. They were originally from Borsad tehsil in Gujarat's Anand district.&nbsp;

Ellis described the scene as rare stating, "Very seldom do you see a vehicle that leaves the roadway at such a high rate of speed that it jumps 4-6 lanes of traffic and lands in the trees approximately 20 feet."

A senior Hamas official on Sunday (Apr 28) said that the Palestinian militant group would announce its response to the latest Gaza ceasefire counterproposal by Israel in Egypt on Monday (Apr 29).

"A Hamas delegation headed by Khalil al-Hayya will arrive in Egypt tomorrow... and deliver the movement's response" to the Israeli proposal during a meeting with Egyptian intelligence officials, said the official who declined to be named.

Earlier this week, Egypt had sent its own delegation to restart the stalled negotiations even as the offensive in Gaza intensifies.

Egypt, Qatar and the United States have been making repeated efforts to broker a new Gaza ceasefire deal after 80 Israeli hostages were released in exchange for 240 Palestinians in the month of November following a ceasefire deal.

Diplomatic efforts have been raked up in the past few days to broker a ceasefire and hostage-release deal.

Israel in its latest proposal has expressed a willingness to discuss the "restoration of sustainable calm" in Gaza after hostages are freed, news agency AFP said citing Axios report.

The report said that this was the very first time when Israel openly expressed having a discussion to put an end to the war.

"Hamas is open to discussing the new proposal positively," AFP quoted another Hamas source close to the negotiations as saying.

The source added that the group is "keen to reach an agreement that guarantees a permanent ceasefire, the free return of displaced people, an acceptable deal for (prisoner) exchange and ensuring an end to the (Gaza) siege".

The delegation, according to the source, would also discuss an Egyptian proposal concerning a ceasefire and a prisoner swap as a part of the overall deal to halt the fighting in Gaza.

He said the Egyptian proposal showed "some progress".&nbsp;

This, he said, guarantees that there would be no Israeli troops around on Al-Rashid road when displaced Palestinians make their way from the south of the territory back to the north.

It also proposes that Israeli forces remain 500 metres (yards) away from the main Salaheddin highway and also makes sure that the civilians are not shot at, arrested or detained when they return to their homes.

Al-Qahera News, which is linked to Egyptian intelligence services, reported "noticeable progress in bringing the views of the Egyptian and Israeli delegations closer".&nbsp;
