<h2>What were the teenagers planning?</h2>

Five teenagers, aged between 14 and 17, were charged with a range of offences including conspiring to engage in or planning a terrorist act, on Thursday (Apr 25) in a Sydney court, reported the Associated Press.

According to the documents, four boys, a 15-year-old, a 16-year-old and two 17-year-olds allegedly used Signal, an encrypted messaging app to plan their attack. The police also alleged that they all “adhered to a religiously motivated, violent extremist ideology”.&nbsp;

“I wanna die and I wanna kill...I’m just excited...Is your plan to get caught or die or escape?” a 17-year-old allegedly said in a group chat on 20 April, as quoted by the AP.&nbsp;

“We’re gonna be planning for a while...we prefer to escape, but whatever happens, it’s the qadr (predetermination) of Allah,” a 16-year-old allegedly responded.&nbsp;

In a separate conversation, on April 19, a 15-year-old allegedly said, “I really want to target the yahood,” meaning Jewish people.&nbsp;

The 16-year-old allegedly said “I know the bloke who done it,” referring to the teenager who allegedly stabbed the bishop, adding “he’s my mate.”

<h2>Plot to buy guns</h2>

The Australian media, citing a police fact sheet, said two of the defendants discussed buying guns on April 19, the day that the 16-year-old who allegedly stabbed the bishop was charged.&nbsp;

Notably, Australia has strict laws against gun ownership, but Sydney reportedly has a black market for firearms.&nbsp;

The teens were among those arrested by the Australian police in raids across Sydney, last week, for allegedly following a violent extremist ideology.&nbsp;

New South Wales Police Deputy Commissioner David Hudson, on Wednesday (Apr 24) said that the raids which involved over 400 police officers who executed 13 search warrants took place as the suspects were considered an immediate threat.&nbsp;

<h2>Emmanuel's&nbsp;first sermon after stabbing</h2>

The Assyrian bishop returned to the church on Sunday (Apr 28) and spoke about losing sight in his right eye after the attack.

The 53-year-old bishop was seen in the church wearing an eyepatch and delivering sermons marking the Assyrian Orthodox Palm Sunday.

“This young man who did this act almost two weeks ago, I say to you, my dear, you are my son and you will always be my son,” said Emmanuel in comments posted on social media.

He added, “I will always pray for you. I will always wish you nothing but the best.”

“Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO,” said the agency in a statement.&nbsp;

In an update, the UKMTO said that it was informed by a Company Security Officer that an explosion had occurred in close proximity to a merchant vessel in the area.&nbsp;

The vessel and the crew are reported safe and the authorities are still investigating the incident, said the British agency.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Ambrey said that the vessel was targeted due to its listed operator’s ongoing trade with Israel.&nbsp;

Both Ambrey and UKMTO reported that the incident took place around 54 nautical miles northwest of Yemen’s Mokha.

<h2>Houthi militants involved?</h2>

The Yemen-based Iran-backed Houthi rebels have repeatedly attacked international commercial shipping in the Red Sea region with drones and missiles, saying that they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza amid the ongoing war between Israel and the militant group Hamas.&nbsp;

The Houthi rebels, who have been targeting Red Sea shipping since mid-November have not claimed responsibility for the reported attack, on Monday.&nbsp;

The disaster raises the total death toll over the March-May wet season in&nbsp;Kenya&nbsp;to more than 120 as heavier than usual rainfall pounds East Africa, compounded by the El Nino weather pattern.

Residents said the accident occurred in the dead of night near Mai Mahiu, in Nakuru county, sending water gushing down a hill and engulfing everything in its path.

The deluge cut off a road, uprooted trees, washed away homes and sent vehicles flying.

"Forty-five bodies have been recovered from that dam tragedy as at now, and the team on the ground is overwhelmed but the search is still ongoing," a senior officer at Nakuru County police headquarters told AFP by phone.

Nakuru governor Susan Kihika had earlier put the death toll at 42.

"It's a conservative estimate. There are still more in the mud, we are working on recovery," she told AFP.

Rescuers were digging through the debris, using hoes and in some cases just their bare hands in a desperate search for survivors.

Stephen Njihia Njoroge, a local resident involved in the emergency efforts, said 12 people had been pulled to safety since 4:00 am (0100 GMT).&nbsp;

But for many, it was too late.

"We collected some of the bodies held by trees and we don't know how many are under the mud," he told AFP.

<h2>'Risky behaviour'&nbsp;</h2>

Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki said the government had directed security and intelligence officials to "inspect all public and private dams and water reservoirs in their jurisdictions within 24 hours... (and) recommend cases (for) compulsory evacuation and temporary resettlement".

He also said on X that the authorities would arrest people engaging in "risky behaviour", including motorists attempting dangerous crossings and anyone seeking to transport "passengers across flooded rivers or storm water by unsafe canoes or boats".

His comments came after a boat packed with people capsized at the weekend in flooded Tana River county in eastern&nbsp;Kenya, with the&nbsp;Kenya&nbsp;Red Cross saying it had retrieved two bodies and rescued 23 others.

Video footage shared online and &nbsp;on television showed the crowded boat sinking, with people screaming as onlookers watched in horror.

On Saturday, officials said 76 people had lost their lives in&nbsp;Kenya&nbsp;since March, with over 130,000 displaced.

Schools have been forced to remain shut following mid-term holidays, after the education ministry announced Monday it would postpone their reopening to May 6 due to "ongoing heavy rains".

"The devastating effects of the rains in some of the schools is so severe that it will be imprudent to risk the lives of learners and staff before water-tight measures are put in place to ensure adequate safety," Education Minister Ezekiel Machogu said.

<h2>Turmoil across the region&nbsp;</h2>

The monsoons have also wreaked havoc in neighbouring Tanzania, where at least 155 people have been killed in flooding and landslides.

In Burundi, one of the world's poorest countries, around 96,000 people have been displaced by months of relentless rains, the United Nations and the government said earlier this month.

Uganda has also suffered heavy storms that have caused riverbanks to burst, with two deaths confirmed and several hundred villagers displaced.
