The incident was later confirmed by the Israel Police who said a Border Police officer was allegedly stabbed and was later rushed to the hospital.&nbsp;

Israel’s emergency services, Magen David Adom (MDA) said that they received the report around 12:32 pm (local time) about a “stabbing terror attack” in Sultan Suleiman Street near Herod’s Gate in Jerusalem and were treating a 30-year-old male for “stab wounds.”

The assailant was neutralised by security forces, said the police in a statement.&nbsp;

The Turkish man, apparently a tourist, was identified as Hasan Skalanen and had entered Israel from Jordan, according to the Israeli media.&nbsp;

Opposition parties, who criticised the arrival of Chinese police in the archipelago in 2022, have formed a coalition, and will also seek to woo independents to reach the 26 seats needed to form a government.

The son of Seventh Day Adventist missionaries, Sogavare's thundering delivery in parliament&nbsp;was reminiscent of a preacher, and his rhetoric against Western-style democracy was often extreme, analysts said.

Lowy Institute research fellow Mihai Sora, a former Australian diplomat in the Solomon Islands, said Sogavare has been a polarising figure, and "a lightning rod for international scrutiny, which also put a great deal of pressure on the national government".

"MPs may have decided this time around that a less strident figure would have a better chance of being accepted by an already frustrated community, and may reduce some of the recent tensions with international partners," he said.

Manele has "a strong track record of working well with all international partners", he added.

The 2022 security pact with&nbsp;China, details of which have never been disclosed, raised concerns&nbsp;China&nbsp;would increase its navy presence and upset neighbours including Australia, the biggest aid donor and traditional security partner.

Sogavare denied there were plans to establish a Chinese military base, which the United States said would cross a red line, but Beijing used the Honiara foothold to lobby other Pacific Islands to accept a Chinese police presence.

Sogavare refused U.S. offers of millions of dollars in infrastructure funding, telling the United Nations General Assembly that&nbsp;China's aid was less restrictive.

He skipped a ceremony to mark the World War Two battle of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, attended by former U.S. President John F Kennedy's daughter, U.S. ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy. John F Kennedy was saved by Solomon Islanders while serving in the war.

In 2022, Sogavare's government blocked the U.S. Coast Guard and British navy from refuelling on a patrol for illegal fishing.

<h2>Keeping people safe</h2>

David Eby, the premier, announced that he's asking the federal government to make public drug use illegal again.

"Keeping people safe is our highest priority. While we are caring and compassionate for those struggling with addiction, we do not accept street disorder that makes communities feel unsafe."&nbsp;

"We're taking action to make sure police have the tools they need to ensure safe and comfortable communities for everyone as we expand treatment options, so people can stay alive and get better," he added.

<h2>The experiment</h2>

When British Columbia started the experiment in 2023, it was a big change in how the law treats drug use. The experiment sought to help people who use drugs instead of punishing them or making them feel like criminals.&nbsp;

The plan was supposed to run for three years and be closely watched by the federal and provincial governments.

At the time, Canada's health minister said it could be a model for other places, and the province's health officer believed it could make a real difference in the overdose crisis happening in British Columbia.

However, now, the province is scaling back on the decriminalisation effort. While experts say that fixing the drug supply is crucial to stopping deaths, many people are unhappy with the open drug use and the number of deaths. Some think the government has been too lenient.

In a statement, Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General said, "Our communities are facing big challenges. People are dying from deadly street drugs, and we see the issues with public use and disorder on our streets."

"As we continue to go after the gangs and organized criminals who are making and trafficking toxic drugs, we're taking action now to make it illegal to use drugs in public spaces, and to expand access to treatment to help people who need it most." &nbsp;

As per the Guardian, people will still be allowed to have a small amount — 2.5g — of certain drugs in private places, like homes or safe injection sites. However, police will now be able to take drugs from people using them in public or even arrest them in some cases.

However, the decision to roll back the decriminalisation has been criticised by advocacy groups, who say the province didn't give the experiment a "fair chance". They have also alleged that the province is using it as an excuse for other problems like the housing crisis and poverty.

On X, Moms Stop the Harm posted, "BC never gave #decrim a fair chance. It is blamed for social issues that are the result of policy failure[s] resulting in a housing crisis &amp; poverty."

"Rather than address the real issues [Eby] found a convenient scapegoat. Our loved ones die," it added.

Separately, former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said all indicators of the economy were negative and the government's decision to seek another bailout from the IMF was an admission of their "failure", The Express Tribune newspaper reported.
