A Thai political activist died in custody on Tuesday, the Department of corrections said, and a legal aid group said she had been on a partial hunger strike during her pre-trial detention on charges including insulting the country's monarchy.

Netiporn "Bung" Sanesangkhom, 28, was part of a small anti-monarchy group called "Thaluwang," a name that translates to "shattering the palace", which organised actions such as opinion polls questioning the monarchy's power and holding small gatherings seeking the release of the detained members.

She had been jailed since January 26 this year. Initially Netiporn was held for one month on a contempt of court charge related to a scuffle with court guards in 2023, legal aid group Thai Lawyers for Human Rights said.

Her pre-trial detention was extended after a court revoked her bail from a separate royal insult case stemming from a protest in 2022, the legal aid group said.

While in detention, Netiporn refused to take food and water for a month as a protest against political activists not being granted bail. She started drinking water in late February, and then eating in April after she was sent to a prison hospital because of her deteriorating health, the legal aid group said.

Netiporn's heart "stopped suddenly" on Tuesday, the department said in a statement, and the medical team at the prison hospital tried to revive her before sending her to Thammasat University Hospital where she was declared dead.

The department said the university hospital will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Netiporn was facing seven court cases related to her activism, including two charges of lese majeste violations, or insulting the monarchy.

Thailand's lese majeste law, one of the strictest in the world protects the palace from criticism and carries a jail sentence of up to 15 years for each violation.

More than 272 people have been charged with insulting the monarchy since 2020, with 17 of those currently jailed in pre-trial detentions, according to Thai Lawyers for Human Rights.

Two other activists from the Thaluwang group who have been held in pre-trial detention since February are also on hunger strikes.

Another two other members of the group have fled the country, and remaining members could not be reached for comment.

A Boeing jet owned by former US President Donald Trump collided with a parked plane at a Florida airport early Sunday morning (May 12) after making a safe landing and taxiing, Reuters reported citing sources.

The incident took place at West Palm Beach International Airport in Florida. Donald Trump's residence Mar-a-Lago is also located in Palm Beach.&nbsp;

As per reports, Trump's Boeing 757, with the tail number N757AF, made contact with a parked VistaJet aircraft. No injuries were reported in connection to the incident.&nbsp;

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a statement confirming the incident, but there was no mention that the aircraft was Trump-owned.

A winglet is a small, upward-sloping, or downward-sloping projection at the tip of an aircraft wing and is designed to improve the aerodynamic performance of the aircraft by reducing drag.&nbsp;

The Trump campaign has not yet made any official statement on the incident.

The former United States President Donald Trump’s ex-lawyer turned foe Michael Cohen returned to the witness stand, on Tuesday (May 14) amid the ongoing historic criminal trial of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. This comes a day after Cohen, a key witness, testified that the former president had personally authorised him to make hush money payment to a porn star weeks ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

<h2>About Cohen’s testimony&nbsp;</h2>

At the beginning of his testimony, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/michael-cohen-trumps-fixer-turned-foe-says-he-was-told-to-handle-hush-money-payments-721137">Trump’s former lawyer</a> recounted an Oval Office meeting with Trump in February 2017 when the former president had just been inaugurated saying that he would receive his first two instalments of a bonus package.

The package in question, Cohen testified, included reimbursements for the hush money payment made to Daniels. The ex-Trump lawyer was asked about a series of invoices and checks – some of them signed by the former president himself – by Prosecutor Susan Hoffinger.&nbsp;

Cohen said that those were falsely marked as paying for retainer services. “There was no retainer agreement, was there?” asked Hoffinger, as per Reuters, to which Cohen responded by saying “No, ma’am.”

Eight of the false checks were personally signed by Trump, reported the news agency.&nbsp;Trump's former lawyer also admitted that he repeatedly lied on behalf of the Republican.

"In order to protect Mr. Trump, to stay on message, to demonstrate my continued loyalty," Cohen testified.&nbsp;

After his home was raided by the FBI in 2018, the star witness said that Trump calmed him down. "He said to me, ‘Don’t worry, I’m the President of the United States, there’s nothing here...I felt reassured because I had the President of the United States protecting me," Cohen said.&nbsp;

Cohen, the prosecution’s star witness, took to the stand&nbsp;once again&nbsp;on Tuesday&nbsp;where he also was grilled by&nbsp;Trump attorney Todd Blanche after which he admitted to&nbsp;calling the former president a "dictator douchebag" on TikTok.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;cross-examination was predictably tense with&nbsp;Blanche questioning Cohen about his social media posts about Trump, and continued amid&nbsp;rapid-fire objections from Hoffinger.&nbsp;

On Monday (May 13), when&nbsp;the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/michael-cohen-testifies-donald-trump-was-confident-about-replacing-melania-721146">former lawyer first testified</a> he&nbsp;said that he had&nbsp;spoken to Trump immediately after wiring the $130,000 hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels and that it was one of the many times he worked “at the direction of and for the benefit” of the former president.&nbsp;

The former president is on trial based on the charges stemming from hush money allegedly paid to Daniels, 45, ahead of the 2016 presidential election. The prosecutors have alleged that Trump falsified business records to cover up the payment that Cohen made to the adult film actress in the run-up to the election.&nbsp;

<h2>House Speaker, Republican governors in court</h2>

The court also witnessed an entourage of Republican supporters along with Trump on Tuesday, including the Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson.&nbsp;

Before entering the Manhattan courthouse, Johnson parroted Trump’s rhetoric and said that the justice system is being “weaponized” against the former president and is “not about justice” but rather “all about politics.”

While Trump has been barred by the gag order to not talk about those involved in the case, he seemed to have pushed the House Speaker to do his bidding as&nbsp;Johnson&nbsp;criticised&nbsp;Manhattan&nbsp;District Attorney Alvin Bragg – who brought the case against Trump – and other court officials as partisans, reported the Associated Press.

He also called Cohen “a man who is clearly on a mission for personal revenge” and “has trouble with the truth.”

Other Republican supporters of the former president included his former GOP rival Vivek Ramaswamy, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, and US Representatives from Florida, Byron Donalds and Cory Mills.&nbsp;

Notably, Burgum and Donalds are on Trump’s long list of potential vice presidential contenders.

In a five-page ruling, a&nbsp;New York court, on Tuesday&nbsp;rejected Trump's bid to&nbsp;lift the gag order imposed by Judge&nbsp;Juan Merchan who is overseeing the hush money trial.&nbsp;

The judge "properly weighed petitioner's First Amendment Rights against the court's historical commitment to ensuring the fair administration of justice in criminal cases, and the right of persons related or tangentially related to the criminal proceedings from being free from threats, intimidation, harassment, and harm," said the ruling.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

So far, judge Merchan has held Trump in contempt of court for violating the gag order 10 times and fined him $1,000 per violation. The former president,&nbsp;last week, was also warned&nbsp;that he could be sent to jail for future violations.&nbsp;

The research challenged conventional baselines by recalibrating temperature data against a broader historical context. By leveraging tree ring chronologies, which offer a detailed glimpse into past climate conditions, scientists could extend their analysis beyond the confines of modern instrumental records that only go back as far as 1850.&nbsp;

"Many of the conversations we have around global warming are tied to a baseline temperature from the mid-19th century, but why is this the baseline?" questioned co-author Professor Ulf Büntgen from Cambridge's Department of Geography.

"Only when we look at climate reconstructions can we better account for natural variability and put recent anthropogenic climate change into context."

Ivanov denies accusations that he received bribes worth $11 million in the form of property services from a construction company in return for contracts.

Iran's acclaimed filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof announced that he had fled from his country to Europe after he was given a prison sentence by a court on national security charges.

In an Instagram post, Rasoulof criticised the Iranian government and called it a tyrannical and oppressive regime. He also shared a video which showed him crossing the mountainous border of the country.

“If geographical Iran suffers beneath the boots of your religious tyranny, cultural Iran is alive in the common minds of millions of Iranians who were forced to leave Iran due to your brutality and no power can impose its will on it. From today, I am a resident of cultural Iran,” Rasoulof said.

In another statement on May 12, Rasoulof stated that he would be escaping from Iran after his lawyers informed him about his prison sentence getting implemented on short notice.

Conflict in Sudan and Gaza pushed the number of internally displaced people (IDPs) worldwide to a record 75.9 million at the end of 2023, an NGO monitor said Tuesday.

The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre said the figure was a new end-of-year high by its count, with the number of people displaced within their own borders having increased by more than 50 percent in the last five years.

The figure was up from 71.1 million at the end of 2022.

While refugees are those who have fled abroad, internal displacement refers to the forced movement of people within the country they live in.

In its annual Global Report on Internal Displacement, the IDMC said that 68.3 million people worldwide were displaced by conflict and violence, and 7.7 million by disasters.

Over the past five years, the number of IDPs resulting from conflict has increased by 22.6 million, with the two biggest increases in 2022 and 2023.

At 9.1 million, Sudan has the highest number of IDPs recorded for a single country since records began in 2008, the monitor said. Almost half of all IDPs live in sub-Saharan Africa.

"Over the past two years, we've seen alarming new levels of people having to flee their homes due to conflict and violence, even in regions where the trend had been improving," said IDMC director Alexandra Bilak.

"Conflict, and the devastation it leaves behind, is keeping millions from re-building their lives, often for years on end."

The monitor also keeps track of the number of internal displacements: each new forced movement of a person within their borders. People can be displaced several times over.

Last year there were 46.9 million forced movements of people – 20.5 million internal displacements by conflict and violence, and 26.4 million by disasters.

Fighting in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Palestinian territories accounted for nearly two-thirds of new movements of people due to conflict in 2023.

In the Gaza Strip, 1.7 million Palestinians were internally displaced by the end of 2023, with 3.4 million new movements. The bloodiest-ever Gaza war broke out in October last year.

Cohen further recalled Trump telling him, "Women will hate me. Guys, will think it's cool but this will ruin the campaign."

However, it is not clear whether Melania knew about the hush money payment, but according to Cohen, after he left Trump a voicemail stating that Daniels might sell her story to the Daily Mail, Melania had texted him, "Good morning Michael, can u pls call DT on his cell. Thanks."

Cohen said that Trump asked him to postpone payment to Daniels until after the 2016 election, reasoning that if Trump won, he would already be president, and if he lost, it wouldn't have consequences.&nbsp;

Cohen testified that he had no plans to stick to the agreement's funding deadline with Daniels.

"A nearby police station was on fire and a car was also torched in front of my house. There was non-stop shouting and explosions, I felt like I was in a war," said Sylvie, an eyewitness.

Around 36 people were arrested and 30 police officers were injured, according to authorities.

He also described legal fixing for Trump with the press: “If they said something that angered him, I would reach out to the press and express to them they needed to redact or take the article down, or we would file an action against him.”

The situation was particularly bad in Minnesota where the state’s Pollution Control Agency issued the alert for the entire state on Sunday which was supposed to end on Monday afternoon (local time) but was later extended until 11:00 pm (local time).&nbsp;

In neighbouring Wisconsin, the state’s Department of Natural Resources issued an air quality alert for the northwestern part of the state. The alert went into effect on Monday morning, 10:00 am (local time) and will end on Tuesday (May 15) at midnight.&nbsp;

This comes as the department forecasted the AQI for dozens of counties to be between 101 and 150 which is deemed “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups”.&nbsp;

The smoke is reportedly expected to drift to Omaha, Nebraska by Monday evening.&nbsp;
