<p>Parts of the collapsed Baltimore bridge broke into pieces after a controlled blast was carried out and made the way for the complete return of shipping via one of the busiest sea routes in the United States.</p>

<p>On March 26, a ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge which led to its collapse and killed six construction workers.</p>

<p>The demolition carried out on Monday (May 13) broke some chunks of the collapsed bridge. Over the weekend, the operation was delayed because of the bad weather.</p>

<p>A cargo ship, named Dali, had lost power and went off course after which it hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge and led to its collapse. Because of the collision, nearly 4,000 tonnes of debris fell into the Patapsco River.</p>

<h2><strong>How did the blast take place?</strong></h2>

<p>The officials had placed small explosive devices throughout the entire bridge and within a few seconds, all of them were detonated.</p>

<p>At points where the explosives were placed,&nbsp;cuts were made in the steel and they were covered with what appeared like heavy-duty tape.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The US Army Corps of Engineers said that this was the "safest and swiftest" way to remove thousands of tonnes of wreckage which was lying over the massive ship.</p>

<p>The crew members were on the ship when the blast occurred.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"They're staying on board because they're part of the ship. They are necessary to keep the ship safe and operational," Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath&nbsp;from the US&nbsp;Coast Guard said.</p>

<h2><strong>What is the next step?</strong></h2>

<p>According to the officials, the next step in the cleanup process is to carry out an assessment of some trusses on Dali’s bow and ensure none of the underwater wreckage is stopping the ship from being refloated.</p>

<p>The officials will need a couple of days to remove the ship and open the channel.</p>

<p>“If we have the data you are talking about, as well as the information on residence status, we will make sure those who are eligible to pay tax in Pakistan on rental income or capital value are doing so,” Malik Amjed Zubair Tiwana, chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) told Dawn.</p>

<p>“It may be a sensitive matter, and perhaps the law will have to change, but with political will we will go all out against tax evaders. The government is prepared for this,” he added.</p>

<p>Further implicating Pakistani figures, the report references Faisal Vawda, wife of Mohsin Naqvi, Hussain Nawaz, and Sharjeel Memon, alongside multiple members of the Sindh and Balochistan assemblies. Moreover, over a dozen bureaucrats, a diplomat, and police chiefs are named in the list.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What does the law say?</strong></h2>

<p>People who live in Pakistan for more than 183 days a year must value their assets abroad based on the current exchange rate. If these assets are worth more than Rs100 million, they have to pay a one per cent tax on them. This law is being questioned in high courts and the Supreme Court.</p>

<p>But if you're a Pakistani living abroad, you only have to pay taxes on the money you make in Pakistan. You don't need to tell the government about any assets you have overseas.</p>

<p>It is to be noted that just a mere mention in the data is not evidence in itself of financial crime or tax fraud, said the Dawn report.</p>

<p>"In fact, several of those approached by Dawn for comment on their properties said they were declared to the tax authorities," it said.</p>

<p>Even as questions remain why the US continued with this trade in spite of public pronouncements against Russia over Ukraine war, a waiver system could make this law practically dead on arrival.</p>

<p>A report earlier by S&amp;P Global had said that as per the waiver system, "companies with enriched uranium contracts with Russia can seek to continue to receive their material by demonstrating they do not have viable alternate sources of fuel or that continued deliveries are in the national interest."</p>

<p>A Reuters report seemed to suggest that under the waivers, if implemented by the Energy Department, Russian uranium imports to the US could continue normally through 2027.</p>

<p>Anatoly Antonov, Russia's ambassador to the United States, said that Washington's decision surprising in global economic relations, but will not bring any results.</p>

<p>"The balance between exporters and importers of uranium products is being disrupted," the Russian embassy in Washington cited Antonov as saying in a post on its Telegram messaging channel.</p>

<p>Reports in the US media cited the former president sitting back in his chair with his eyes closed as Cohen told the court on Monday (May 13) that Trump "approved" the hush money repayment plan. Trump then allegedly told Cohen, "This is gonna be one heck of a ride in [Washington] DC."</p>

<p>Trump faces 34 counts of business fraud for allegedly reimbursing Cohen for the payment through transactions masked as legal expenses.</p>

<p>The total would be far larger than what Cohen originally paid because he would be taxed on the payments, he said.</p>

<p>The spectre of Cohen's testimony was just a matter of time in the ongoing trial. His name popped up as prosecutors walked jurors down a trail of bank statements, text messages, witness testimony, emails and recordings of crucial conversations.</p>

<p>His version of events and conversations from 2016 could come back to haunt Trump as he seeks to return to the White House.</p>

<p>Cohen, who served time in prison for crimes related to the payment, is one of the few witnesses who could help US prosecutors establish that Trump knew about the alleged reimbursement scheme.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cohen also testified that Trump told him to "be prepared" for negative publicity after announcing his 2016 presidential bid.</p>

<p>"There's going to be a lot of women coming forward," he allegedly said.</p>

<p>He said Trump instructed him to "handle" several hush-money payments.</p>

Indian UN staff member killed as Israel intensifies Gaza offensive from north and south

<p>Major Harrison Mann, a former US military intelligence official, resigned from the Department of Defence in protest over America's support for Israel. He said that the support "enabled and empowered" the killing of civilians in the ongoing war in Gaza.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a letter released on Monday (May 13), he explained to his colleagues at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) that his November resignation was because of the "nearly unqualified support" and "moral injury" stemming from US support for Israel's war.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a letter shared with colleagues last month, Mann wrote, "I was afraid. Afraid of violating our professional norms. Afraid of disappointing officers I respect. Afraid you would feel betrayed. I'm sure some of you will feel that way reading this."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The letter was published on his LinkedIn profile on Monday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The policy that has never been far from my mind for the past six months is the nearly unqualified support for the government of Israel, which has enabled and empowered the killing and starvation of tens of thousands of innocent Palestinians," Mann wrote in the post.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This unconditional support also encourages reckless escalation that risks wider war," he added.&nbsp;</p>
