As Ukraine faces a series of losses on the frontlines amid its ongoing war with Russia, a report by the New York Times said Kyiv has ramped up conscription efforts and while many Ukrainian men have answered the call to serve, thousands are either hiding or fleeing the country.&nbsp;

<h2>Thousands try to evade conscription</h2>

Vladyslav, a 45-year-old Ukrainian who went into hiding, told the NYT that officers serving draft notices are “everywhere now,” forcing thousands who are trying to evade conscription to either stay in hiding or flee the war-torn country.&nbsp;

According to the report, even before the latest mobilisation push thousands of Ukrainian men fled the country, including some who swam across the river separating Ukraine and Romania.&nbsp;

The report noted that while the number of men trying to avoid being drafted is unclear, tens of thousands of men are part of social media groups which alert other members about the movements of draft officers.&nbsp;

NYT citing military analysts said that Kyiv is having a difficult time holding its lines because the Ukrainian troops often lack proper and enough training as Ukraine is quick to send personnel to the battleground to replace losses.&nbsp;

However, Colonel Volodymyr Novosiadlyi, an official responsible for conscription in Kyiv told the newspaper that those drafted are trained for at least a month and that the military is also trying to treat draftees with fairness and empathy.&nbsp;

He added, “Every citizen should understand the need to fulfill their duties” in defending their country.

The mobilisation law passed in April made it compulsory for all draft-age men to register their details on a government website based on which the draftees would be chosen. Failure to register by July 16 will be a criminal offence.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, the Ukrainian parliament also adopted a law which authorised certain convicts to fight on the frontlines. The move, which Russia was once criticised for, led thousands of prisoners to trade their prison jumpsuits for Ukrainian army uniforms.&nbsp;

More than 2,750 convicts have been released from Ukrainian prisons since the law was adopted in May, according to a report by the Washington Post.&nbsp;

The law authorised certain convicts including those jailed for dealing drugs and committing armed assaults and murders were allowed to enlist.&nbsp;

However, it does not allow those convicted of crimes against the foundations of national security of Ukraine, or particularly serious corruption offences.

Kenya's President William Ruto said Sunday that he was ready for "a conversation" with thousands of "peaceful" young protesters who held nationwide demonstrations this week to oppose proposed tax increases.

Organised on social media and led largely by Gen-Z Kenyans who have livestreamed the demonstrations, the protests have caught Ruto's government off-guard, as discontent mounts over his economic policies.&nbsp;

"I am very proud of our young people... they have stepped forward peaceful and I want to tell them we are going to engage them," Ruto said in his first public comments on the protests.

"We are going to have a conversation so that together we can build a greater nation," Ruto said during a church service in the Rift Valley town of Nyahururu.

His characterisation of the protests as "peaceful" came after rights campaigners reported two deaths following Thursday's demonstrations in Nairobi.&nbsp;

There was no immediate response from the protesters, who have called for a national strike on June 25.

The demonstrations were mostly peaceful, but officers fired tear gas and water cannon throughout the day to disperse protesters near parliament.

According to a Kenya Human Rights Commission official, 21-year-old Evans Kiratu was "hit by a tear gas canister" during the protests and died in hospital.

On Friday, a police watchdog said it was investigating allegations that a 29-year-old man was shot by officers in Nairobi after the demonstrations.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) said it had "documented the death... allegedly as a result of police shooting" on Thursday.

Several organisations, including Amnesty International Kenya, said that at least 200 people were injured in the protests in Nairobi, as thousands of people take to the streets across the country.

- Cash-strapped government -

Ruto's administration has defended the proposed levies as necessary for filling its coffers and cutting reliance on external borrowing.

Following smaller-scale demonstrations on Tuesday, the cash-strapped government agreed to roll back several tax hikes laid out in a new bill.

But Ruto's administration still intends to increase some taxes, defending the proposed levies as necessary to raise money.

Kenya has a debt mountain, and servicing costs have ballooned due to a fall in the value of the local currency over the last two years, leaving Ruto with few options.

The tax hikes will pile further pressure on Kenyans, with many already struggling as the cost of living surges and well-paid jobs remain out of reach for young people.

The incumbent US president and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign responded to Trump’s latest remarks calling them “incoherent” and “unhinged”.&nbsp;

“Fitting that convicted felon Donald Trump spent his time at a religious conference threatening to round up Latinos, bragging about ripping away Americans’ freedoms, and promising to be even more extreme if he regains power,” said a spokesperson for the Biden campaign, Sarafina Chitika.&nbsp;

She added, “Trump’s incoherent, unhinged tirade showed voters in his own words that he is a threat to our freedoms and is too dangerous to be let anywhere near the White House again.”

While speaking to the group of evangelicals Trump said they “cannot afford to sit on the sidelines” during the upcoming election.&nbsp;

The opponents of the law have said that they will challenge in court&nbsp;the new mandate, which raises questions about the constitutional separation of church and state.&nbsp;

“Has anyone read the ‘Thou shalt not steal’? I mean, has anybody read this incredible stuff? It’s just incredible,” Trump said on Saturday. He added, “They don’t want it to go up. It’s a crazy world.’’

The former president’s remarks were met with cheers, as he&nbsp;sought the support of the religious right ahead of the election in November.&nbsp;

“Passengers due to fly from terminal 3 should come to the airport as normal unless advised otherwise by their airline, but could be affected by delays,” said the group.&nbsp;

Airport authorities also said that they are working to get passengers already at the airport on their flights as soon as possible to work through some of the backlog.&nbsp;

The disruption on the UK’s third-busiest airport comes at the beginning of the summer holiday season.&nbsp;

“All of this is happening at a time when aviation is just getting into the peak season, very heavy bookings on flights, and if you knock out a whole load of those, then it’s going to get very messy, and you could find people waiting several days to get where they need to be,” travel expert Simon Calder told Leading Britain’s Conversation (LBC).&nbsp;

He also said that there have been “crowds of many thousands of people” waiting for hours as of Sunday morning and no flights are leaving.&nbsp;

The airport, as per the travel expert, was also going to instruct airlines to “cancel a whole swathe of flights for several hours…in a bid to recover the operation later today”.
