The Mexican government has paused its relationship with the U.S. and Canadian embassies in the country, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Tuesday, after their ambassadors criticised a proposed judicial reform that he backs.

"There is a pause," Lopez Obrador said in a press conference, clarifying that the freeze was with the embassies and not with the countries.

The president is pushing a reform to elect judges, including Supreme Court justices, by popular vote. A committee in the lower house of Mexico's Congress passed the proposal late on Monday, paving the way for it to be approved when the newly elected Congress takes office in September.

U.S. Ambassador Ken Salazar last week labelled the reform a "major risk to the functioning of Mexico's democracy" and cautioned of a potential risk to the U.S.-Mexico trade relationship.

The U.S. and Mexico are each other's largest trade partners.

Canada's ambassador to Mexico, Graeme Clark, also warned of investment concerns.

It was not entirely clear what impact such a pause - limited to the embassies in Mexico - would have. The U.S. and Canadian embassies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Proponents say the reform will boost democracy and help fix a system that they argue does not serve the public, while critics say it will skew power in favor of the executive, cut off judges' careers, and make the courts more susceptible to criminal influence.

The pause in the relationship with the U.S. embassy is "because (the U.S. ambassador) is looking to talk with us," Lopez Obrador said.

"How are we going to allow the ambassador to give his opinion, to say what we're doing is wrong?" Lopez Obrador added. "We aren't going to tell him to get out of the country. But for him to read our Constitution, yes, we will say that."

Salazar had said he was open to speaking with Mexican government leaders to discuss different judicial models.

Lopez Obrador said the "pause" would continue until "there was confirmation that (the embassies) would respect Mexico's independence."

Mexico's peso was down 1.3% in mid-morning trade after the president's comments.

It has dropped sharply since the June elections, in which Lopez Obrador's favoured successor Claudia Sheinbaum won the presidency and their Morena party and allies bagged a supermajority in the lower house and nearly a supermajority in the Senate.

A two-thirds vote is necessary to amend the Constitution, which the judicial reform would need to do.

Iran’s former foreign minister Javad Zarif returns as vice president after quitting post

Delta Air Lines has launched a full investigation after two of its workers were reported killed at its facility at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The US airline said another worker was injured in the incident at the maintenance facility.

News agency AP reported that the two men died after a tyre explosion, which occurred as they were removing it from a plane. Of the two men, one was a Delta employee and the other was a contract worker.

Several fire engines and police units were rushed to the facility near the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport shortly after 5 am local time, reported the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Delta, in a statement, said it was “heartbroken” after the incident.

"The IAEA delegation visited the site of the first and the second phases of the NPP and assessed the plant’s operation against the background of relentless Ukrainian provocations," Rosatom said.&nbsp;

In recent weeks, Russia has been making allegations regarding Ukraine's attempts to target the nuclear power generation facility. There are unconfirmed reports from last week&nbsp;of Russian air defence systems shooting down Ukrainian drones in the Kursk region, some of which are said to have been near spent nuclear fuel storage facilities. Russian President Putin had also reportedly mentioned Ukraine attempting a nighttime strike at the Kursk Nuclear power plant.

Philippines accuses China of using 'excessive force' to block food delivery to Shoal

The political deadlock in France is nowhere near to being resolved after President Emmanuel Macron ruled out naming a left-wing government on Monday (Aug 26).&nbsp;

Citing threat to the "institutional stability" of the country, Macron said he would initiate fresh talks to find a new prime minister.&nbsp;

A mother in Ohio, United States, handcuffed her son and let a pit bull maul him. The woman's boyfriend and the six-year-old's uncle are now facing child endangerment charges for the heinous act. Deputies received a call about the boy who faced the terrible tragedy on August 17 in a Northeast Ohio home.&nbsp;

The boy was punished by his mother and the other two men for failing to clean up after the dog. The woman, Angelina Williams, told the court that she wasn't aware that handcuffing a child was illegal.&nbsp;

"The dog is not even my dog. The cuffs are not even my cuffs," Williams said in a court in Ashland County last week.&nbsp;

The dog was owned by the boy's uncle Robert Michalski Jr who also owned the residence where the attack took place. Williams's boyfriend, Taylor Desiree Marvin Brown, was also visiting the place when the incident took place.&nbsp;

"I didn't even know the cuffs were illegal or anything was wrong with it. My uncle told me it was OK," the woman added.&nbsp;

The Polaris Dawn crew involves four members: billionaire Jared Isaacman, who is going to lead and command; pilot Scott “Kidd” Poteet, a retired US Air Force lieutenant colonel; and two SpaceX engineers, Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon, who are appointed as mission specialists.

This mission is the first of three planned in the Polaris programme, fully funded and commanded by Isaacman, who earlier led the Inspiration4 mission in September 2021.

The Polaris Dawn will not join the International Space Station but will be a free-flying mission in Earth’s orbit.

The crew will reach an altitude of up to 700 kilometres. The mission will extend over 5 days, and include different scientific experiments and even testing SpaceX’s new extravehicular activity (EVA) suit, designed for the vacuum of space.

“It’ll look like we’re doing a little bit of a dance. And what that is, we’re going through a series of test matrices on the suit,” Isaacman said. “The idea is to learn as much as we possibly can about the suit and get it back to the engineers to inform future suit design evolutions.”

The EVA suits, designed by SpaceX and developed in-house, are not specifically made for Polaris Dawn, but it is the vision of the company to use them in further missions or build future versions of them, like for various Earth orbits or beyond.

“It’s not lost on us that, you know, it might be 10 iterations from now and a bunch of evolutions of the suit, but that, someday, someone could be wearing a version of which that might be walking on Mars,” Isaacman said. “And it feels like, again, a huge honour to have that opportunity to test it out on this flight.”
