<p>Germany's military put the first Iris-T air-defence system into service on its own soil Wednesday (Sep 4) having delivered several of them to war-torn Ukraine to intercept Russian rockets, drones and missiles.</p>

<p>Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the surface-to-air system was part of a build-up of German and European defences launched after Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the Ukraine invasion in 2022.</p>

<p>"Russia has been massively rearming for many years, especially in the field of rockets and cruise missiles," Scholz said at the inauguration ceremony at a base in Todendorf near the northern city of Hamburg.</p>

<p>Putin had broken disarmament treaties and "deployed missiles as far as Kaliningrad", a Russian exclave located some 530 kilometres (330 miles) from Berlin, he added.</p>

<p>"It would be negligent not to respond to this appropriately," the chancellor said. "A failure to act would put peace at risk. I will not allow that."</p>

<p>Scholz, who was joined by Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, said the system was part of the European Sky Shield Initiative, which also includes long-range defences against ballistic missiles.</p>

<p>A French man is accused of recruiting dozens of men online to sexually assault his wife while drugging her to lose her senses. The man, a 71-year-old ex-employee at France's power utility EDF, is going on trial in the case, along with 50 other men accused of raping the elderly woman.</p>

<p>One of the woman's lawyers, Antoine Camus, said that she endured rapes for over 10 years and because she was sedated, she was not aware of her ordeal in real time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"She is completely determined to face them and her husband, with whom she lived for 50 years but whom she knew nothing about, as she discovered at 68," the lawyer was quoted as saying by CBS News in its report.</p>

<p>The sexual abuse began in 2011 when the couple was living near Paris. It went on till they shifted to Mazan, about 700 km south of the French capital.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Raygun participated in three Olympic battles and lost all of them. Wearing a green tracksuit, she&nbsp;delivered a rather eccentric performance which included&nbsp;kangaroo-inspired hopping as a dance move which instantly led to a sea of memes on social media.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Post the performance, she appealed to the media in a video posted on her Instagram account to stop harassing her family and friends.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I didn't realise that that would also open the door to so much hate, which has frankly been pretty devastating," she said. "Well, I went out there and I had fun. I did take it very seriously. I worked my butt off preparing for the Olympics and I gave my all. Truly."</p>

<p>Taiwan's minister of foreign affairs Lin Chia-lung has called for Taiwan's inclusion in the United Nations (UN) system to ensure peace in the Indo-Pacific, according to an op-ed published in South Korea's Chosun Ilbo.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the op-ed, Taiwan's minister Lin underscored China's intentional distortion of UN Resolution 2758 by linking it with its "One China" principle.&nbsp;</p>

<p>China has been suppressing Taiwan's right to participate in the UN and its affiliated organizations, he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The UN should reclaim the proper interpretation of UN Resolution 2758 to maintain international peace and security as stipulated in the UN Charter and find ways to combat China’s aggressive ambitions," Lin said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier in 1971, Resolution 2758 was adopted by the 26th UN General Assembly, to address the issue of China's representation at the international body. However, it led to Taiwan, officially named the Republic of China (ROC), losing its seat at the UN to China.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since then, Taiwan has been excluded from participating in the international organization and its affiliates.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 79th UN General Assembly is scheduled to be held from September 10 to 30. Taiwan will appeal to its diplomatic allies to urge UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to correct the organisation's wrong interpretation of UN Resolution 2758 in a joint letter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Further, Lin noted that Taiwan produces over 90 per cent of the world's advanced semiconductors and plays a major role in the supply chain for global manufacturing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He continued that the Taiwan Strait has become a major international waterway, through which half of the world's maritime trade passes. However, China continues to threaten Taiwan, he added.&nbsp;</p>
