The 73-year-old former special forces commander won the Feb&nbsp;14 contest with nearly 60% of the vote and has spent the past nine months building a formidable parliamentary coalition.

Prabowo, wearing a traditional black hat and navy suit with a woven maroon and golden sarong, officially become Indonesia's eighth president on Sunday morning after he was sworn in during a ceremony at Indonesia's parliament.

Prabowo, who unsuccessfully ran for the presidency twice before, is expected to give a speech to lawmakers at the parliament's upper house and then head to the presidential palace.

He was joined in the swearing-in ceremony by his running mate, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, 37, the eldest son of outgoing President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.

As they make their way to the palace they will be greeted by thousands of flag waving supporters already thronging Jakarta streets that are lined with posters of the incoming leader.

Flower boards set up outside the palace either congratulated Prabowo and Gibran or thanked Jokowi for his decade as president.

Prabowo and Gibran are expected to stop at seven stages along the way between parliament and the palace, Nusron Wahid, a Prabowo aide, told reporters on Friday.

Jokowi supporters are also attending the celebrations to bid farewell to Indonesia's outgoing leader.

Anneta Yuniar, a bystander who had excitedly waved at Jokowi's motorcade as it slowly made its way past supporters before the ceremony, said she would miss Jokowi but that Prabowo was a strong leader.

"Prabowo will continue the development that Jokowi started. There's continuity. It's what I want," she said.

Jokowi has left an indelible mark on the nation of 280 million, presiding over a period of strong economic growth and massive infrastructure development.

Critics also say, though, his rule has been marked by a rise in old-time patronage and dynastic politics, and they warn about diminished integrity in courts and other state institutions.

Indonesian police and military have put in place strict security measures, deploying at least 100,000 personnel across the city, including snipers and anti-riot units.

Prabowo is expected to meet with foreign dignitaries, including about 20 heads of state, later on Sunday at the presidential palace, said Hasan Nasbi, the head of the presidential communications organisation.

China said it is sending Vice President Han Zheng to the inauguration. The delegation from the United States is being led by US&nbsp;Ambassador to the UN&nbsp;Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

The Afghan man, 27-year-old Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, arrested by the FBI in Oklahoma, was found to be planning a shootout on an election day on behalf of the terrorist organisation Islamic State as the United States gears up for the presidential polls in November.

Tawhedi confessed that he and&nbsp;his co-conspirator had planned to give up their lives as IS martyrs by open firing on the crowd on the election day, according to a report published in The Guardian.

Speaking on the Tawhedi case, US Attorney General Merrick Garland said that there was a continuing need to “combat the ongoing threat that (IS) and its supporters pose to America’s national security”.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, head of MI5 Ken McCallum said that the agency had “one hell of a job” in managing the increasing threat coming from the resurgent terrorist organisation.

<h2>American targets on top of IS-K's hit list</h2>

After the arrest of Tawhedi, US officials later said that the plot was being allegedly directed by an operative of IS-Khorasan (IS-K), the Afghanistan-based branch.

IS-K also released a propaganda poster in September in which the American targets were placed at the top of its hitlist.

“[IS-K] has recently reiterated its intent to target the US with a poster depicting one of its militants holding a grenade in front of the US Capitol building captioned ‘you are next,’” said Lucas Webber, who is a senior threat intelligence analyst at watchdog organisation Tech Against Terrorism.&nbsp;

In a shocking attack, a stranger had "bitten off" the face of a teenage girl on a bus, because of which she had to receive 50 stitches.

The 19-year-old Ella Dowling was going home on the bus with fellow passengers when 53-year-old Darren Taylor started making inappropriate comments about her&nbsp;and her friends.

When Ella sat down on the bus, Taylor suddenly grabbed her&nbsp;face and started biting her nose and mouth in a&nbsp;horrific five-minute-long attack.

Ella's friends helped her get away from the attacker and the passengers on the bus detained Taylor till police arrived at the location.

The police arrested the man for causing grievous bodily harm to the girl. The attack&nbsp;left Ella's nostril and lower part of her lip hanging off.

Taylor was sentenced to six years and nine months of imprisonment at Gloucester Crown&nbsp;Court after he pleaded guilty.

"When I saw my face for the first time after the attack, I didn't recognise my own reflection, and I couldn't look in the mirror for months after that. I haven't used the bus since because of my PTSD. If I leave the house, I have to be on the phone with my mum or a friend because I'm terrified that I'm going to be attacked again," she added.

"Eating and drinking can still be painful if I eat on a certain side. People say that my scar is healing well but for me, it's more than a scar, it's a disfigurement and a permanent reminder of what's happened to me.
