The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday (Nov 2) addressed the recent sanctions imposed by the United States on over a dozen Indian companies for their alleged ties to Russia amid its ongoing war with Ukraine.&nbsp;

On Wednesday (Oct 30), the US Treasury Department announced sanctions against nearly 400 firms and individuals from 17 countries, calling them “Third-Country Sanctions Evaders.” This list included 19 Indian companies, which, according to the US, have been assisting Russia in its conflict with Ukraine.

Responding to these developments, the MEA said, “We have seen reports on US sanctions. India has a robust legal and regulatory framework on strategic trade and nonproliferation controls. We are also a member of three key multilateral non-proliferation export control regimes - the Wassenaar Arrangement, the Australia Group and the Missile Technology Control Regime, and have been effectively implementing relevant UNSC sanctions and UNSC resolution 1540 on non-proliferation.”

MEA added, “Our understanding is that the sanctioned transactions and companies are not in violation of Indian laws. Nevertheless, in keeping with India's established non-proliferation credentials, we are working with all the relevant Indian departments and agencies to sensitise Indian companies on applicable export control provisions, as well as inform them on new measures being implemented that could impact Indian companies in certain circumstances.”&nbsp;

“Regular strategic trade/export control outreach events for Indian industries and stakeholders are being carried out by agencies of the Government of India. We are also in touch with the US authorities to clarify issues,” MEA said in its statement.&nbsp;

In addition to Indian firms, the US sanctions also targeted companies from Malaysia, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Singapore, and the UAE. Among the Indian companies mentioned was Ascend Aviation India Private Limited, which, according to the US State Department, allegedly sent over 700 shipments to Russian firms from March 2023 to March 2024, including aircraft components valued at over $200,000.

Other Indian businesses listed in the sanctions include Mask Trans, TSMD Global, Elektron Komponent, and Futrevo.

This move by the US comes shortly after it named an Indian official in an alleged plot involving a foiled murder-for-hire targeting Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. There had been uproar from opposition parties and local media groups, who rely heavily on social media.&nbsp;

The leaked recordings were released by an account called Missie Moustass (Mr Moustache), primarily on TikTok.&nbsp;

There have been attempts to block the account but it quickly resurfaced elsewhere and has been releasing recordings almost daily.&nbsp;

Among those causing the greatest shock was that of the police commissioner apparently asking a forensic doctor to alter a report into a person who died after being beaten in police custody. A judicial investigation into the death was launched following the leak.&nbsp;

Jugnauth is seeking re-election as head of the Militant Socialist Movement.&nbsp;

He inherited the premiership on the death of his father in 2017 and secured a victory for his coalition in polls two years later.&nbsp;

It further added, "This Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) package, which has an estimated value of $425 million, will provide Ukraine additional capabilities to meet its most urgent needs, including air defence interceptors; munitions for rocket systems and artillery; armoured vehicles; and anti-tank weapons."&nbsp;

The announcement of the aid came after the state secretary Antony Blinken said that as many as 10,000 North Korean troops were transferred to Russia, including 8,000 positioned in the Kursk region.&nbsp;

A former Kentucky police officer was convicted in federal court Friday of a civil rights abuse in the killing of&nbsp;Breonna&nbsp;Taylor, whose death sparked police reform and racial justice protests across the United States in 2020.

Brett Hankison was convicted on one count of civil rights abuse, the Justice Department said in a statement.

Though Hankinson's shots did not hit&nbsp;Taylor, a Black woman who died during a police raid on her home, he fired blindly through a bedroom window that had a curtain and blinds drawn.

Hankison is the first officer to be convicted of the four police federally charged over&nbsp;Taylor's 2020 death. Two other officers remain charged with falsifying a search warrant affidavit and another pleaded guilty to charges around the search warrant.&nbsp;

However no one was ever charged for killing&nbsp;Taylor.

The deaths of&nbsp;Taylor, 26, and George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man who was murdered by a white police officer in Minneapolis in May 2020, became the focus of a wave of mass protests in the United States and beyond against racial injustice and police brutality.

"The Justice Department will continue to vigorously defend the civil rights of every person in this country to be free from unlawful police violence," assistant attorney general Kristen Clarke said in the Justice Department statement.

Taylor&nbsp;and her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, were sleeping in her apartment around midnight on March 13, 2020 when they heard a noise at the door.

Walker, believing it was a break-in, fired his gun, wounding one police officer.

Police, who had obtained a controversial no-knock warrant to make a drug arrest, fired more than 30 shots back, mortally wounding&nbsp;Taylor.

Hankison argued he fired his gun to protect his fellow officers.

It was the second time Hankison appeared in federal court: his first trial ended in a mistrial.
