Both Wall Street and European stocks declined. The likelihood that neither the Democrats nor the Republicans would take over both chambers of Congress clouded the picture for fiscal spending and regulation.

As per Reuters, when a Democrat is in the White House and there is a split government, stock markets often fare better.

"The market is going to get what it wants: it's going to get divided government. It means gridlock is the agenda item for the next two years," said Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise Financial in Troy, Michigan.

It won't significantly change spending, but it will also prevent any significant rises, according to him.

The US congress, which as per Vox has an average age of 58 years, finally has a Gen Z member: 25-year-old gun reform and social justice activist Maxwell Frost.

The Georgia US Senate race, which could decide which party controls the upper chamber of Congress, is expected to go to a runoff in December, according to media forecasts.

CNN and NBC have predicted that the race between Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock, a Black pastor, and Republican opponent Herschel Walker, a former American football star sponsored by Donald Trump will happen on December 6.

While Democrats are reportedly ahead in the race, neither contender has obtained the required simple majority of votes required to win the election outright.

The dollar advanced against several major currencies on Wednesday, as results so far for the midterm elections showed little evidence of a "red wave" resounding Republican victory that some expected, leaving investors to focus on upcoming inflation data. 

Joe Manimbo, senior market analyst at Convera in Washington, said that a stronger showing by Republicans may have backed the idea of less fiscal support and potentially a lower peak in the Fed's terminal rate which would have been dollar negative. 

"Markets are now in the process of turning the page on politics and bracing for the inflation report tomorrow," Manimbo said.

Millions have voted in the crucial US midterm polls that could define America's future, early results have begun coming in. The Democrats have shown surprising strength in the midterm elections as results kicked in.

John Fetterman, a Democratic state lieutenant governor defeated Mehmet Oz, a TV broadcaster and heart surgeon who was supported by former President Donald Trump and won Pennsylvania's Senate seat early on Wednesday morning.

Supporter Scott Rykala, a graduate student in public policy at the University of Virginia who grew up in nearby Johnstown said, "I'm just really proud of where we came as a group of supporters and advocates, and I'm just really excited to see what the next six years bring." 

"We have been crushing the Election Day vote all across the entire state. So what's going to happen is that over the course of these next couple of hours, you're going to see the race continue to get closer and closer and closer and closer," Zeldin said on Wednesday.

Wednesday's three-way contest in Oregon could result in a Republican becoming the state's governor for the first time in 40 years. 

Democrats Tina Kotek and Christine Drazan are neck-and-neck, and independent candidate Betsy Johnson, a former Democrat, may steal votes from Kotek.

United States citizens gathered on Tuesday in Mexico City to follow the midterm elections vote results.

Edgar Lopez, spokesperson for Democrats Abroad Mexico said he expected his party not to lose the Congress as they had helped Americans living abroad to get their votes to the United States on time to be counted.
 

Since Republicans are still expected to win a majority in the House in the next midterm elections, US House of Representatives minority leader Kevin McCarthy projected he will succeed Nancy Pelosi as majority leader. 

Edison Research predicted that by early on Wednesday morning (November 9), the party had gained six Democratic House seats, one more than was required to win control of the house.

Maxwell Frost becomes the first Gen Z member elected to Congress

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said her party’s congressional candidates exceeded expectations, even as Republicans gained strong leads in many seats in the Election Day.

“While many races remain too close to call, it is clear that House Democratic Members and candidates are strongly outperforming expectations across the country,” the California Democrat said.

Democrat John Fetterman won the critical Pennsylvania Senate race, NBC News projects, flipping a seat currently held by a retiring Republican 

Top Republican in the US House of Representatives and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy expressed confidence that his party will seize the lower chamber of Congress from President Joe Biden's Democrats after Tuesday's midterm elections.

"It is clear that we are going to take the House back," Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said early Wednesday as results showed Republicans were poised to flip the seats necessary to win control.

Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has won a second term, defeating Trump-backed conservative commentator Tudor Dixon. The abortion debate ruled the election campaign in Michigan.

"We are thrilled, thrilled at the unexpected high turnout. We are thrilled that the three ballot initiatives got to pass and I never thought I'd be so happy about Fox News, but I'm glad they called this election too," said Whitmer during her speech after the elections in Detroit.

Recreational marijuana found favour with voters in Maryland but was rejected it in Arkansas and North Dakota in midterm elections which were seen as a test of legalization’s support. 

“By voting for legalization, Marylanders have rejected the failed ideas of the past and have chosen to reform their laws to protect civil liberties and promote racial justice,” Erik Altieri, executive director of NORML, said in a statement.

NORML is one of the nation’s oldest marijuana legalization advocacy groups.

Democrat Kathy Hochul, who took over from Andrew Cuomo as New York Governor in 2021 after he resigned, has become the first woman elected New York governor. She defeated Republican congressman Lee Zeldin, an ally of Donald Trump who ran a campaign focused on fear of violent crime.

Democrat John Fetterman is projected to defeat Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania's Senate race. He told his supporters he is humbled to serve as the state's next senator.

“I'm so humbled, thank you so much,” he said.

Fetterman added, "We jammed them up."

He thanked everyone who voted for him and said, "I never expected that we were going to turn these red counties blue. But we did what we needed to do."

Democrat Josh Shapiro has been elected governor of Pennsylvania. He defeated hard-right Republican candidate Doug Mastriano. Shapiro, a two-term state attorney general, will replace the term-limited Democrat Tom Wolf.

Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams conceded the gubernatorial race to Republican Governor Brian Kemp in Georgia. The contest was a repeat of 2018 but Kemp won in 2022 by a wider margin with the benefit of incumbency.

During her concession speech, Abrams said, “Even during these trying times, the fighting spirit of Georgia has prevailed.”

Democratic Representative Tim Ryan conceded the Ohio Senate race to Republican JD Vance in Tuesday's midterm elections.

Ryan told supporters it was a privilege to concede.

"I have the privilege to concede this race to J.D. Vance. Because the way this country operates is that when you lose an election, you concede and you respect, you respect the will of the people, right? We can't have a system where if you win, it's a legitimate election and if you lose, someone stole it. That is not how we can move forward in the United States," he said.

Donald Trump hailed the wins of Republican candidates and termed them as wins of those he endorsed in the midterm elections as polls closed and results poured in. “It's been a very exciting night. We have some races that are hot and heavy and we're all watching them here,” Trump told guests at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

Trump touted the victory of Florida GOP Senator Marco Rubio, who he campaigned for 

Democrat Becca Balint on Tuesday won the race for Vermont’s lone seat in the US House. She has become the first woman and first openly gay person to represent the state in Congress.

Donald Trump came out and spoke to an audience as Republicans seem to be leading the race to win the House of Representatives. He hailed the early results and congratulated the winners and those leading their races.

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar was re-elected to represent Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District for a third term. She defeated Republican challenger Cicely Davis.

Problems happened with dozens of electronic vote-counting machines in the Arizona on Tuesday. Former President Donald Trump and his followers immediately seized upon the information and falsely claimed it was evidence of election fraud by Democrats.

According to CNN, Republican Katie Britt will be the first elected female senator from Alabama, and is on socurse to succeed her onetime boss, retiring GOP Sen. Richard Shelby.

Britt is a former CEO of the Business Council of Alabama and was the heavy favorite in the general election in the deep-red state.

Two women have previously represented Alabama in the Senate, but both were appointed to fill vacancies.

Biden advisers feel that things are likely not headed towards a blowout that some had predicted heading into this week.

Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib is projected to win re-election in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District

New Hampshire has become the first state to elect an transgender man to a state legislature. Democrat James Roesener won his race to represent New Hampshire State.

Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey was chosen governor of Massachusetts, making history as the state’s first woman and first openly gay candidate elected to the office. She defeated Republican Geoff Diehl, a former state representative who was backed by Trump.

Former US President Donald Trump has warned Florida Governor Ron DeSantis against running for president in 2024, telling him that the move might harm the Republican Party. "I think he would be making a mistake. I think the base would not like it," the former president told Fox News.

He also threatened to release unflattering information about him.

Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has won re-election to a second term, beating Democrat Charlie Crist. He is now one of the prominent GOP leaders on route to become a potential candidate for the White House.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer beat Republican challenger Joe Pinion Tuesday to win a fifth consecutive six-year term. He has now surpassed Daniel Patrick Moynihan as New York's longest serving US senator. Schumer was first elected to the Senate in 1998 and became majority leader after the 2020 elections. 

Republican Jerry Moran wins re-election to the Senate in Kansas, NBC News projects

Republican Sarah Huckabee Sanders will be the first woman elected governor of Arkansas, as per a CNN projection. Sanders had served as press secretary under former President Donald Trump. The officer has been held by her father previously for over a decade.

Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wins re-election to the US House in New York's 14th Congressional District, NBC News projects 

Republican Senator Marco Rubio has won a third term, defeating Val Demings in Florida. He now holds a key seat in the race for the control of the Senate. 

Republican Senator Rand Paul has won re-election in Kentucky.

As per an Associated Press prediction Peter Welch will defeat Republican competitor Gerald Malloy by winning 67 per cent of the votes.

We might not learn the outcome of key races until later in the week, as the official election results won't be available anytime soon. 

News outlets, including the Associated Press and major television networks, examine statistics as election results in an effort to predict who will win.

These projected results are separate from the official election's vote-counting processes, but can provide a rough idea of what can be expected.

Polling stations closed Tuesday in several states in the high-stakes US midterm elections, with control of Congress up for grabs and the future of President Joe Biden's agenda in the balance.

Parts of Indiana and Kentucky were the first to close polling places at 6:00 pm (2300 GMT). At stake are all 435 seats in the House, one-third of the Senate and a slew of state and local positions. Five states are holding referendums on abortion

Officials were forced to scramble to reassure voters of the integrity of the US election due to isolated issues with voting machines and absentee ballots after two years of unsubstantiated charges of fraud eroded faith in democracy.

Long lines were observed in Texas after several machines there went down, and problems were reported with ballots not being received in Georgia.

One-fifth of the polling machines in a area of Arizona were also reportedly malfunctioning. Some of the 223 polling locations in Maricopa County, also reported having issues.

Midterm elections are underway in the US and several celebrities have already shared on which candidate they are supporting this year. From Harry Styles to Chris Pratt to Cher to Selena Gomez to Katy Perry, - celebs have chosen their candidates and extended their support on social media.

As investors wagered on a market-friendly outcome of the US election, European markets closed at their highest level in eight weeks.

The possibility of Republican victories lifted investor sentiment and caused the safe-haven currency, the dollar, to decline versus a basket of international currencies.

The euro increased by 0.47 per cent to $1.0066 while the dollar index decreased by 0.37 per cent.

At last trade, the British Sterling was trading at $1.1532, up 0.18  per cent on the day, while the Japanese yen advanced 0.72 per cent against the dollar to 145.60 per dollar.

Gold prices rose against a falling dollar.
 

As Americans went to the polls on Tuesday and market traders bided their time waiting to know whether Capitol Hill is in for a power shift, US stocks fluctuated and Treasury yields paused.

An early rally gathered momentum early in the session but lost steam into the afternoon, with the S&P 500 dipping into red and back again.

As per Joseph Sroka, chief investment officer at NovaPoint in Atlanta, "the biggest concern around the election is we may not know the results today."

"There's some optimism around the potential for a divided government, with the democrats controlling the White House and the republicans potentially ready to take control of one or both chambers of congress," Sroka added.

"A more conservative fiscal policy which could be enacted by Republican-controlled congress would put less inflationary pressure on the economy and that would make the Fed’s job easier," he said, adding that gridlocks in Washington have historically been positive for equity markets.

In order to reassure attendees at the UN climate meeting in Egypt that it will continue with its energy transition even if Republicans win the November elections, the United States John Kerry, the US climate envoy, speaking on the margins of the meeting said that the "climate crisis doesn't just threaten our infrastructure, economy and security -- it threatens every single aspect of our lives on a daily basis."

He claimed that even if Democrats lose the election, President Biden is "more determined than ever to continue what we are doing."

Democrats, led by President Joe Biden, will have to fight hard to keep their majority in Congress against Republicans, who are less supportive of global climate action.

As mid-term elections loom the horizon, the White House said that the United State's support for Ukraine's war efforts will be "unwavering" even if Republicans were to win the elections.

Talking to reporters Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that the support will be unwavering and unflinching. "We are confident the United States' support will be unflinching and will be unwavering."

At a campaign rally Monday night, former US president Donald Trump yet again teased a presidential rerun in 2024. He told the crowd that he would be making a "very big announcement" on November 15 at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida. Reports have been doing the rounds that Trump is set to announce another presidential run in 2024 some time around mid-November. The announcement in Ohio is a clear indication that he will throw his hat in the ring.

As voters head to the polls on Election Day, more than 45 million pre-election ballots have already been cast across the 47 states where figures were available, according to data from elections officials, Edison Research and Catalist.

The US midterm elections 2022 is already the most expensive in history as report suggested that it has seen spending in excess of $16.7 billion from all candidates. That is around $2 billion more than the 2018 midterm elections.

Polls opened in Ohio on Tuesday (November 8) as voters cast their ballots in a key Senate race pitting Republican J.D. Vance against Democratic Representative Tim Ryan. There was already a long line at a Cleveland voting center when election officials opened the doors at 6:30 am local (1130GMT). 

The Florida state department sent a letter to the US Department of Justice saying that federal election monitors won’t be permitted inside the state’s polling places. Florida’s state department said that the monitors “would be counterproductive and could potentially undermine confidence in the election”.

Officials in Virginia reported technical difficulties with equipment that verifies voter information. Some problems were also reported in Texas where the staff handling the proceedings said they were having problems with check-in machines.

The US House of Representatives, the lower house of the parliament, has 435 seats in total. Currently, Democratic Party holds a narrow lead with 220 seats to Republicans' 212. Three seats are currently vacant.

US Senate, the upper house, has 100 seats in all. Currently, Democrats and Republicans have 50 seats each. Democratic Party holds a wafer-thin majority with Vice-President Kamala Harris holding the casting vote in case of a tie.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky urges the United States to remain united, as questions hover over American support for his country following midterm elections to determine control of the US Congress. "I call on you to maintain unwavering unity, as it is now, until that very day when we all hear those important words, we have been dreaming of ... Until we hear that peace has finally been restored. Democracies must not stop on their way to the victory," he said in a recorded address, receiving the US Liberty Medal.
 

Voting has officially started in the US midterm elections with several states experiencing decent turnouts till now. One of the major factors which will decide the outcome of the elections are the 8.3 million young Americans who will cast their ballots. While polls have shown a strong Democratic tilt in the age group, a low turnout has work in the favour of the Republicans.
