Global views about China have remained broadly negative and confidence in its leader Xi Jinping near historic lows as per a&nbsp;survey of 17 advanced economies released on Wednesday.

Meanwhile,&nbsp;the image of the United States has rebounded since President Joe Biden replaced Donald Trump.

The survey by the US-based Pew Research Center found China scored higher marks for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic than the United States, however, while ratings on this for both had improved substantially since last year.

Last year, Pew found few had confidence that either Xi or Trump would "do the right thing" in world affairs, although in Western Europe more had confidence in the Chinese leader.

This year, confidence in Xi remained at or near historic lows, while "in contrast, views of Biden are much more positive than they were of Trump." The summary said that in all places, "a majority say they have confidence in Biden to do what is right in world affairs."

"Views of Xi continue to be widely negative," it said. "In all but one of the 17 publics surveyed, majorities say they have little or no confidence in him."

In Australia, France, Sweden and Canada, half or more said they had no confidence in Xi at all, it said.

The economies surveyed were Australia, Belgium, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and the United States.

Pew found that with the exception of Singapore and New Zealand, more than half of those surveyed in each place said it was more important to have strong economic ties with the United States than with China.

In many advanced economies though, assessments of China's handling of the pandemic had "improved precipitously" and a median of 49% said it had done a good job, compared with 37% who rated the U.S. response positively.

Europeans approved of China's response much more than those in the Asia-Pacific, while in both regions, few thought China respected the personal freedoms of its people, the survey found.

Across the Asia-Pacific, however, opinions were mixed as to whether it was more important to try to promote human rights in China, even if this harmed economic ties, or whether economic relations should be prioritized.

Majorities in New Zealand, Australia, and Japan and a plurality in Taiwan prioritized human rights, while majorities in South Korea and Singapore prioritized economic relations.

In the Asia-Pacific, majorities in all but Singapore said they had little or no confidence in Xi's handling of world affairs, with the most - 86 percent - expressing that view in Japan. In Singapore, 70 percent expressed confidence in Xi.

Pew said the non-US&nbsp;data came from 16,254 adults polled between March 12 and May 26. That from the United States came from 2,596 adults surveyed from February&nbsp;1-7.

Chinese police have detained eight suspects over a gas blast that killed 25 people and reduced several buildings to rubble in the central city of Shiyan, authorities said Friday.

Over a hundred people were injured in the explosion, which struck a busy two-storey building packed with shoppers and people eating breakfast in the Hubei province city on Sunday morning.&nbsp;

Eight suspects, including the general manager of the company that owned the gas pipe, have been detained, according to the Shiyan government.

Authorities found that "the company's safety management system was unsound" and "there were serious defects in the operation of relevant equipment," the government's statement said.

The blast occurred in a building that had previously housed a vehicle frame manufacturer, and several survivors told local media that the gas pipeline had fallen into disrepair after the factory was moved last year.

Around 900 residents in surrounding buildings were evacuated following the blast, which littered the area with debris and saw rescuers carrying shocked survivors out on stretchers.

Industrial accidents are common in&nbsp;China&nbsp;due to weak safety standards and corruption among officials tasked with enforcing them.

Sunday's blast prompted a rare statement from Chinese President Xi Jinping urging local officials to "learn profound lessons from the incident".

Shiyan's government said its investigation was still in progress and that "the relevant organizations and individuals would be held accountable."

China's foreign ministry said: "Tibet`s economy and society has made great achievements under the care of China's central government and the strong support of every Chinese person. 
 
"The right to religious freedom of all ethnic groups in Tibet are protected by the Constitution and the law." 
 
During the visit, government officials suggested that such images, along with small Chinese flags that lined many city streets, were a sign of the "patriotic feeling" in Tibet. 
 
Beijing says it "peacefully liberated" Tibet in 1951, after Chinese troops entered the then-country and took over its administration. 
 
The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule, and has since established a government in exile based in Dharamsala, India. 
 
Beijing has labeled him a dangerous separatist and has said when he passes away the government will select its own successor. 
 
Reuters did not see any images of the Dalai Lama, previously common in homes throughout Tibet, on the trip from May 31 to June 5. 
 
Photos of the spiritual leader are now strictly banned, according to rights groups and Tibetans who have since left the region. 
 
The foreign ministry repeated China`s position that the Dalai Lama was "attempting to separate Tibet from China." 
 
"Since Dalai defected, he has not done anything good for the Tibetan people," said Fan Chunwen, the secretary for Tibet’s Department of Education. 
 
In Tibet's College of Buddhism, a major religious training school on the outskirts of Lhasa, Chinese flags flew atop temples and images of Xi featured prominently in every dorm and classroom visited by Reuters. 
 
"We are under the leadership of the Communist Party now, of course, we must learn about politics," said Kelsang Wandui, vice director of the college. 
 
Around 40% of the school's study programme was dedicated to political and cultural education, Wandui said, adding the monks will celebrate the upcoming 100th anniversary of the Communist Party on July 1. 
 
The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), the name of the exiled Tibetan government which oversees up to 150,000 Tibetans in exile, said the "political re-education campaign has been reinvigorated to Sinicize Tibet." 
 
Beijing has consistently strongly denied any accusations of rights abuses in Tibet, and says people in China are free to practice approved religions, including Buddhism. 
 
In a Lhasa high school political ideology class visited by Reuters, a teacher preached the benefits of China`s policy in Tibet and led them in chants of agreement. 
 
"Our young people must cherish the party, listen to the party and be guided by the party and be loyal to our beautiful new Tibet," said Wang Zhen, Director of the Department of Education in Tibet.

After years of China`s growing aggressiveness towards other countries through warnings and insults, President Xi Jinping said that officials should create a lovable and respectable image of the country, which has raised more than a few sceptical eyebrows among China watchers.

In his remarks at a Politburo meeting on Monday as quoted by Xinhua news agency, Xi said: "We must pay attention to grasp the tone, be both open, confident and humble, and strive to create a credible, lovable, and respectable image of China."

In a Pew Research Center survey of 14 countries released in October, a majority of respondents gave a negative appraisal of China. Negative views reached decade highs in nine of those countries. Moreover, calls for countries to boycott the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics show no sign of dissipating over severe human rights abuses in Xinjiang and China`s vaccine diplomacy efforts have been complicated by reports of low efficacy and new COVID-19 waves.

According to Tufts University`s Sulmaan Wasif Khan, the wolf warriors had disrupted China`s "grand strategy" and posed a real domestic risk, reported Washington Post.

"The real danger is that once the toxin has spread through the system, there is no knowing where it will end," he said.

Last month, research from Yaoyao Dai and Luwei Rose Luqiu published by Washington Post`s The Monkey Cage last month found that an average of 10 per cent of Foreign Ministry speeches were "combative and hostile" before 2012. That increased to more than a quarter in 2019 and 2020.

When US President Joe Biden`s officials first met with their Chinese counterparts this March, they received a 16-minute tirade criticising America and accusing US officials of speaking from a position of hypocrisy and weakness.

During the COVID-19 outbreak, Zhao spread baseless theories that the US military could have been behind the coronavirus pandemic that first emerged in Wuhan, China -- a notion so bold that some other Chinese diplomats seemed to distance themselves from it, writes Taylor.

However, increasing international pressure on the origins of COVID-19 has highlighted that China has something to hide. Earlier, Sun Weidong, Chinese ambassador to India, said on Thursday that Beijing has provided India will over 5,000 ventilators and 21,569 oxygen generators, among other supplies.&nbsp;

"Since this April, #China has supplied more than 5000 ventilators, 21569 oxygen generators, over 21.48 million masks &amp; around 3800 tons of medicines to #India, according to statistics of the General Administration of Customs of China," the envoy wrote on a tweet.&nbsp;

China on Thursday warned the United States for "forcing other countries" to accept its democratic ideals after US President Joe Biden's speech in which he criticised "autocrats".&nbsp;

He added that the frequency of reconnaissance aircraft activity in the territory has also spiked by 40 per cent, adding that Beijing &nbsp;"resolutely opposes this".

"The US frequently sends warships and planes to carry out activities in maritime waters and airspace near China, advancing regional militarisation and threatening regional peace and stability," the defence spokesperson said.

To understand him, we must look at his country's history. The last 100 years were a red century for China dominated by communism. The vehicle of this domination was the Chinese Communist Party. Many leaders have come and gone but the party remains.

In a couple of months the CCP will celebrate its centenary - 100 years of the party’s founding. A lot has changed in these 100 years - Socialism has taken a back seat, equality has become an inconvenience. The party of peasants and guerillas is seeking global domination and they are not taking any prisoners.

Mao Zedong used to talk about seeking truth from facts. Today, his country specialises in propaganda and falsehoods.

How did this happen?

China is an image of its leader, and Chinese communism is personality-driven. The leader decides which way the party and the country go. Three chapters of Chinese communism are testimony to this.

First was the era of Mao Zedong, an insecure and ruthless leader who presided over deadly famines and a violent cultural revolution.Then came Deng Xiaoping and the era of reforms. China began adopting technocracy, embracing modernity which ended with the presidency of Hu Jintao. And then came Xi Jinping, who is leading China on a war path. This chapter of Chinese communism is still unfolding and he's already decided on the climax.

The politburo is now a secretive cabal of which state companies have become party assets. The People's Liberation Army has been reduced to mercenaries. Xi Jinping is intent on creating a new world order.

China is hijacking world organisations and reshaping them. Chinese nationals head four of the 15 UN agencies. They have left the World Trade Organization and the World Health Organization toothless.

So here's what a Beijing-led world will look like - Freedom and liberty will be state-regulated, the internet will be heavily censored, and democracy will be reduced to a theory. In addition, we can say goodbye to a rules-based order. This is China's mega-plan and step one is to test the waters. The South China Sea, where hundreds of Chinese vessels are still sailing in disputed waters is Beijing's dress rehearsal.

The Philippines has asked China to pull back but China says they are fishing vessels. President Duterte says he is prepared to deploy his navy to assert claims over disputed islands. Duterte said this on Monday - “I’m not so much interested now in fishing. I don't think there is enough fish really to quarrel about”. Turns out, there is no fish.

How can the world tackle this?

Democracies must close ranks. We saw a sample of this last week in Washington when Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga met US President Joe Biden.

Why China's Xi Jinping suddenly wants 'justice, not hegemony' in the world order

China's President Xi Jinping will attend a virtual climate summit this week hosted by US President Joe Biden, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Wednesday, as political tensions&nbsp;between the two countries remain high.&nbsp;

Xi will give an "important speech" at the meeting, the statement said, which comes days after climate envoys from the two countries met in Shanghai and pledged to cooperate on the pressing issue of climate change.

Biden&nbsp;has invited 40 world leaders to the&nbsp;climate&nbsp;summit, part of his effort to make the fight against global warming a top priority.

Beijing and Washington have persistently clashed over a range of issues from alleged human rights abuses to China's economic clout over other nations.

In Alaska last month, US&nbsp;and Chinese officials held the first high-level in-person talks that bristled with rancor and yielded no diplomatic breakthroughs.

But the two countries, the world's two biggest greenhouse gas emitters, have rediscovered a common interest in battling climate change.

Last week, US&nbsp;climate envoy John Kerry travelled to Shanghai to meet with his Chinese counterpart in the first high-level visit to China by a Biden administration official. Both agreed on concrete actions "in the 2020s" to reduce emissions.

The talks also marked a resumption of climate dialogue halted during the Donald Trump administration, who withdrew from the Paris agreement.

It comes after Human Rights Watch said in a detailed report released Monday that&nbsp;China is guilty of ongoing "crimes against humanity" in its oppressive treatment of Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities.

China, under growing global pressure over its coronavirus response and treatment of minority Muslim Uighurs in far west Xinjiang, is mounting an unprecedented and aggressive campaign to push back.

Beijing has imprisoned more than one million members of the main ethnic group in its western Xinjiang region and keeps millions more under a tough system of surveillance and controls, said the report by HRW and Stanford Law School’s Human Rights &amp; Conflict Resolution Clinic. &nbsp;

"The Chinese government has committed, and continues to commit, crimes against humanity against the Turkic Muslim population," the report said.

"The Chinese government's apparent goal in creating the camps is the erasure of Turkic Muslim culture and religion," it said, specifying Uyghurs, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, and other groups in Xinjiang.

The ongoing policies violate the 1998&nbsp;Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, which says widespread or systematic attacks on a civilian population are a crime, the report said.

It faulted the Chinese government for illegal imprisonment, torture and murder of Uyghurs, and of intentional policies of forced labor and sexual violence toward them.

HRW said Beijing's mistreatment of Uyghurs dates back more than two decades, but said that they have intensified since 2013 under Chinese President Xi&nbsp;Jinping.

Driven by nationalism and Islamophobia, Xi's government wants to "Sinicize" the Muslim communities, the report said.

HRW and the Stanford researchers did not go so far as to accuse Beijing of genocide in Xinjiang, an accusation that has been made by the US government, legislatures in Belgium, Canada and Netherlands, and other rights groups.

HRW said it hadn't documented evidence of "genocidal intent" by Beijing, but also said its report does not preclude such a finding.

"If such evidence were to emerge, the acts being committed against Turkic Muslims in Xinjiang, a group protected by the 1948 Genocide Convention,&nbsp;could also support a finding of genocide."

HRW called for governments to work together to pressure China to change its policies and to help identify the perpetrators.

It also called for the United Nations to set up a commission of inquiry to investigate allegations.

Under international law, crimes against humanity are defined as widespread and systematic, whereas the burden of proof for genocide - the intent to destroy part of a population - can be more difficult to prove.

The two sides clashed in Alaska over accusations about China's policies in Hong Kong and its treatment of Uyghurs in its northwestern Xinjiang region, criticisms China rejects as interference in its domestic affairs.

Biden has made reversing the climate-sceptic policy of his predecessor Donald Trump a priority.

He has rejoined the 2015 Paris accord, and is hosting a virtual summit of world leaders next week which the US hopes will result in stronger climate pledges.

Chinese leader Xi is yet to confirm if he will attend the summit.

The US consulate said Kerry arrived in China and would meet Chinese counterparts at a Shanghai hotel in a day of closed-door talks.

Officials are expected to discuss environmental challenges, areas which both China and the US say are top priorities, as well as the upcoming UN-led climate talks to be held in Glasgow at the end of the year.

"At this point understanding each others' expectations and ambition levels, and agreeing how to use those commitments to move the&nbsp;international climate negotiations forward would already be an important&nbsp;first step," Lauri Myllyvirta, lead analyst at the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, told AFP.

China, the world's biggest polluter, announced an ambitious target to be carbon-neutral by 2060, but analysts have warned high reliance on coal and modest short-term targets could scupper the ambition.

As Trump turned away from the national climate agenda, Xi made bold promises to cut emissions.

China "now shouldered the responsibility of global climate governance" and won't be part of a US-centred climate campaign, the nationalistic Global Times cited experts saying Thursday.

Biden has yet to announce any new targets under the Paris agreement.&nbsp;

"Both countries have a long way to go to firm up their targets and commitments for this decade," said Myllyvirta.

No global solution on climate change is likely without both the US and China on board, since the world's top two economies together account for nearly half of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions.

Li Shuo from Greenpeace China said he hoped the talks might yield agreements on China's huge use of polluting coal.

They've made tall sacrifices, but China was busy plotting its rise.

It was making plans to utilise this pandemic for political and economic gains.

As countries shut their borders, China opened its purse strings.

Foreign companies were struggling to break even in 2020, so China swooped in and acquired these assets.

That too at dirt-cheap rates. The list includes 112 mergers and acquisitions in North America, 142 in Europe, 220 in Asia, and 30 in Oceania.&nbsp;

If you notice, these are places where Chinese strategic interests are challenged by the US, Canada, Australia, and India.

In 2020, China's overall foreign investment was 132.9 billion dollars, that too in the pandemic year.&nbsp;

The total value of its mergers and acquisitions was 46.4 billion dollars.

Countries were slow to realise what was happening and when they did, FDI laws were tightened.

The US, the European Union, Australia and India, all blocked China's predatory investments.

Strategic assets had to be protected, but for some companies, it was too late.

Beijing also scored a few trade deals in 2020.

Phase one of its agreement with the US was finalised.

But the crowning achievement was the EU investment deal.

They haggled for seven years without any progress.

Then suddenly in December 2020, a deal was announced.

In exchange for some vague promises, Chinese companies gained access to the European markets.

And of course, there was nothing concrete on human rights violations.

China's pandemic strategy was crude and hinged on one thing to ensure it wouldn't be blamed for the pandemic.

It launched a massive disinformation campaign, in which Chinese diplomats blamed the US military and Europe for the crisis.

Part two of this strategy was to sabotage the WHO probe.

The entire world knows the virus originated in Wuhan, but the WHO probe team couldn't find evidence.

They were denied access to bat caves, tailed by Chinese spies and arm-twisted into granting them a clean chit.

<h2>2. The imminent threat of China's regional expansionism</h2>

China used the pandemic to implement a new security law in Hong Kong that has effectively killed the promise of "one country, two systems".

In the South China Sea, Beijing has made piracy a maritime policy. It regularly intimidates foreign vessels, carries out military drills near disputed islands, and sends fighter jets into Taiwanese territory.

The top US military commander in the Indo-Pacific has made a grim prediction.

He feels China could invade Taiwan in the next six years.&nbsp;

This was always Beijing's plan, but the hourglass is a lot shorter than many expected.

China wants to dominate the world.

The Indo-Pacific is only the dress rehearsal.

Some may ask, what's the issue here?

America has dominated the world for decades and India, Britain, Brazil, and Australia have global ambitions.

In the end, expansionism always fails, but not before claiming thousands of lives and dismantling dozens of cultures.

Countries were slow to realise what was happening and when they did, FDI laws were tightened. The US, the European Union, Australia and India, all blocked China's predatory investments. Strategic assets had to be protected, but for some companies, it was too late. Beijing also scored a few trade deals in 2020. Phase one of its agreement with the US was finalised. But the crowning achievement was the EU investment deal. They haggled for seven years without any progress. Then suddenly in December 2020, a deal was announced. In exchange for some vague promises, Chinese companies gained access to the European markets. And of course, there was nothing concrete on human rights violations. China's pandemic strategy was crude and hinged on one thing to ensure it wouldn't be blamed for the pandemic. It launched a massive disinformation campaign, in which Chinese diplomats blamed the US military and Europe for the crisis. Part two of this strategy was to sabotage the WHO probe. The entire world knows the virus originated in Wuhan, but the WHO probe team couldn't find evidence. They were denied access to bat caves, tailed by Chinese spies and arm-twisted into granting them a clean chit. 2. The imminent threat of China's regional expansionism China used the pandemic to implement a new security law in Hong Kong that has effectively killed the promise of "one country, two systems". In the South China Sea, Beijing has made piracy a maritime policy. It regularly intimidates foreign vessels, carries out military drills near disputed islands, and sends fighter jets into Taiwanese territory. The top US military commander in the Indo-Pacific has made a grim prediction. He feels China could invade Taiwan in the next six years. This was always Beijing's plan, but the hourglass is a lot shorter than many expected. 3. The horrors of a China-led global system China wants to dominate the world. The Indo-Pacific is only the dress rehearsal. Some may ask, what's the issue here? America has dominated the world for decades and India, Britain, Brazil, and Australia have global ambitions. The difference, however, is that the China-led world order is the end of democracy. It will be the end of human rights and free thought. Leadership shapes politics and Chinese leadership would vitiate global politics. In the end, expansionism always fails, but not before claiming thousands of lives and dismantling dozens of cultures. So the question is - how long will the world wait this time?
