A study conducted by Harvard researchers has found out the types of jobs which tend to be the unhappiest. The answer is, the ones that require little human interaction, reported CNBC. The study which began in 1938, has gathered health records from hundreds of participants across the world.

The 85-year old research looked at some 700 participants from all over the world and asked detailed questions about their lives every two years. The study found that jobs which require little human interaction and do not offer opportunities to build meaningful relationships with co-workers tend to have some of the most miserable employees, the study found.

“It’s a critical social need that should be met in all aspects of our lives,” Robert Waldinger, MD and a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School told CNBC. He added, “Plus, if you are more connected to people, you feel more satisfied with your job, and do better work.”

Waldinger who was also the director of one of the longest-running studies on happiness called Harvard Study of Adult Development also noted that some roles cannot reliably be correlated with dissatisfaction and burnout as certain job characteristics can be, reported CNBC.

Some of the most isolating jobs involve independent work like truck driving or night security. Additionally, more and more lonely jobs are emerging particularly in tech-driven industries like packaging or food delivery services where people have no co-workers at all, said the report, citing the Harvard professor.

Notably, loneliness is not limited to those involved in independent work as the study found that even people with busy, social jobs can feel isolated if they don’t have positive, meaningful interactions with their co-workers, said the CNBC report. Researchers also found that creating small opportunities for social interaction can be good for one’s health and help alleviate feelings of loneliness and dissatisfaction.

According to new research by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), there has been an uptick in the number of complaints about politically biased treatment in the workplace.

The number has doubled since before the pandemic, with about a quarter of US employees saying that they have experienced this biased treatment because of their political affiliations, says the report.

According to the report, the kind of treatment that the employees have mentioned is either preferential dealings or undue negative actions on the basis of their political opinions. In 2019, this number was at 12% and this time around at least a quarter of US employees say they have experienced this type of bias. Researchers collected data from over 500 American employees.

The report also shows that at least 30% of managers said that they would be hesitant to hire someone who has disclosed extremely conservative beliefs, on the other hand, at least 20% said the same for a person who held extremely liberal beliefs.

SHRM president and chief executive officer, Johnny Taylor Jr. said in the report, “In today’s climate, people are saying, ‘I can’t work with you if you don’t share my views…It’s a problem HR professionals and business leaders cannot ignore.”

Japan has plans to bring the pay disparity between men and women to light. In order to address gender disparities in the workplace, the country intends to make it necessary for large corporations to reveal wage disparities between men and women. This measure is part of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's 'new capitalism' action plan. Companies will be compelled to reveal women's pay as a percentage of men's compensation on their website or elsewhere, according to a report by Euronews.next. They'd also have to break down the numbers by permanent and non-permanent personnel, as well as to justify any salary disparities.

It will apply to enterprises with more than 300 employees, both public and private. According to a report by Nikkei Asia, the new law will affect roughly 18,000 enterprises.

The country's law already mandates that both men and women be paid equally for equal work.

Women's earnings in Japan, however, are only about 78 per cent of men's in comparison to the 88 per cent of other OECD countries.

Amazon has settled with two of its most prominent internal critics, staving off a public hearing over accusations that the company illegally fired the pair, lawyers for the parties told an administrative judge on Wednesday.

The former employees, Emily Cunningham and Maren Costa, said in a statement that Amazon would be required to pay their back wages and “post a notice to all of its tech and warehouse workers nationwide that Amazon can’t fire workers for organizing and exercising their rights.” They called the settlement “a win for protecting workers rights.”

The pair have said they were fired last year because they publicly pushed the company to reduce its effect on climate change and address concerns about its warehouse workers. Amazon has maintained that the former employees repeatedly broke internal policies.

An Amazon spokesperson, Jose Negrete, said Wednesday, “We have reached a mutual agreement that resolves the legal issues in this case and welcome the resolution of this matter.”

The settlement was reached at a high-wire moment for Amazon, which has pledged to be “Earth’s best employer” and is looking, in a tight labor market, to hire 40,000 corporate and tech workers and 125,000 warehouse workers in the United States.

In 2018, Costa and Cunningham, who worked as designers at Amazon’s Seattle headquarters, were part of a small group of employees who publicly pushed the company to do more to address its climate impact. They turned their efforts into an organization, Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, and helped get more than 8,700 Amazon colleagues to support its efforts.

Over time, Cunningham and Costa broadened their protests. After Amazon told them that they had violated its external-communications policy by speaking publicly about the business, their group organized 400 employees to also speak out, purposely violating the policy to make a point.

At the start of the pandemic, they announced an internal event for warehouse workers to speak to tech employees about their workplace safety conditions. Soon after, Amazon fired both women. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., wrote Amazon expressing concerns over potential retaliation, and Tim Bray, an internet pioneer and a former vice president at Amazon’s cloud computing group, resigned in protest.

This spring, lawyers with the National Labor Relations Board said they had found merit in Costa and Cunningham’s accusations that they were fired in retaliation for their organizing. The agency’s Seattle office then brought a case against Amazon, saying the company “enforced its facially neutral External Communications and Solicitation policies selectively and disparately in order to restrict employees from engaging in protected, concerted activities.”

The hearing was scheduled to start Tuesday morning, but was delayed as the parties worked on a settlement.

The case is one of many tangles the company has had with the labor board since the start of the pandemic. Most visibly, in August, a hearing officer of the NLRB recommended that the agency throw out a union election at an Amazon warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama, finding that Amazon’s “conduct interfered with the laboratory conditions necessary to conduct a fair election.” Amazon denies any interference and has vowed to appeal if the regional office of the labor board agrees with the recommendation and formally overturns the election, which rejected the union.

Two women were harassed every day at their workplaces in India in 2017.

News reports said Sunday that the National Commission for Women (NCW) received an average of 1.7 complaints a day in 2017.

The reports said that in the 316 days between January 1 and December 12, the commission received 539 complaints.

Sixty per cent of the complaints came from five states -- Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana.

Uttar Pradesh led with 26% of the complaints, followed by Dehi (13%), Maharashtra (7.42%), Madhya Pradesh (7.05%), and Haryana (6.86%).

The reports said that data for the previous four years starting from 2014 threw up similar figures with the NCW receiving 1.8 complaints a day on average.

In those four years, 1,971 complaints were received by the commission.

The figures however are official, with experts believing the unofficial figures would be much higher.

Complaints of harassment are first expected to be addressed by internal complaints committees, in the case of the organised sector, or district complaints committees, in the case of the unorganised sector.

The complainant can then approach the state women's commission or the national women's commission for redress.

But a number of women do not complain because the committees either do not exist or are thought to be ineffective.

An August 2015 report, again by the NCW, said that 69 per cent of women who face sexual harassment at the workplace do not report it.
