Rafael Nadal defeated 23-year-old Casper Ruud in straight sets to win the 2022 French Open title on Sunday (June 05). Throughtout the just-concluded tournament in Paris, the 36-year-old Nadal was ailing with an injury, however, he still managed to beat World number one and defending champion Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals before extending his dominance at the Roland Garros with a sublime win in the final.

Nadal beat Ruud 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 to claim his 22nd Grand Slam title, most by any in men's singles and opened up on his future. While a lot has been said and written about this year's French Open being Nadal's last, the veteran said that he 'will keep fighting' to carry on and then opined on his participation in the forthcoming Wimbledon 2022.

Nadal opened up about participating at the Wimbledon and said after the finale, "I am going to be in Wimbledon if my body is ready to be in Wimbledon. Wimbledon is not a tournament that I want to miss."

"Wimbledon is a priority, always has been a priority. If I'm able to play with anti-inflammatories yes. To play with anaesthetic injections, I do not want to put myself in that position again. It can happen once but no it's not the philosophy of life I want to follow. Let's see. I am always a positive guy and always expect the things are going the right way. Let's be confident, let's be positive and let's see what's going on," Nadal added.

Many big names have already pulled out of the upcoming Wimbledon in London. While Nadal hasn't given a sureshot answer with regard to his participation, many of his loyalists across the globe would hope for him to return on court and claim his 3rd title at the Wimbledon, after 12 years.

'Wimbledon is not a tournament...': Rafael Nadal opines on future after winning 14th French Open title

Serena Williams will begin her Wimbledon comeback by facing Harmony Tan, a 24-year-old from France who is ranked 113th and owns a 2-6 career record in Grand Slam matches. The placement of Williams in the women's bracket was the most anticipated aspect of Friday's draw at the All England Club. She is making her first appearance in singles at any tournament since she hurt her right leg and stopped playing during the first set of her first-round match at Centre Court a year ago.

Because of her lack of activity over the past 12 months, Williams who has been No. 1 in the rankings is outside the WTA's top 1,200 this week and so could have ended up anywhere in the field and against any opponent in the first round. She only returned to the tour this week by playing two doubles matches at a tuneup event in England.

While the 40-year-old American's track record would merit a seeding, the All England Club now adheres strictly to the rankings in determining how it seeds players. Williams has won seven Wimbledon championships, part of her total of 23 Grand Slam singles titles, a record for the professional era. Tan, meanwhile, will be making her debut at the grass-court tournament.

If Williams gets past Tan, next up could be a match against Sara Sorribes Tormo, who is seeded 32nd but has never been past the second round at the All England Club or the third round at any major in 19 past appearances. The third round potentially would put Williams against a tougher test: No. 6-seeded Karolina Pliskova, who was the runner-up to Ash Barty last year at Wimbledon and also reached the final of the 2016 U.S. Open beating Williams in the semifinals there.

Barty retired at age 25 in March and so is not defending her title when play begins on Monday. That also leaves open the question of which woman will have the honor of playing the first match at Centre Court on Tuesday, a slot traditionally reserved for the prior year's champion. The two most likely choices would seem to be No. 1 Iga Swiatek, who enters on a 35-match winning streak and is coming off a title at the French Open, or Simona Halep, who won the 2019 trophy at Wimbledon, beating Williams in the final, but did not get the chance to begin things at Centre Court in 2020, when the tournament was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, or in 2021, because she was injured and unable to play.

Serena Williams to kick off Wimbledon 2022 against 113th-ranked Harmony Tan

Wimbledon is set to kick off without Roger Federer for the first time in over two decades next week and with the clock ticking down on the Swiss maestro`s career John McEnroe said he was grateful for being able to watch him play the sport for so long. Federer, who turns 41 in August, has undergone three knee operations in the last two years and has not played a competitive match since his quarter-final defeat to Hubert Hurkacz at last year's grasscourt Grand Slam.

He won the Wimbledon junior title in 1998 before turning professional the same year. Since making his debut at the grasscourt Grand Slam in 1999 Federer had not missed a single edition before the 2022 tournament. "Twenty years, you got to look at the bright side," seven-times major winner and ESPN analyst McEnroe told reporters.

"You had a lot of time where you got a chance to watch this guy play and win it numerous times. So, we have to sort of hope that whatever he decides he`s happy with. He`s 40. He`s made it this far. It`s amazing."
Federer, who has won a record eight men`s titles at the All England Club, said this month that he is "definitely" intending to return to top-level tennis in 2023.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner is expected to return to the tour in September when he teams up with Spaniard Rafa Nadal to play doubles at the Laver Cup in London before playing at the Swiss indoors tournament at home in Basel the following month.

"Roger Federer is a living legend. We all know that," McEnroe added during a video conference call on Wednesday. "He`s the epitome of what you would want your kid to be when they grew up. And he`s the most beautiful player I`ve ever watched play. I idolized (Rod) Laver. He`s kind of an updated Laver to me."

Wild cards Ons Jabeur and Serena Williams have pulled out of their Eastbourne International doubles semifinal against Aleksandra Krunic and Magda Linette due to Jabeur`s right knee injury. Krunic and Linette will contest their first WTA double final as a team. It will be Krunic`s 10th doubles final overall, and Linette`s fifth. Krunic already owns five WTA doubles titles, while Linette won her first in Charleston this year alongside Andreja Klepac. Jabeur and Williams had thrilled the crowd with two victories in their first event together, saving a match point in the first round against Marie Bouzkova and Sara Sorribes Tormo before dispatching Shuko Aoyama and Chan Hao-Ching in straight sets.

Jabeur had captured her third WTA Tour title in Berlin the previous week and will go into Wimbledon as the No.3 seed next week. Williams was playing her first tournament since retiring in the first round of Wimbledon last year. The 23-time Grand Slam champion has received a wild card into this year`s Championships and will make her singles return there. On her return, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion and 14-time Grand Slam doubles champion Williams kept her return to the WTA Tour rolling, as she and Ons Jabeur earned a 6-2, 6-4 quarterfinal win over Shuko Aoyama and Chan Hao-ching.

Serena Williams' campaign comes to an end at Eastbourne following doubles partner Ons Jabeur's injury

Serena Williams returned to tennis after a year away with a doubles win at the Eastbourne International on Tuesday and while the American great reaffirmed her love for the game she said her future on the circuit remains uncertain. The 23-time major champion had not played competitive tennis since limping out of her first-round match at last year`s Wimbledon in tears due to a leg injury, and the 40-year-old said there were times when she doubted she would ever compete again.

However, Williams, who has won seven Wimbledon singles titles, took a wildcard for the grasscourt major and kicked off her preparations with a doubles win with Tunisian Ons Jabeur. "You know what, I`m literally taking it one day at a time," Williams told reporters about her plans, saying she "absolutely" had moments of doubt about returning to the Tour. "I really took my time with my hamstring injury so I`m just not making a ton of decisions after this."

Williams won the last of her 23 Grand Slam titles at 2017 Australian Open and remains one shy of equalling Margaret Court`s record for the most major titles. She reached the final at four majors since returning to the Tour after giving birth to daughter Olympia in 2017 but lost in straight sets on each occasion.
Speculation about retirement gathered pace when Williams, who has slipped down the rankings to number 1,204, released her long-time coach Patrick Mouratoglou in April to train Romania`s Simona Halep.

Asked if she saw herself playing into the next year, Williams said: "I don`t know, I can`t answer that. "But I love tennis and I love playing, or else I wouldn`t be out here, right? But I also love what I do off the court, what I`ve built with Serena Ventures, it`s interesting." The Wimbledon main draw kicks off on Monday.
