The Saudi government is lifting a ban on calls made through online apps on Thursday but will monitor and censor them, a government spokesman said.

All online voice and video call services - such as Microsoft's Skype, Facebook's WhatsApp and Messenger, and Rakuten's Viber - that satisfy regulatory requirements were set to become accessible overnight.

However, on Thursday morning, Viber appeared to remain blocked inside the kingdom, and WhatsApp worked only when connected to a wireless network.

Adel Abu Hameed, spokesman for telecoms regulator CITC, said on Arabiya TV on Wednesday that new regulations were aimed mainly at protecting users' personal information and blocking content that violated the kingdom's laws.

Asked if the apps could be monitored by the authorities or companies, he said: "Under no circumstances can the user use an application for video or voice calling without monitoring and censorship by the Communications and Information Technology Commission, whether the application is global or local."

It was unclear how the authorities can monitor apps such as WhatsApp, which says its messages are supported by end-to-end encryption, meaning the company cannot read customers' messages even if approached by law enforcement agencies.

Saudi Arabia, which introduced blocks to internet communications from 2013, has along with its Gulf Arab neighbours been wary that such services could be used by activists and militants.

Gulf Arab states, except the island kingdom of Bahrain, were mostly spared the "Arab Spring" mass protests often organised over the Internet that roiled much of the region in 2011.

Lifting the ban represents part of the Saudi government's broad reforms to diversify the economy partly in response to low oil prices, which have hit the country’s finances.

Yet the policy reversal could squeeze Saudi Arabia's three main telecoms operators - SaudiTelecom Co (STC), Etihad Etisalat (Mobily) and Zain Saudi - which earn revenue from international phone calls made by the millions of expatriates living in the kingdom.

A Pakistani Christian man has been sentenced to death for blasphemy after he sent a Muslim friend a poem on WhatsApp that insulted Islam, a lawyer said Friday.

Nadeem James was charged in July last year after his Muslim friend Yasir Bashir complained to police that he received a poem on the messaging app that was derogatory toward the Prophet Mohammed and other holy figures.

"James was handed a death sentence by the court on Thursday on blasphemy charges," defence lawyer Anjum Wakeel told AFP.

"My client will appeal the sentence in the high court as he has been framed by his friend who was annoyed over James' affair with a Muslim girl," Wakeel said.

He said the trial was held inside a prison due to security reasons after local Muslim clerics had threatened James and his family.

Court officials confirmed the sentence.

Blasphemy is a hugely sensitive issue in conservative Muslim Pakistan, where even unproven allegations can stir beatings and mob violence.

In 2014 a Christian couple was lynched then burnt in a kiln in Punjab province after being falsely accused of desecrating the Koran.

Rights groups have said the laws are routinely abused to seek vengeance.

German police are developing a software that can hack into people's smartphones and read encrypted messages. The software is expected to come by the end of the year.

The German Bundestag had introduced a law in June giving full access of chat messages, video recordings, and other private data to the police. The law allowed police not only to intercept data from terrorist but anyone suspected of any criminal activity. The "state trojans" intercepted user communication before they were encrypted on the devices.

However, according to a leaked report, the German Federal Criminal Police had been working on developing a surveillance even before the law was passed.

Netzpolitik, a German Independent media outlet reported on the basis of a leaked report that the German police is working on a new version of Remote Communication Interception Software(RCIS). RCIS is used for introspecting electronic devices.

The new version of RCIS is designed to hack smartphones and tablets with Android, iOS and Blackberry operating systems. The existing version can only hack desktop computers.

The device can hack the messages directly from the source that is the user's screens. It is targeted at messaging services like Whatsapp or telegram making it a probable "surveillance" software in the hands of a government.

Activists and politicians have criticised the massive "state surveillance" calling it a threat to people's security.

Also, an activist of UK based NGO Privacy International, Erin Omanovic said that similar measures aimed at providing security services the right to hack into people’s electronic devices are being made not only in Germany but also in many other countries, Deutsche Welle reported.

"Some of these capabilities have already been practiced across Europe," Omanovic said.

"The UK, for example, has been engaged in hacking but just hasn't legalised it. There's a complete lack of safeguards and oversight over the use of this type of technology. And there have been some examples of misuse by governments around the world. For example, there's evidence that FinSpy was used to target human rights activists and lawyers in Bahrain," he added.

Contradicting itself, the government has told the Supreme Court that the privacy of personal data is integral to the right to life.

On Friday, additional solicitor general PS Narasimha told the court: "Personal data is an extension of an individual's personality. Data of a personality is integral to right to life guaranteed under Article 21."

The court was hearing a petition against WhatsApp sharing user data with its new parent company Facebook.

The stand though is contradictory to the one the government has taken in the Aadhar case.

Arguing a petition against Aadhar, attorney general KK Venugopal had told the court -- while referring to two earlier judgements by it -- that privacy is a common law right and that the petitioners therefore cannot complain about breach of privacy because of the collection of biometric data.

WhatsApp services face disruption in China

WhatsApp has enabled new changes to its app upgrading the widely used messaging platform. The new feature will allow users to share photos without compressing them. This will retain the original resolution of the picture unlike before. The users will also be able to view their pictures and videos in the in-app camera by just swiping up.

The feature will also update the text in the app turning them bold, italicise or strikethrough with a single tap and hold.

Indian instant messaging platform Hike rolled out an in-app electronic payments wallet on Tuesday in a bid to cash in on rising digital transactions, replicating similar services offered by its backer Tencent Holdings in China.

E-payments have surged in India since a shock ban of high-value bank notes in November last year. Providers such as Paytm, backed by Alibaba and SoftBank Group, have rapidly increased their share of the market amid predictions it will jump nearly 10 times to $500 billion by 2020.

Hike's wallet, however, is the first such service by a messaging platform in the country and comes ahead of a possible launch of a payment facility by Facebook-owned WhatsApp later this year.

Hike said its wallet will allow instant money transfer among its clients and enable fund transfer to banks using the government-backed United Payments Interface (UPI) system.

The startup has been looking at Tencent's WeChat services in China and finding ways to adapt them to India's digital payments market, said Hike Chief Executive Kavin Mittal.

"For sure we talk to Tencent quite often, we are inspired by them and it's great to have them as a partner," Mittal told Reuters in an interview.

Hike has partnered Indian private sector lender Yes Bank to facilitate money transfers to banks using the UPI system, Mittal said.

Besides mobile phone bill payments and traditional wallet-to-wallet transfers, Hike will also allow its users to send "blue packets" or envelopes containing digital money to friends, a feature borrowed from WeChat's "red packets".

Hike, part of India's Bharti Enterprises, says it has more than 100 million registered users.

It was launched in December 2012, and has raised over $260 million from investors including Tiger Global, Tencent and Bharti SoftBank - a joint venture between Japan's SoftBank and Bharti Enterprises.

Headed by Mittal's father, billionaire Sunil Mittal, Bharti Enterprises' businesses include top Indian mobile carrier Bharti Airtel and joint ventures in insurance and renewable.

Paytm is India's biggest electronic wallets provider with 225 million clients. Swedish communications app Truecaller, which has a large user base in India, also started a mobile payment service in the country this year based on the UPI platform.

WhatsApp users are advised to be a little wary of messages that they receive from unknown people. According to a report from Independent.co.uk, a new scam is doing the rounds and it is trying to charge users for using the instant messaging app by faking a subscription fee.

"People are being targeted by a message that reads: Your subscription has expired, and to verify your account and purchase a lifetime subscription for just 0.99 GBP simply tap on this link," says the report.

The instant messenger is free to download and use. While WhatsApp used to charge a subscription fee earlier, it no longer exists.

With this new scam, people are being tricked into providing their payment details. And therefore, we suggest you avoid any such message and avoid clicking on any suspicious link that reaches you as a WhatsApp message.

In fact, people are advised to immediately delete such a message and block the sender, so that they can no longer send you malicious messages.

The European Commission on Thursday fined US social media giant Facebook 110 million euros ($120 million) for providing incorrect and misleading information on its takeover of WhatsApp, imposing its biggest penalty linked to a merger.

"Today's decision sends a clear signal to companies that they must comply with all aspects of EU merger rules, including the obligation to provide correct information," EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in a statement.

"The Commission must be able to take decisions about mergers' effects on competition in full knowledge of accurate facts," Vestager said.

Facebook said in response that it cooperated with the Commission.

"We've acted in good faith since our very first interactions with the Commission and we've sought to provide accurate information at every turn," a Facebook spokesperson said.

"The errors we made in our 2014 filings were not intentional and the Commission has confirmed that they did not impact the outcome of the merger review. Today's announcement brings this matter to a close."

EU regulators cleared the then $19 billion Facebook acquisition of WhatsApp in late 2014, finding no reason to believe it would dampen competition in the burgeoning social media sector.

In its statement Thursday, the Commission recalled that the merger rules require companies to provide regulators with the accurate information essential to any review.

It noted that when Facebook notified the Commission of the acquisition in 2014, the company had said it would "be unable to establish reliable automated matching between Facebook users' accounts and WhatsApp users' accounts".

"However, in August 2016, WhatsApp announced updates to its terms of service and privacy policy, including the possibility of linking WhatsApp users' phone numbers with Facebook users' identities," it said.

After launching a probe last year, the Commission "found that, contrary to Facebook's statements in the 2014 merger review process, the technical possibility of automatically matching Facebook and WhatsApp users' identities already existed in 2014, and that Facebook staff were aware of such a possibility."

The Commission said Thursday's decision and the fine would have no impact on its October 2014 clearance of the deal.

Commission spokesman Ricardo Cardoso said the fine was less than it would have been because Facebook cooperated.

Cardoso added it was nonetheless the "highest fine ever" imposed by the commission for breaches linked to a merger and would serve as a deterrent to others.

(AFP)

Indians make 50 million minutes of video calls daily via WhatsApp, the highest compared to users in any other part of the globe.

WhatsApp, a popular messaging app that competes with the likes of Hike, Google's Allo and Viber in India, started offering video calling feature in November last year.

The video calling feature also pitched WhatsApp against popular video calling apps like Microsoft's Skype, Apple's FaceTime and Google Duo. Since then, it has seen a steady growth in usage. One of the driving factors has been falling data prices and free promotional data by new comer, Reliance Jio.

As per data shared by WhatsApp, India is the top country for video calling minutes with over 50 million video calling minutes per day. Globally, users make over 55 million video calls per day, spending more than 340 million minutes per day on these calls.

WhatsApp is also home to over 200 million monthly active users. This is the highest base for WhatsApp that has over a billion users globally. WhatsApp has been working on solutions to enable businesses to use its platform to connect with consumers and India, it says, will play a "crucial role" for the product.

While the Facebook-owned company has said it will not introduce third-party advertisements on its platform, it is testing tools that allow users to communicate with businesses and organisations like banks and airlines through its platform. WhatsApp has been working on introducing features to enhance engagement on the platform.

It had recently launched a story feature to allow users to express their thoughts using pictures and animations. WhatsApp is also attempting to foray into digital payment services, with India as a test bed. The company is looking to hire a digital transactions head for the country. In February, WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton had met IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad to discuss ways in which WhatsApp could contribute to India's vision for digital commerce.

Jammu and Kashmir government today banned 22 social networking sites and applications including Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter in Kashmir on the ground that these were being misused by anti-national and anti-social elements to fan trouble.

The ban will be in place for a month or till further orders, whichever is earlier, said an order issued by Principal Secretary (Home) R K Goyal.

"In the interest of maintenance of public order, the government hereby directs all internet service providers that any message or class of messages to or from a person or a class of persons relating to any subject or any pictorial content through the following social networking sites shall not be transmitted in Kashmir valley with immediate effect for a period of one month or till further orders, whichever is earlier," he said in the three-page order.

The sites and applications which will be inaccessible in the valley include Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, Wechat, QQ, Qzone, Google Plus, Skype, Line, Pinterest, Snapchat, Youtube, Vine and Flickr.

An earlier report said the government had suspended internet services in Kashmir for a month but this was not correct.

To ban the social networking sites and Apps, Goyal invoked the powers conferred on Government under Indian Telegraph Act 1885 read with Indian Telegraph (Amendment) Rules 2007 to ban these sites and applications.

"On careful examination of all relevant factors, it is observed that the use of social media platforms, which are being misused by anti-national and anti-social elements by transmitting inflammatory messages in various forms are immediately required to be regulated/curbed," the order reads.

It said, "the anti-national and inimical elements largely succeed in transmitting unverified, objectionable and inflammatory material and content through the medium of these social networking sites."

It was being "felt that continued misuse of social networking sites and instant messaging services is likely to be detrimental to the interests of peace and tranquility in the state," the order said.

"It was also observed during law and order disturbances of 2016 in the Kashmir valley that anti-national and subversive elements extensively misused social media sites and instant messaging services for vitiating peace and instigating violence, which caused large scale damage to life and property," it added.

The move comes against the backdrop of repeated student protests in Kashmir, which the authorities believe are fanned through social media.

Some days back, a police official had said that 350 WhatsApp groups were being used to spread rumours in Kashmir and the government had cracked down, shutting 90 per cent of these groups.

The mobile internet services were suspended in Kashmir on April 17, following widespread student protests in the valley against alleged highhandedness of security forces.

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature for iOS that lets users ask Siri to read out messages for them. Users can get their messages read by simply saying: "Hey Siri, read new WhatsApp messages."

The new WhatsApp feature is expected to make life a little easier for people with visual impairments. Also, it is seen as a significant contribution towards vehicle safety by keeping eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.

“Users can activate the feature in WhatsApp’s settings menu, and request that Siri read the latest message with the usual “Hey Siri” command. Replying by voice is possible, too, since WhatsApp added the option last September,” report The Verge.

It is available to users running iOS 10.3 on their devices.

This feature is seen as a result of Apple opening up Siri’s software to third-party developers at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2016.

The updated version of WhatsApp for iOS has also added support for the Persian language.

You may be sleeping, eating, enjoying, relaxing or, for that matter, living your life on WhatsApp, but chances are that you are still a little away from delving into the instant messenger. And if you disagree with us and believe that, by now, you have mastered each and everything about WhatsApp, we bring you 5 features to check out. Because we doubt that you already knew about them, but did you?

1. Number of people in WhatsApp group: You may be pretty active on WhatsApp and could be part of several WhatsApp groups - probably, with responsible admins of a lot of them, but there is one thing about these groups that we doubt you were aware of. And it's nothing but the number of participants that can be part of a WhatsApp group. As the company says, you can only add up to 256 people in a WhatsApp group - a limit that was set to 100 till last year.

2. File size limit: You may be exchanging a plethora of documents and other files with your contacts on WhatsApp, but did you know about the file size limit that the instant messenger has set for sending documents, contacts and other media? According to WhatsApp, users can’t send files more than 100MB in size.

3. Deactivation and deletion are different: Deactivating your WhatsApp account doesn’t mean that your friends or other contacts can’t send you messages, anymore. While your account is deactivated, your name still appears if your friends/contacts search for you. People on WhatsApp can still send you messages, which will remain in a pending state for up to 30 days. In other words, deactivation and deletion are two different things. So, when your account is deactivated, it is not completely deleted. Therefore, when you reactivate your account before it is deleted, you will receive pending messages on your phone and you will be part of all of your group chats.

4. A hidden clause: We all know that group chats (as well as individual chats) can be put to mute to avoid getting disturbed by notifications and constant stream of conversations happening there. But did you know about this limitation of the mute setting in groups? The mute setting can be overridden in groups if you are specifically mentioned there - except for if you have muted the sender in your individual chat too.

5. Everything has limits: If you are wondering why you can’t see who all have viewed your WhatsApp Status, while your other friends can, remember that it’s to do with a setting that you must have disabled a long time ago - Read Receipts. If you have disabled Read Receipts on your WhatsApp, you will not be able to keep a track of who all have checked your status updates on WhatsApp - a feature heavily influenced by Snapchat Stories.

5 WhatsApp features, we bet, you didn?t know about

Tech firms and social media players are coming under increasing pressure over extremists using their websites, applications and technology to communicate extremist content. This time it’s WhatsApp and its encryption technology that the British government is eyeing after the Westminster attack on Wednesday. This is because Khalid Masood, the 52-year-old Briton who killed four people in a rampage in Westminster before being shot dead, reportedly used WhatsApp moments before the assault.

Now the British government believes that its security services must have access to encrypted messaging applications such as WhatsApp, as it was found that the service was used by the man behind the parliament attack.

"You can't have a situation where you have terrorists talking to each other - where this terrorist sent a WhatsApp message - and it can't be accessed," said Amber Rudd home secretary of the United Kingdom.

"We need to make sure that organisations like WhatsApp - and there are plenty of others like that - don't provide a secret place for terrorists to communicate with each other,” she added.

While WhatsApp is working with British authorities investigating the Westminster attack, it is not specified whether it would change its policy on encrypted messaging.

But before we hear more from WhatsApp on the same, let’s understand what is end-to-end encryption and how it works.

End-to-end encryption

A lot of messaging apps such as Apple iMessage, WhatsApp, Messenger, Line, Signal, Viber, and Telegram come with an encryption technology, but the usage differs from app to app. The idea behind-end-to-end encryption is to prevent snooping on digital conversations. In other words, end-to-end encryption is vital to cyber security.

End-to-end encryption (say, in case of WhatsApp) secures your messages, photos, videos, voice messages, documents, status updates and calls and prevents them from falling into wrong hands.

Facebook Messenger uses the same encryption technology as WhatsApp. While WhatsApp messages (in entirety) are encrypted by default, Facebook Messenger users must turn on the feature to get the extra additional security protection. Messenger users, however, cannot send videos or make payments in encrypted conversations.

Apple’s iMessage, on the other hand, is also end-to-end encrypted by default between iPhones. But this end-to-end encryption doesn’t work if the communication is happening between an iPhone and a non-iPhone device. Because in such a case, iMessage responds to unencrypted messages.

Another popular messaging app Telegram doesn’t offer end-to-end encryption for chats by default. Users, however, have a Secret Chats option to have one-on-one chats wherein messages are encrypted.

Authorities vs tech titans

It’s not the first time that a tech company has come under the radar of government authorities. US authorities last year fought a legal battle with tech giant Apple to get it to unlock a smartphone used by one of the shooters in a terror attack last year in San Bernadino, California. The FBI's own experts, however, ended up breaking into the device.

Social media giants are also coming under pressure over extremist content being posted on their sites. Germany this month proposed imposing fines on social networks such as Facebook if they fail to remove illegal hate speech from their sites.

Google, meanwhile, has faced a boycott by companies whose adverts appeared alongside extremist content on its internet platforms, particularly its video-sharing site YouTube.

WhatsApp and Telegram patched flaws in their popular instant messaging applications after security researchers showed that they could seize control of user accounts.

Researchers with Check Point Software Technologies discovered problems with the way the two apps process some types of files without verifying that they do not contain active code that could be malicious.

Flaws in popular instant messaging applications are less common than traditional desktop software. The apps are often used because of their heavy encryption, which has been criticised by some in laws enforcement.

Telegram's flaw was much more subtle and required "very unusual" behaviour by the victim, such as right-clicking on a video and opening a new tab, said spokesman Markus Ra.

There is no evidence that any similar attacks were actually used in the wild against either company's products, he said.

WhatsApp, Telegram fix security flaws in instant messaging applications

WhatsApp, the Facebook-owned messaging service used by more than 1 billion people worldwide, is testing a system that would let businesses talk directly to WhatsApp users for the first time, according to communications about the project seen by Reuters.

The tests, which are being conducted with a handful of companies that are part of the Y Combinator startup incubator, are an important signal of how WhatsApp plans to make money from its massively popular service. WhatsApp has not developed a business model in the three years since Facebook bought it for a hefty $19 billion.

WhatsApp, a pun on the phrase "What's up?", has helped to upend mobile services by allowing users to text or call friends and family for free, without text message charges. It competes with similar services such as WeChat, a unit of China's Tencent Holdings.

One potential revenue source is to charge businesses that want to contact customers on WhatsApp. But the company is working carefully to avoid problems with spam messages, the documents show.

WhatsApp is also surveying users about the extent to which they talk to businesses on WhatsApp, and whether they have ever received spam, according to the documents.

WhatsApp last year announced its plan to develop the system, known as an application programming interface, or API, citing examples such as a user talking to a bank about a fraudulent transaction or to an airline about a delayed flight.

Last month WhatsApp struck a deal with Y Combinator, which provides training and advice to startups that show potential, to have a small number of companies take part in an early trial, according to emails and messages posted on a Y Combinator forum.

Admission to Y Combinator, founded in 2005, is highly competitive, and past participants include such companies as Airbnb and Dropbox. A WhatsApp spokeswoman declined to comment on the testing of the system.

Y Combinator President Sam Altman said in an email he was not aware of the WhatsApp test but added: "We do generally see a lot of companies wanting to test their products with YC cos."

The trial is still in the early stages, said Umer Ilyas, co-founder of Cowlar Inc, one of the startups involved. The system is highly anticipated in remote places where WhatsApp is especially popular, he said.

Cowlar makes collars for dairy cows, collecting data on their activity and recommending changes to improve milk yield. The company, which is testing the collars in the United States, wants to use WhatsApp to send automatic alerts from the collars directly to farmers if say, a cow is not behaving normally, Ilyas said.

"It represents a huge opportunity, because in all the big dairy markets - India, Brazil, Pakistan - a lot of farmers have access to WhatsApp," he said in a phone interview.

Y Combinator President Sam Altman said in an email he was not aware of the WhatsApp test but added: "We do generally see a lot of companies wanting to test their products with YC cos." The trial is still in the early stages, said Umer Ilyas, co-founder of Cowlar Inc, one of the startups involved. (Reuters)

WhatsApp is testing new feature to let businesses talk directly to users

WhatsApp has added a set of new functionalities to its basic text-only Status feature. The new WhatsApp Status feature is similar to Snapchat and Instagram stories, which let people share ephemeral posts.

The new Status feature on WhatsApp allows users to share photos, videos and GIFs with friends and other contacts in a secure way. Quite like stories on Snapchat and Instagram, status updates on WhatsApp also disappear after 24 hours. Users can also control who can see the status updates by tweaking the Privacy settings.

The updated version of the app features a separate Status tab where users can see the updates shared in the last 24 hours. Similar to messages exchanged on the instant messenger, status updates are also end-to-end encrypted.

“Even after we added messaging in the summer of 2009, we kept the basic "text only" status functionality in WhatsApp. Every year, when Brian and I would plan projects to work on, we always talked about improving and evolving this original "text only" status feature. We are excited to announce that, coinciding with WhatsApp's 8th birthday on February 24, we are reinventing the status feature,” says Jan Koum, CEO and co-founder, WhatsApp.

The company has already started rolling out an update to Status for Android, iOS and Windows Phone.

WhatsApp Status gets Snapchat-like features: Here?s how it works

With an aim to make user accounts more secure, WhatsApp has introduced a two-step verification model for users across iPhone, Android and Windows.

Two-step verification is an optional feature that adds more security to your WhatsApp account. “When you have the feature enabled, any attempt to verify your phone number on WhatsApp must be accompanied by the six-digit passcode that you choose,” explains WhatsApp.

To enable two-step verification, go to WhatsApp > Settings > Account > Two-step verification > Enable.

Upon enabling this feature, you can also optionally enter your email address. This email address will allow WhatsApp to send you a link via email to disable two-step verification in case you ever forget your six-digit passcode, and also to help you safeguard your account. WhatsApp, however, does not verify this email address to confirm its accuracy. You, therefore, are suggested to provide an accurate email address so that you are not locked out of your account if you forget your passcode.

“If you receive an email to disable two-step verification, but did not request this, do not click on the link. Someone could be attempting to verify your phone number on WhatsApp,” warns WhatsApp.

If you have two-step verification enabled, your number will not be permitted to reverify on WhatsApp within 7 days of last using it without your passcode. Thus, if you forget your own passcode, but did not provide an email to disable two-step verification, even you will not be permitted to reverify on WhatsApp within 7 days of last using WhatsApp.

After these 7 days, your number will be permitted to reverify on WhatsApp without your passcode, but you will lose all pending messages upon reverifying.

To help you remember your passcode, WhatsApp will periodically ask you to enter the passcode. There is no option to disable this without disabling the two-step verification feature.

The company has already started rolling out the feature for users across the globe.

WhatsApp introduces new feature to help you make your account more secure

In times when GIFs are becoming increasingly popular in digital conversations and across social networks, WhatsApp can’t afford to be far behind in the race. Making the chat experience richer, Facebook-owned WhatsApp is bringing the much-awaited GIF support to its messaging service.

The new GIF feature is currently limited to beta testers of the app and will soon be rolled out to users across the world. But if you can’t wait to get it on your WhatsApp, you can sign up for the Android Beta Testing Program by going here.

Here’s how you can send GIFs to WhatsApp users:

1. Once you have the latest build (currently, version 2.17.6) of WhatsApp on your phone, go to any chat window or for that matter, to the chat window of a person you want to send a GIF to.

2. Tap the emoji icon located in the message box (where you type messages) and an emoji tray will pop up.

3. You can now find the “GIF” button located at the bottom of the tray. As you tap on it, you will be taken to the GIF tray with a search bar.

4. You can then search and choose a GIF, add a caption if you want, and send.

There is no word on when the new GIF feature will be officially rolled out for Android users. iOS users, however, got the GIF support within the app back in November 2016.

Besides the GIF support, WhatsApp for Android has also increased the media sharing limit from 10 to 30.

How Android users can send GIFs on WhatsApp from within the app

Popular social media application WhatsApp has stopped working in older iPhones and Android handsets to ensure that it could continue to introduce new features and stay secure, which relies on the app being used on newer operating systems.

Anyone using Android 2.1 or 2.2, an iPhone 3GS or iOS 6 will find the app has stopped working.

The same will happen to anyone on Windows Phone 7, the Independent reported yesterday.

The company has advised that anyone with one of those older handsets who want to keep chatting with friends simply has to buy a newer phone.

WhatsApp had initially said that all BlackBerry models and some Nokia handsets would also find themselves unable to get onto the chat app.

But it went back late last year, apparently in response to complaints.

"We are extending support for BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10, Nokia S40 and Nokia Symbian S60 until June 30, 2017," the company wrote in an update to its blog.

The changes are thought to be in large part to allow WhatsApp to more deeply integrate encryption and other privacy services.

Such technology stops messages from being read, and has led to WhatsApp facing criticism from governments who believe that WhatsApp conversations should be made public, the report said.

It's also likely to allow for a more rapid introduction of new features.

Rumoured updates scheduled in 2017 include a new feature that would allow people to edit or entirely delete messages after they have been sent.

WhatsApp could stop working on certain phones by end of this year

One of the world’s most popular means of communication, Facebook's WhatsApp, is adding fully encrypted video calling to its messaging app on Monday, a move that comes as privacy advocates worry about the potential for stepped-up government surveillance under a Trump administration.

WhatsApp, which boasts more than a billion users worldwide, adopted end-to-end encryption early this year, making it technically impossible for the company or government authorities to read messages or listen to calls.

The new video calling service will thus provide another means for people to communicate without fear of eavesdropping, though WhatsApp does retain other data such as an individual's list of contacts.

WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum said in an interview that video calls will be rolled out to 180 countries within hours after the feature is introduced at an event in India.

“We obviously try to be in tune with what our users want,” Koum said at the company’s unmarked Mountain View, California headquarters building. “We’re obsessed with making sure that voice and video work well even on low-end phones.”

Koum told Reuters that improvements in phone cameras, battery life and bandwidth had made the service viable for a significant proportion of WhatsApp users, even those using inexpensive smartphones.

Apple Inc offers its FaceTime video calls to iPhone users, and Microsoft Corp's Skype offers video calls on multiple platforms. But WhatsApp has built a massive installed base of mobile customers and has been steadily adding more features to what began as a simple chat applications.

WhatsApp has operated with some autonomy since Facebook bought it in 2014. Koum and co-founder Brian Acton, longtime Yahoo engineers who started the company in 2009, now have 200 staff, mostly engineers and customer support, up from 50 when Facebook bought it.

Koum said Facebook has allowed WhatsApp to use its servers and bandwidth around the world for voice and now video. That support will help spread the souped-up WhatsApp much farther and faster, he said.

But the corporate allegiance also has a price. After years of pledging that it would not share information about users with Facebook, which already has digital dossiers on its own 1.7 billion users, WhatsApp revised its privacy statement in August to say it would do exactly that. That means Facebook knows whom WhatsApp users contact and their phone numbers.

Some users complained, but Koum said that he had not seen a shift in behavior.

“In terms of security and privacy, what people care about the most is the privacy of their messages,” he said.

The video service is well integrated and adds a few twists. Users can move around the thumbnail video showing what their correspondent sees and flick a video call in progress to the side to minimize it while checking texts or email.

Koum said WhatsApp remained committed to security after the US election of Donald Trump as president last week heightened fears of increased surveillance.

Trump, along with some leading congressional Republicans and FBI Director James Comey, has advocated requiring tech companies to turn over customer information in many circumstances, a position which, if put into law, could require companies including WhatsApp to completely redesign their services.

Other countries including China and the United Kingdom also take a dim view of encryption.

But Koum said he did not see a major threat to his service, noting that diplomats and officials use WhatsApp in many countries.

“It would be like them shooting themselves in the foot.”

WhatsApp adds secure video calling amid privacy concerns

Facebook-owned WhatsApp has started rolling out the much-anticipated video-calling feature for Android. The feature, which was first teased by the company back in May, is now available for the beta testers of the app.

WhatsApp users, who have signed up for the Android Beta Testing Program, can have access to the video-calling feature by downloading the latest build (v 2.16.319), which is available as an update via Google Play. The company, however, is yet to release the feature for the public.

The release of the video-calling feature for WhatsApp has not led to any significant changes in the app’s interface and design. The company has not added a separate video call icon to indicate the new feature. It, instead, has integrated it into the existing voice call icon. In other words, once upgraded to the latest version of the app, tapping on the call icon will give users options to choose between “Voice call” and “Video call”.

To help you keep a track of your video calls, the call log section in WhatsApp clearly shows who all you made video calls to by putting up a video camera icon against names (contacts). The voice calls, similarly, are indicated by a call icon.

The release of the video-calling feature for WhatsApp has not led to any significant changes in the app?s interface and design

WhatsApp now lets Android users make video calls. (WION) × WhatsApp users can only make video calls to users who have the latest version of the app installed on their phones. Pippa Middleton's iCloud account hacked, royal photos stolen: Report

The Delhi High Court, while allowing Facebook-owned WhatsApp to enforce its new privacy policy, issued directions to safeguard the interest of the users.

The court stated that WhatsApp could not appropriate data of the users who have been using the popular messaging service since before September 25.

The court added that protection of data would be extended to those who had deleted their accounts and prohibited WhatsApp from using this data for its commercial purpose.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the telecom regulatory body, was also asked to determine if an instant messaging service such as WhatsApp could be could be brought under existing statutory framework. To this, TRAI responded that so far, "instant messaging applications have not yet been brought within the purview of the statutory regulatory framework."

On August 25, WhatsApp, issued a notification asking its users to accept the changes they made in its terms and conditions.

According to the new terms, the instant messaging app would share the user information it collected with their parent company Facebook and all its group companies for commercial advertising and marketing on its platform.

The information shared would include phone numbers and information on a user's contact list.

This policy was challenged in the High Court through a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by students Karmanya Singh Sareen and Shreya Sethi, who alleged that by sharing information, WhatsApp was "violation of fundamental rights of users."

The petitioners contended the new policy completely compromised the basic tenet of complete security and protection of privacy of the details and data belonging to users.

It was this basic, yet extremely significant, essential and basic feature of this internet-based messaging service, that attracted many of the users.

However, the instant messaging app, defended its policy by stating that users were not obliged to use the application. Though, no notice was issued to the respondent, WhatsApp chose to enter appearance on its own accord and submitted a short affidavit, on September 19, detailing the key features of its new policy.

In its affidavit, the respondents stated that not only WhatsApp did not store information on its servers beyond 30 days, it also gave the users the option to not share their information with Facebook.

The policy, which is likely to take effect on 25 September, allows users not to accept the new policy by making changes in their WhatsApp settings and un-checking on the box allowing for sharing of information.

In order "to protect interest of users", the bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal directed WhatsApp to delete information and data of persons who opt out of the service before September 25 and not to share it with Facebook or its group companies.

How to use WhatsApp/Skpye/Viber without an internet connection

The European Union will subject internet services like WhatsApp and Skype to similar rules that traditional telecommunications firms face, according to major reform proposals unveiled Wednesday.

In a major victory for traditional phone companies, the European Commission, the executive arm of the 28-nation bloc, recommended tighter privacy and security for services like Facebook-owned message service WhatsApp and Microsoft's video phone portal Skype.

The demand is part of a package of reforms proposed by Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, which includes a promise to provide free wifi in European towns by 2020.

"We propose today to equip every European village and every city with free wireless internet access around the main centres of public life by 2020," Juncker said as he gave his annual State of the Union speech.

The plan also includes a commitment to begin converting Europe to 5G networks as early as 2018 in order to not lose ground to Asia and the United States.

The proposal gives companies that invest in 5G networks longer running licenses to operate mobile services as well as the right to block rivals except in under-served areas.

"It's a small revolution. It's no longer historic operators on one side and new entrants on the other, it's those investing in the future and the others," said Gregoire Verdeaux, head of international policy at Vodafone.

The demands on services such as Skype are unprecedented but were underplayed by the commission.

But under the proposal, the commission would require companies like WhatsApp or Skype to offer emergency-calling services when customers dial traditional phone numbers as well as obey stricter privacy rules.

"The Commission should use this opportunity to reduce regulation in the hugely competitive market for communications services, rather than adding complexity," said James Waterworth, of the Computer & Communications Industry Association, a lobby group that represents Microsoft, Facebook and Google.
