“So long there are very large deployments, border situation is not normal. We still have ongoing friction areas, where some progress has been made in resolving some friction areas, including Pangong Tso. Our discussion today was how to take this forward. There have been 15 rounds of talks,” he told the media after the conclusion of his talks.

When he was asked where the India-China ties lie at this juncture, he responded, “If you ask me if our relationship today is normal, then my answer is 'no it is not normal' (because of the Chinese deployments). Our effort today is to sort out the issue in its entirety."

With regards to Ladakh, the minister said there are still ongoing friction areas and there was "progress in other areas", adding, “There should not be attempts to unilaterally change status quo."

He said the relationship was based on “three mutuals—- mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest”.

India also raised the issue of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s references to Kashmir at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in Islamabad.

“I referred to it. I explained to him why we found that statement objectionable. It was a subject discussed at some length. There was a larger context as well,” he said.

“I conveyed that we hope that China would follow an independent policy in respect of India and not allow its policies to be influenced by other countries and other relationships,” he added.

The Indian minister further said that Afghanistan and Ukraine issues were also discussed at length during the talks.

“So far as Afghanistan is concerned, India's policy is guided by the UN Security Council Resolution 2593. On Ukraine, we discussed our respective approaches &amp; perspective but agreed that diplomacy and dialogue must be the priority,” he said.

When asked for reasons surrounding the secrecy of the Chinese minister’s visit, Jaishankar said, “Chinese did not want the visit to be announced earlier.”

Earlier in the day, Wang Yi met Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, who asserted that an "early and complete disengagement of troops" at points of friction along the border was key to restoring normal ties between the two countries.

Doval also called for removing "impediments" to allow bilateral ties to "take the natural course" and stressed that "actions should not violate the spirit of equal and mutual security".

The visit comes in the backdrop of tense border relations that engulfed in 2020 at the northern Galwan Valley, where a tussle between Chinese and Indian troops resulted in 20 casualties from the Indian Army side.

While several reports indicated that Chine lost around 42 soldiers in the clash.

The minister’s visit comes just a day after India called out Wang Yi for making references about Kashmir in his opening speech at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in Islamabad.

"On Kashmir, we have heard again today the calls of many of our Islamic friends. And China shares the same hope," he had said.

Earlier in the day, he arrived in Kabul, a week before Beijing hosts a meeting of Afghanistan's neighbours to see how they can help the country following its takeover by the hardline Islamist group.

"Chinese Foreign Minister arrives in Kabul for talks with Islamic Emirate leaders," said&nbsp;Ahmad Yasir, a top Taliban government official.

According to a Xinhua report on Thursday, minister Wang met with Pakistani Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Wednesday where the two discussed Afghanistan among a range of issues.

On the Afghanistan issue, Wang called for wisdom of the East to promote dialogue and communication to solve it, instead of resorting to pressure or sanctions, the state-media reported.

Chinese foreign minister lands in New Delhi, likely to meet Doval, Jaishankar

India slammed Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi for making references to Jammu and Kashmir during his speech at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) conference in Islamabad, Pakistan.

The response comes as there are reports that Wang Yi is expected to visit India on Thursday (March 24), but there is no official confirmation from both side.

In response to media queries, the Ministry of External Affair’s official spokesperson Arindam Bagchi on Wednesday said that China has no locus standi to comment on the issue.

“We reject the uncalled reference to India by the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during his speech at the opening ceremony,” he said.

Bagchi asserted that the matters related to Kashmir are “entirely the internal affairs of India”.

&nbsp;“They (China) should note that India refrains from the public judgement of their internal issues,” he said in a reference to China’s treatment of Uyghur Muslims.

At the OIC summit on Tuesday, Wang Yi was quoted as saying, "On the Kashmir issue, we have heard the voices of many Islamic friends again today, and China has the same desire for this,” without elaborating further.

“China would continue to support the people of Palestine and Kashmir in their just freedom struggles,” he added.

Wang Yi, who was attending the meet as a special guest, further said: “China will continue to support Islamic countries in using Islamic wisdom to solve contemporary hotspot issues, and firmly hold the right to maintaining stability and promoting peace in its own hands."

Apart from Wang Yi, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan also talked about Kashmir and lamented the OIC’s inability to intervene on the issue.

The Saudi delegation, including top executives from state-owned oil company Saudi Aramco, arrived on Thursday on an Asia tour that has already seen the kingdom pledge investment of $20 billion in Pakistan and seek to make additional investments in India's refining industry.

"China is a good friend and partner to Saudi Arabia," President Xi Jinping told the crown prince in front of reporters.

"The special nature of our bilateral relationship reflects the efforts you have made," added Xi, who has made stepping up China's presence in the Middle East a key foreign policy objective, despite its traditional low-key role there.

The crown prince said Saudi Arabia's relations with China dated back "a very long time in the past".

"In the hundreds, even thousands, of years, the interactions between the sides have been friendly. Over such a long period of exchanges with China, we have never experienced any problems with China," he said.

China has had to step carefully in relations with Riyadh, since Beijing also has close ties with Saudi Arabia's regional foe, Iran.

China is also wary of criticism from Muslim countries about its camps in the heavily Muslim far western region of Xinjiang, which the government says are for de-radicalisation purposes and rights groups call internment camps.

Xi told the crown prince the two countries must strengthen international cooperation on de-radicalisation to "prevent the infiltration and spread of extremist thinking", Chinese state television said.

Aramco agreed to form a joint venture with Chinese defence conglomerate Norinco to develop a refining and petrochemical complex in the northeastern Chinese city of Panjin, saying the project was worth more than $10 billion.

The partners would form a company called Huajin Aramco Petrochemical Co as part of a project that would include a 300,000-barrels-per-day (bpd) refinery with a 1.5-million-metric-tonnes-per-year ethylene cracker, Aramco said.

Aramco will supply up to 70 percent of the crude feedstock for the complex, which is expected to start operations in 2024.

The investments could help Saudi Arabia regain its place as the top oil exporter to China, a position Russia has held for the last three years. Saudi Aramco is set to boost market share by signing supply deals with non-state Chinese refiners.

Aramco also signed an agreement to buy a 9 percent stake in Zhejiang Petrochemical, Saudi state news agency SPA said. This formalised a previously announced plan to gain a stake in a 400,000-bpd refinery and petrochemicals complex in Zhoushan, south of Shanghai.

On Saturday, Indian and Chinese troops concluded the seventh round of counter-terrorism military exercises in China's Chengdu city in which over 100-strong contingents from both nations took part in the drills.

This year's 'Hand-in-Hand' exercises focussed on urban terrorism. The drills were not held last year following the Doklam standoff as tensions between the two armies reached boiling point.
