Germany’s Ambassador to India Walter J Lindner&nbsp;has said that his country will intensify cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.

His comments come even as German frigate FGS Bayern (F217) made a port call to Mumbai as part of its seven-month deployment to the Indo-Pacific region.

He said, "It is the beginning of intensified cooperation…”

Germany, along with other European countries like France, UK, have upped the engagement in the region.

Asked if Germany will join any diplomatic group or exercises such as the Malabar exercises, the top German envoy said, “Not going in details. In general, we will be more active in the Indo-Pacific region. We will see what kind of organisation it means and includes—whether it’s a military organisation or a diplomatic organisation. It shows that our focus is shifting more to the region than it was before.”

The Malabar exercise is an annual naval exercise between India, US, Australia and Japan in the region.

In 2020, the German government announced its policy on the Indo‑Pacific with the aim to strengthen the country's role in the region in the long term.

Envoy Lindner, who was on the visit of the frigate, explained, that it’s a “symbolic act that we walk the talk, we are just not issuing nice papers in strategy, but we send a symbol”.

The visit of the German frigate to Mumbai marks the last stop of its deployment, after a decade-long presence in the Indo-Pacific.

The ship also helped enforce the UN-administered arms embargo against North Korea prior to its journey through the South China Sea.

The envoy’s visit coincided with the visit of the chief of the German Navy, Vice Admiral Kay-Achim Schönbach to Delhi.

Commander Tilo Kalski of the frigate, who was also present at the virtual presser, said, “This tour has been kind of an ice breaker, kind of the beginning of new era”.

Indo-Pacific has emerged as one of the key focuses of the world leaders, given that it houses more than 50 per cent of the world population, and a substantial trade passes through its waters.

Speaking on China, the envoy said that Beijing is a “partner in some respect for the global challenges" it is also an "economic competitor and a systemic rival which means we have a different system. We have a democratic system just like India has.”

On the Chinese aggressiveness in the region, he said. “We don’t turn a blind eye on (such) behaviour that threatens international law...We are in favour of respect for the rules-based international community.”

And that's what makes those meetings doubtful for many people out there because they do not know what's happening there, who is talking with whom but it is true. That is the gist of diplomacy - that things are discussed at the sidelines - but I think we have to make sure that it's more transparent," Lindner said on WION World Order.

Programmes like these should be more open, it's not a clandestine thing. World leaders come together in these summits and take responsibility, he added.

Talking about threats of the digital era he said on WION World Order, "With the new technology and digitalisation, we have to find rules for it. Otherwise, it will be the law of the jungle".

The latest G20 summit in Japan's Osaka, for which Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Japan, is being held a time when the very idea of multilateral talks to manage global affairs and resolve disputes is at a threat.

"We want to support multilateralism. The gist of the matter is: With over 7 billion people, how do we organise a body which takes decisions," said German Ambassador.

The summit of Group of 20 major economies is going to be a crucial one. The summit, to be held from June 28-29 in the western Japanese city of Osaka, should find a solution for global challenges, German ambassador Walter J Lindner has said.

"Global problems cannot be solved on a national or unilateral basis. So the G20 summit can contribute to find solutions for global challenges. We have no time to waste. The challenges are immense: Global warming, waste, clean energy, future of work, terrorism, welfare... to name a few," he said.

The agenda for this year's G20 summit is "human-centeredness" and "data free flow with trust" which aims to create a framework for discussion on rules for digital economy.

While China's President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump will discuss the ongoing trade war and how to tackle plastic waste, financial stability, black money, and terrorism will top India's agenda. All eyeballs will be on "Trump-Putin", "Trump-Xi" and "Trump-Erdogan" bilaterals.

Substantial discussions on trade, including reform of the World Trade Organisation or WTO, will likely take place at the summit. Japan, which chairs this year's G20 gatherings, will take a neutral stance in the US-China trade row and urge countries to resolve tensions with a multilateral framework.

China and the United States, the world's two largest economies, are in the middle of a costly trade dispute that has pressured financial markets and damaged the world economy.

Founded in 1999, the G20 is made up of 19 major countries and the European Union. Collectively, G20 members represent 85 per cent of global economic output, two thirds of the world population and 75 per cent of international trade.

WION: You presented credentials to President in Hindi. Why so? 
 
Walter J Lindner: Because I think, one should respect the country where you are stationed, I tried my whole life to do that, to pick up the language. Now I'm here for 6 weeks, I might not be fluent, but ask me the same question in 6 months, I will reply in Hindi. This is an act of respect, it is a great language.

WION: How do you see the ties between the two countries? 
 
Walter J Lindner: Chancellor will come again to India, at the end of the year. we have not yet fixed the date, but it will be October and November. We have a lot of common interest. One is multilateralism, other is the maintenance of peace, other is UN system, fight against terrorism, the future of technology, future of work like what we will do in 20 years with things going automatic, artificial intelligence. There are so many things both of us are in the same wavelength.

WION: Germany has backed India on the issue of terror. How do both countries plan to tackle the issue? 
 
Walter J Lindner: We will work together very closely in the UN and we will keep informed bilaterally. I will see colleagues in the foreign ministry. So we will see, what's on the agenda and how can we have a common position. As I said, we are both of the conviction that terrorism is something which has to be eradicated from the planet. Maybe it is not possible, we have to do everything we can.

WION: How do you see Indian elections and expectations from the new government? 
 
Walter J Lindner: First of all what we have seen is the biggest elections on this planet in humankind. Never before so many people have voted, and the way it was organised, all these voting machines and all these different voting dates. Its a world record in organising elections. So congratulations. We are confident whoever wins will have strong ties with Germany and will continue the close cooperation.
