<p>This is because the last 20 minutes of the mission will comprise of an autonomous movement.</p>

<p>On Tuesday, the ISRO informed that the Chandrayaan-3 mission, scheduled for its soft-landing on the lunar surface on August 23, is right on schedule.</p>

<p>The ISRO also shared a video of images of the lunar surface captured by the Lander Position Detection Camera (LPDC) from an altitude of about 70 km, the ISRO.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"LPDC images assist the Lander Module in determining its position (latitude and longitude) by matching them against an onboard moon reference map," it said.</p>

<p>According to a senior ISRO scientist, the ISRO will go ahead with the landing only if conditions on the day are "favourable".</p>

<p>Else, a fresh attempt will be made on August 27.</p>

<p>In a post on X, previously known as Twitter, ISRO said that the orbiter of Chandrayaan-2 sent a welcome message to the Vikram lander of Chandrayaan-3 mission. The Vikram lander is scheduled to land on Moon's southern pole, following which India will become the first nation in the world to land on Moon's southern pole.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Vikram has already sent home the images of the Moon's craters on the unexplored lunar south pole region. The south pole region of Moon always faces away from the Earth.</p>

Chandrayaan-3 lander establishes connection with special 'buddy' ahead of historic lunar landing

<p>After a 37-day journey, the Chandrayaan-3 lander craft 'Vikram' is now barely 25 kilometres above the Lunar surface. This is the lowest orbit it will remain in before it commences its powered descent (manoeuvres that will lead to the Lunar soft landing). "The powered descent is expected to commence on August 23rd, 2023, around 5:45 pm IST," ISRO said. This indicates that the Lunar soft-landing could be completed by 6:15 pm on Wednesday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The lander craft performed its second and final de-boost manoeuvre at 2 am IST, Sunday,&nbsp;August 20. This brought the lander craft from an orbit of 113kmsx157kms to an orbit of 25kmsx134kms. This means the craft is barely 25 km above the lunar surface, at its closest approach and 134 km above the lunar surface at its farthest approach.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chandrayaan-3 has a specific landing date of August 23, as the day marks the commencement of the Lunar daytime. Landing during the Lunar Day would help the Indian craft charge its batteries by harnessing solar power.</p>

<p>Given that Chandrayaan-3 (lander-rover) has a mission life of only one Lunar day (14.75 Earth days), it is imperative for the craft to begin its operations immediately once the lunar day&nbsp;breaks. This would give it the maximum possible operational time to carry out in-situ experiments, as planned.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, as it performed a similar manoeuvre to move into a pre-landing orbit, Russia's Luna-25 craft ran&nbsp;into trouble and crashed into the moon and the mission has reportedly failed. Chandrayaan's Vikram is meant to land near 70 degree latitude of the moon, which is near the unexplored southern polar region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chief K Sivan has claimed that the Vikram Lander of Chandrayaan-2 had been spotted by the space agency's orbiter much ahead of NASA, which on Tuesday announced that it had located the debris of Vikram's crash landing on the moon in September last year and credited Chennai based engineer for the finding.</p>

<p>"Our own orbiter had located Vikram Lander, we had already declared that on our website, you can go back and see," said Sivan while speaking to reporters here on Tuesday.</p>

<p>ISRO chief's comments came after NASA said that it had found the remains of the Vikram lander has been found by its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and credited the discovery to Chennai based amateur astronomer and engineer Shanmuga Subramanium.</p>

<p>On ISRO's website, a statement on September 10 says, "Vikram lander has been located by the orbiter of Chandrayaan-2, but no communication with it yet. All possible efforts are being made to establish communication with lander."</p>

<p>On December 3, American space agency NASA had in a tweet said, "The #Chandrayaan2 Vikram lander has been found by our @NASAMoon mission, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. See the first mosaic of the impact site."</p>

<p>NASA posted images clicked by its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Camera, showing the site's changes on the Moon and the impact point before and after the spacecraft had made a hard-landing on the lunar surface.</p>

<p>It also indicated the impact spot of the Lander and an associated debris field created by the crash with blue and green dots respectively.</p>

<p>"Green dots indicate spacecraft debris (confirmed or likely). Blue dots locate disturbed soil, likely where small bits of the spacecraft churned up the regolith. "S" indicates debris identified by Shanmuga Subramanian," the statement had said.</p>

<p>The Lander Vikram was to soft-land on the far side of the moon at on September 7. Minutes before its scheduled soft-landing, the communication with Vikram Lander was lost.</p>

<p>It was 2.1 km above the moon's surface when it lost contact with the ground stations.</p>

<p>The Vikram Lander successfully separated from Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter on September 2. After revolving around the Earth's orbit for nearly 23 days, the craft began its journey to the moon on August 14.</p>

<p>The mission took off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on July 22.</p>

<p>Subramanian said that he used to analyse images released by NASA's LROC to compare moon's earlier images with the ones after Vikram had lost contact. &nbsp;"I was spending something 8-10 hours each day for four to five hours on that. I stopped my research after I sent the tweet because I knew that this might be the probable debris," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He then shared his results with NASA on October 3.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Subramanian is delighted with NASA's reponse which recognized his efforts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"ISRO is gearing up for the Gaganyaan space program. We will send two unmanned missions to space, one of them will be by end of 2020 and second is targeted to be launched by August 2021 so that we can have the manned mission by December 2021," he said.</p>

<p>The ISRO chairman was in the city to attend a conference organised by the Indian Society of Systems For Science and Engineering (ISSE).</p>
