The United States has announced a 25% tariff on any country purchasing oil or gas from Venezuela. The decision is expected to impact key buyers like China, India, Spain, Italy, and Cuba. Analysts suggest this tariff could push Venezuela to offer deeper discounts on its oil, similar to previous US Sanctions that forced lower prices.

Trump hits Venezuelan oil buyers with 25% tariff

US President Donald Trump has declared that from 2 April 2025, any country purchasing oil or gas from Venezuela will face a 25 per cent tariff on all trade with the United States. The move marks a further escalation in Trump’s trade disputes with both rivals and long-standing allies.
"Venezuela has been very hostile to the United States and the Freedoms which we espouse," Trump wrote on his platform, Truth Social. "Therefore, any Country that purchases Oil and/or Gas from Venezuela will be forced to pay a Tariff of 25% to the United States on any Trade they do with our Country," he added.

He went on to say, "All documentation will be signed and registered, and the Tariff will take place on April 2nd, 2025, LIBERATION DAY IN AMERICA."
The announcement comes just over a week before Trump could move ahead with what he refers to as "retaliatory tariffs" on all US trading partners. These tariffs, set to be introduced on the same date, are part of his long-standing pledge to rebalance trade and bring in extra revenue as Republicans prepare a new tax and spending bill.
However, reports on Monday suggested that the White House might adopt a more targeted strategy than previously expected. Rather than applying tariffs broadly, the administration could focus on what it’s calling the “dirty 15” the small group of countries, roughly 15 per cent of the total, that have the most unbalanced trade relationships with the US.
This more selective approach follows Trump’s comments last Friday, where he hinted there might be some “flexibility” in how the tariffs are rolled out.

U.S. Says Venezuela Opposition Leader Won The Elections

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has called on international oil companies to cease operations under Nicolás Maduro’s government. She argues that continuing to work with Maduro legitimizes a regime she deems corrupt and responsible for the country’s severe economic crisis. Machado emphasizes that foreign investment should align with democratic principles and the restoration of human rights in Venezuela. Her appeal aims to pressure oil companies to reconsider their involvement, highlighting the broader struggle for democracy and accountability in the nation.

Venezuela: Machado Urges Oil Companies To Stop Operating Under Maduro

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has claimed that opposition leader María Corina Machado has fled the country. Machado, a prominent critic of Maduro’s government, has been leading a movement for political change in Venezuela. Maduro's statement comes amid heightened political tensions and a crackdown on opposition figures. Courts in Argentina and Venezuela issued warrants for the arrests of each other's presidents on Monday amid a showdown between "anarcho-capitalist" leader Javier Milei and socialist strongman Nicolas Maduro.

Courts in Argentina and Venezuela issued warrants for the arrests of each other's presidents on Monday amid a showdown between "anarcho-capitalist" leader Javier Milei and socialist strongman Nicolas Maduro. Venezuela was first off the mark with its warrant for Argentina's Milei over what it called the "theft" of a Venezuelan plane seized in Buenos Aires for alleged sanctions violations. A court in Caracas also issued warrants for Argentina's Security Minister Patricia Bullrich and Karina Milei, the president's sister and presidential advisor. In a tit-for-tat measure hours later, an Argentine court ordered the arrest of Venezuela's Maduro and dozens of aides for crimes against humanity. Significantly, the court also asked international police organisation Interpol to issue a red notice for their capture, local media reported. The federal court in Buenos Aires accused Venezuela's leaders of organising the kidnap and torture of Venezuelan citizens, the reports added. The court invoked the principle of universal jurisdiction, which allows countries to prosecute certain serious crimes regardless of where they took place. Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello is among those sought. Watch | Venezuela: 'US plot to destabilise Maduro government' × Polar opposites Venezuela has repeatedly locked horns with Argentina, where Milei, a vocal critic of Maduro-style socialism, took office last December. Argentina was among dozens of countries not to recognise Maduro's claim of reelection victory in a July 28 vote which the opposition said it can prove he stole. Argentina -- whose embassy in Caracas is sheltering Venezuelan opposition officials -- was among seven Latin American countries with which Caracas severed ties after the election. The arrest warrant issued by Venezuela for Milei relates to a cargo plane owned by Venezuelan company Emtrasur, which was seized after landing in Argentina in June 2022, before Milei took office. An Argentine judge then granted a request for the United States to seize the plane on grounds that laws were broken when Iran sold it to Venezuela. Both countries are under US sanctions. Venezuela's Supreme Tribunal of Justice on Monday accused Milei of aggravated robbery, unlawful detention and "unlawful interference with the operational safety of civil aviation." Also read | Maduro warns Venezuelan dissidents of 'tun-tun operations', calls against use of WhatsApp The arrest warrant was seen as largely symbolic, as it is unlikely Milei will set foot in Venezuela, which is the only country where the warrant applies. Maduro's regime has lashed out repeatedly over the past week at its critics, notably accusing the United States of plotting to overthrow late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez's handpicked successor.
