Officials are investigating the unauthorized construction.

Self-styled godman Baba Yogi Chaitanya Akash has claimed that he received divine instructions to construct the temple at the eco-sensitive area in the mountains.

“The Baba influenced villagers to support the temple building project,” Mahendra Singh Dhami, a villager was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

He informed that Baba said, “Devi Bhagwati appeared in his dreams and directed him to build the temple at Devi Kund.”

It may be mentioned here, that the man has also been seen bathing in the kund, a spot considered sacred by pilgrims and locals. Many find this disrespectful and a defilement of the holy site.

While another local resident said, “This is profanity. For generations, our deities have visited the kund during the Nanda Raj Yatra every 12 years, which is a sacred spot. Now, this so-called baba has misled villagers and established this temple and disregarded our traditions.”

However, the local administration has now launched an investigation into the unauthorised construction.

Kapkot sub-divisional magistrate Anurag Arya said a team from the forest department, police, and revenue office will soon visit Devi Kund to remove the encroachment and take suitable action against Yogi Chaitanya.

“We have received information about the mandir’s construction. A team is being dispatched to review the situation at the location,” said ND Pandey, ranger, Glacier Range.

The unauthorised temple has exposed a critical gap in intelligence gathering and enforcement. This is particularly concerning given the ongoing government campaign to remove illegal structures in sensitive areas.

Locals and officials are worried about the ease with which unauthorized individuals can operate undetected in these zones.

An official panel responsible for drafting rules for northern India's Uttarakhand's Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is striving to protect the privacy of data provided by live-in couples. But at the same time, the committee chief suggested that information about live-in couples aged 18 to 21 should be shared with their parents.

On Friday (Jul 12), the report by the expert committee tasked with drafting the UCC, led by Justice (retd) Ranjana Prakash Desai, was made available on an official website.

Shatrughna Singh, chairman of the UCC rules-making and implementation committee and a member of the Justice Desai panel, explained that the report could not be released earlier due to the enforcement of the model code of conduct in the wake of Lok Sabha polls in the summer.

At a press conference, Singh assured that the panel would ensure the privacy of data provided during the registration of marriages and live-in relationships.

But when questioned about the potential privacy concerns of informing parents about live-in couples aged 18 to 21, Singh, a former chief secretary of Uttarakhand, acknowledged that the issue was debatable.

"Data of live-in couples above 21 years of age will be totally protected. But, for couples aged between 18 and 21 years, the committee was of the view that the age (despite the fact that they have voting rights) is tender and so the parents should also be kept in the loop by way of precaution for the safety of the couple," he said.

The UCC Bill, passed by the Uttarakhand Assembly on February 7, became law with President Droupadi Murmu's assent on March 11. Uttarakhand is the first state in India post-independence to adopt such a law.

The Uniform Civil Code of Uttarakhand Act, 2024, aims to regulate laws related to marriage, divorce, succession, live-in relationships, inheritance, and maintenance for all citizens, regardless of religion, gender, caste, or sex. But it excludes Scheduled Tribes from its jurisdiction.

Fourteen people were killed and twelve others injured when a tempo traveller plunged into the Alaknanda River in India's Uttarakhand state on Saturday (June 15), according to reports. The tragic event is said to have likely happened because of a blind turn following which the driver lost control of the vehicle. The devastating incident took place in Rudraprayag district on Saturday (June 15), according to the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). The ill-fated vehicle, bearing a Haryana registration number, had 26 passengers in it. As per SDRF, the death toll could rise as several injured individuals are in critical condition. SDRF Commandant Manikant Mishra shared that the tempo traveller had departed from Delhi around 11 pm on Friday (June 14) and was en route to Chopta, 209 kilometres from Uttarakhand's capital city of Dehradun. Uttarakhand accident: At least 14 killed, 12 injured as tempo traveller falls into Alaknanda river

Nine trekkers tragically lost their lives after being trapped in a blizzard while returning from Sahastra Tal in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, on June 4. The group, part of a 22-member trekking team organised by the Karnataka Mountaineering Association (KMA), faced severe weather conditions that caused them to lose their way.

A joint air-ground rescue operation was launched and 13 trekkers were rescued.

Even as poor weather hindered helicopter efforts and posed challenges for the rescue teams, including two Cheetah helicopters and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel, many were saved.

As per reports, the tragedy struck on June 3, as the group was descending from Sahastra Tal peak. At around 3:30 pm, a whiteout was caused by a blizzard that led to the trekkers losing visibility, said KMA secretary Srivatsa.

Wildfires are going out of control in India's Uttarakhand state. Frequent fires are razing Uttarakhand forests as temperatures rise in the region leading to long dry spells. India's Supreme Court has pulled up Uttarakhand government, seeking report on wildfires. Why are Uttarakhand fires getting out of hand each year?

India's Supreme Court on Wednesday (May 15) slammed the Uttarakhand government over its "lackadaisical" approach while tacking raging forest fires in the state.

The top court was hearing a plea on the forest fires in the northern state. A Forest Department bulletin revealed that the fires have affected more than 1,437 hectares of green cover since November.

A bench of Justices BR Gavai, SVN Bhatti and Sandeep Mehta said that the State's approach to controlling forest fires was not up to the mark.

The Court asked the counsel, who appeared for Uttarakhand, "Why have you employed the forest fire staff on election duty amidst fire?"

According to a state official, the election duty was over and the Chief Secretary had directed them not to put any official on poll duty.

"It's a sorry state of affairs. You are only making excuses," the bench responded.

The top court also raised the matter of a huge vacancy in the state's forest department, stating that it must be handled.

"There is a huge fire and 40 per cent of the forest is under fire. This is undoused," advocate Parmeshwar told the court.

The counsel for Uttarakhand responded to the claim, stating that there were no new fires. Notably, the recent rains in several sections of the state gave much-needed relief from forest fires. Local reports said that there were no new incidents reported in the last few days.

The top court also demanded an explanation from the state administration as to why funds provided by the central last year were not fully utilised.

The government counsel claimed that the state government had not received funds from the Centre to fight the forest fire.

He said, "Funding is a huge issue now. Had there been proper funding, the situation would have been better. The Centre has to chip in to help the state."
