US Election 2024: Donald Trump Rallies In Hurricane-Hit North Carolina

Liz Cheney, a former US Republican congresswoman, has now been backing Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris for the November 5 elections and has stressed that the Republican women can vote for Harris, and they don’t need to tell anyone about it.

Cheney, who has been a longtime opponent of abortion rights, condemned bans imposed by Republicans on the procedure.

Speaking during three joint events with Vice President Harris in three swing states, Cheney, 58, said that only Harris had the compassion to deal with the issue.

Earlier, she also celebrated the demise of Roe v. Wade and warned women aren’t getting needed reproductive health care after the Supreme Court’s momentous 2022 decision.

She again made it clear that she still opposes abortion, adding, “I have been very troubled, deeply troubled by what I have watched happen in so many states. I have been troubled by the extent to which you have women who, as the vice president said, in some cases, have died, who can’t get medical treatment that they need because providers are worried about criminal liability.”

Cheney said, “We are facing a situation today where I think that it’s an untenable one" and America needs a president “who understands how important compassion is, who understands that these shouldn’t be political issues, that we ought to be able to have these discussions and say, ‘You know what? Even if you are pro-life, as I am, I do not believe, for example, that the state of Texas ought to have the right, as they’re currently suing to do, to get access to women’s medical records."

Liz Cheney urges Republican women to side with Harris in US elections over abortion rights

An American Civil Liberties Union lawyer will make history in December as the first openly transgender attorney to argue before the US Supreme Court while opposing Tennessee's Republican-backed law banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors.

The ACLU's Chase Strangio, 41, represents a group of transgender people who pursued a lawsuit challenging the measure that prohibits medical treatment, including hormone therapy and surgeries, for minors experiencing gender dysphoria.

In one of the most consequential cases of the court's current nine-month term, the nine justices will hear arguments on Dec. 4 in an appeal by President Joe Biden's administration of a lower court's decision upholding Tennessee's ban.

The Supreme Court on Monday ordered that the argument time for the ban's challengers be divided between the Justice Department and attorneys representing the original plaintiffs who sued the state. Strangio will present the arguments for these plaintiffs at the lectern in the ornate courtroom.

ACLU Legal Director Cecillia Wang called Strangio the leading US legal expert on transgender rights.

"He brings to the lectern not only brilliant constitutional lawyering but also the tenacity and heart of a civil rights champion," Wang said.

Strangio, who joined the ACLU in 2013, is the co-director of its LGBTQ & HIV Project, helping the organisation oppose state laws targeting transgender people, including 12 legal challenges against the laws like the one at issue before the Supreme Court.

Strangio has represented people in high-profile cases, including transgender student Gavin Grimm, who fought a Virginia school board to use the bathroom corresponding with his gender identity, and Chelsea Manning, a transgender former US soldier who served time in prison for leaking classified documents.

According to the Justice Department, Tennessee is one of 22 states that have passed measures targeting medical interventions for adolescents with gender dysphoria. That is the clinical diagnosis for significant distress that can result from an incongruence between a person's gender identity and the sex they were assigned at birth.

Lawmakers supporting the restrictions have called the treatments experimental and potentially harmful. Medical associations, noting that gender dysphoria is associated with higher rates of suicide, have said gender-affirming care can be life-saving and that long-term studies show its effectiveness.

Several plaintiffs—including two transgender boys, a transgender girl, and their parents—sued in Tennessee to defend the treatments they have said improved their happiness and well-being. The Justice Department intervened in the lawsuit to also challenge the law.

The challengers contend that banning care for transgender youth violates the U.S. Constitution's 14th Amendment promise of equal protection by discriminating against these adolescents based on sex and transgender status.

In a written filing, the Justice Department highlighted that one of the law's "declared purposes is to enforce gender conformity and discourage adolescents from identifying as transgender."

The state asked the Supreme Court to let the law stand.

"Tennessee lawfully exercised its power to regulate medicine by protecting minors from risky, unproven gender-transition interventions," Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti said in a filing.

A federal judge blocked the law in Tennessee in 2023, finding that it likely violates the 14th Amendment. In a 2-1 decision in 2023, the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the judge's preliminary injunction.

The Supreme Court has dealt with several cases in the past decade on LGBT rights. In 2015, it legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. In 2020, it ruled that a landmark federal law forbidding workplace discrimination protects gay and transgender employees. In 2023, it decided in a case from Washington state that the constitutional right to free speech allows certain businesses to refuse to provide services for same-sex weddings.

Former United States president and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his Democratic rival and current Vice President Kamala Harris are on a close edge ahead of the US presidential elections, with both the candidates holding rallies and addressing events across the country. The question on everyone’s mind is whether America will get its first woman president or a second Trump term. Trump and Harris both made several claims attacking each other at several campaign rallies and speeches. However, as the claims went through fact-checking, it was revealed some of the statements made by them were false, or only partially true. The two candidates faced off against each other during the 90-minute debate, held at Philadelphia's National Constitution Center on September 11, with both focusing on some of the pressing issues which concern the American voters. Later, Trump at a Fox News town hall event on Tuesday told several lies. A CNN fact check revealed that he made around 19 false claims in a one-hour interview. Also read: US media suggests Trump’s lead in betting markets could be ‘manufactured’ Meanwhile, Harris also made six statements that were false, inaccurate, or lacking context, in one of her speeches. Donald Trump’s claims ‘Inflation during Biden’s tenure worst in our nation's history’ “We had the worst – they say it’s in 48 years I say ever. We had the worst inflation in the history of our country,” Trump said. However, the claim made by him is ‘false’ according to CNN fact check. While it is true that early in Joe Biden’s presidency, the annual inflation rate peaked at roughly nine per cent (June of 2022), however, that is not the highest it has ever been. In the immediate aftermath of World War II and during the oil embargo and shortages of the late '70s and early 1980s, the inflation rate peaked at 14.5 per cent, as per ABC News. ‘Sex change operations on minors’ Trump claimed, “Kamala supports states being able to take minor children and perform sex-change operations on them without their parents’ consent.” Watch | US Elections: Trump, Harris Try To Sway Voters To Balance The Elections × However, this was false as surgical procedures for minor children receiving gender-affirming care require parental consent. Moreover, she has not said she supports changing state laws, the New York Times reported. ‘Haitian migrants eating pets’ During the presidential debate between Trump and Harris in September, the former US president claimed that the Haitian migrants are “eating the pets of the people that live there”. When he was fact-checked by the debate moderator, Trump said that he saw people on television who said “their dog was eaten by the people that went there.” An Ohio city spokesperson told ABC News that there have been "no credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals in the immigrant community,” terming Trump’s claims as false once again. ‘Every single job taken by a migrant worker’ In yet another claim made about the migrants, Trump said that almost every job was taken by them. “You know, the jobs, almost every single job, was taken by a migrant worker.” However, the number of native-born workers and foreign-born workers has both increased by millions in the US, under the Biden administration. Kamala Harris’ claims ‘Trump intends to cut Social Security and Medicare’ In one of her speeches from September, Harris claimed that Trump “intends to cut Social Security and Medicare.” However, during his 2024 presidential campaign, the former US president has repeatedly said that he would not cut Social Security and Medicare, though he had earlier, shown brief and vague support for such proposals, making Harris’ claims 'misleading'. ‘Goldman Sachs report saying Harris’s plan would grow economy, while Trumps’ plan would shrink’ Harris said, “In fact, independent economists like Goldman Sachs have said my plan would grow our economy and his plan would shrink the economy, reignite inflation, and send us into a recession by the middle of next year.” The claim was labelled as “exaggerating” as the Goldman Sachs analysis did show that Harris’ victory in November polls would lead to a “very slight boost” to economic growth, while a Trump’s victory, regardless of what happens in Congress, would cause growth to slow in 2025. But Goldman's chief executive said “A lot more has been made of this than should be,” given the report showed a mere “two-tenth of 1 percent” difference between the two cases. Trump ‘intends to end the Affordable Care Act’ Harris said, “On top of all of this, Donald Trump intends to end the Affordable Care Act.” According to the New York Times fact check, Trump has made vague and contradictory statements about his health care plan, and said that he would not end it but replace it only with “something better and less expensive.” (With inputs from agencies)
