Movie On Trump Stirs Controversy

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, attention turns to the crucial battleground states that will likely decide the outcome.

These states, characterised by their swing voting histories and electoral significance, hold the power to tip the balance in favour of either Democratic nominee Kamala Harris or Republican nominee Donald Trump.

What are the Battleground States?

Battleground states are the states where the margin of victory between the two major parties is historically narrow, making them highly contested and critical to winning the presidency. These states typically have:

1. Competitive voting demographics
2. High electoral vote values
3. Significant campaign spending and resource allocation

2024 Battleground States

Based on past election trends, polling data, and demographic shifts, the following states are expected to be battlegrounds in 2024:

1. Pennsylvania (20 electoral votes): A perennial swing state, Pennsylvania has voted Democratic in recent presidential elections but remains competitive.
2. Michigan (16 electoral votes): Michigan's diverse electorate and union influence make it a prized battleground.
3. Wisconsin (10 electoral votes): Wisconsin's swing-voting history and proximity to the Midwest make it a key target.
4. Arizona (11 electoral votes): Arizona's growing Hispanic population and shifting demographics have turned it into a battleground.
5. Georgia (16 electoral votes): Georgia's increasingly diverse electorate and suburban swing voters make it a crucial state.
6. North Carolina (15 electoral votes): North Carolina's mix of urban and rural areas creates a competitive landscape.
7. Ohio (18 electoral votes): Ohio's bellwether status and significant electoral vote value make it a prized battleground.
8. Florida (29 electoral votes): Florida's diverse population and massive electoral vote haul make it a critical state.

Why These States Matter

Battleground states hold significant influence over the election outcome due to:

1. Electoral Vote Allocation: These states possess substantial electoral votes, accounting for over 130 of the 270 needed to win.
2. Campaign Resource Allocation: Candidates will focus resources, including advertising and grassroots efforts, on these states.
3. Swing Voter Dynamics: Battleground states often have high proportions of swing voters, whose decisions can swing the election.

Conclusion

With less than three weeks to Election Day, the presidential race remains neck and neck. Recent swing state polls show Donald Trump leading Kamala Harris in Georgia and Arizona, while Harris holds slim advantages in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Nevada's outcome is mixed. With margins razor-thin, these states are truly up for grabs. The contest's outcome will hinge on which candidate mobilizes their base most effectively.

Advanced Semiconductor Materials Lithography Holdings (ASML), one of the world’s leading suppliers of semiconductor equipment, has revised its 2025 sales forecast, revealing that US export restrictions on chip technology are expected to significantly impact its sales to China.

This comes as geopolitical tensions between the US and China continue to affect the global semiconductor market, with ASML now anticipating a decline in revenue from its Chinese customers over the next year as detailed in a report by CNBC.

US restrictions taking a toll

The US government's ongoing efforts to limit China’s access to advanced semiconductor technology have hit one of the world's most crucial industries the report further elaborated. ASML, a key player in supplying lithography machines used to manufacture cutting-edge chips, is directly feeling the pinch. The Dutch company, which has already faced restrictions on its most advanced extreme ultraviolet (EUV) machines, said its future sales in China are set to decline due to these curbs.

Roger Dassen, ASML’s chief financial officer, said on a call with analysts Wednesday that the company expects China sales to drop next year, citing U.S. export restrictions as one of the reasons.

“We all read newspapers, right? We all see that there is speculation around around export control,” Dassen said in response to an analyst question on why the company sees revenue in China slumping next year. “That is a driver for us to take a more cautious view on the China sales.”

Impact on the semiconductor industry

The CNBC report further stated that, last year ASML sourced 29 per cent of its sales from China. It now expects that contribution from China to drop to around 20 per cent of its total revenue in 2025.

Sales to China grew dramatically in the first three quarters of 2024 as customers scrambled to buy ASML’s DUV machines in bulk head of U.S. and Dutch export restrictions.

In the company’s second-quarter 2024 earnings presentation, ASML said that it sourced as much as 49 per cent of its sales from China.

“China is a very important market for ASML,” Chris Miller, assistant professor of international history at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and author of the book “Chip War,” told CNBC in emailed comments. “Most of this revenue is from older-generation chipmaking tools.”

Ironically, restrictions on exports of DUV machines to China “have probably helped ASML on net, because China has accelerated purchases of older generation DUV tools as a result,” Miller added.

Now, ASML is expecting a drop-off in sales to China as a result of US trade restrictions. The firm expects China to return to taking up a smaller share of its overall global sales in 2025, CFO Dassen said in a transcript of a video interview Tuesday.

“We do see China trending towards more historically normal percentages in our business,” Dassen said. “So we expect China to come in at around 20 per cent of our total revenue for next year. Which would also be in line with its representation in our backlog.”

Take of Analysts

Analysts at Bank of America said the firm faces a “sharp decline in China revenues.” They added that ASML’s forecast of China accounting for around 20 per cent of its revenue in 2025, implies a 48 per cent revenue decline year-over-year, more severe than the 3 per cent they had anticipated.

Hence, as the US-China relationship goes through a difficult time, with the US putting in place chip import curbs investors will keenly follow these developments and how things evolve between the two biggest economies in the world. These developments will immensely help aspirational investors in taking better investment decisions in the future.

The US has been quite vocal about its continuous support for Israel following the Oct 7 attack. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been firm in supporting Israel’s right to defend itself while also expressing concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The US-Israel alliance has dwelled upon the fact that Israel must take action to protect its citizens. The Biden administration has been committed to continuous military support to ensure Israel’s right to security. However, even after a year now, the situation in Gaza still intensifies with rising civilian casualties on a daily basis.

But the question arises: Will this support affect the vote bank for Democrats among Arab Americans?

Many feel that the Biden administration failed to make an agreement on both sides and call for a ceasefire. This has sparked protests all over the world, particularly amongst Muslim countries, who have expressed anger and believe that the administration should take a stronger stand on humanitarian aid for people in war-battered Gaza.

In recent weeks, the US Vice President and Democrats have been meeting with Arab and Muslim leaders in Michigan. During her campaign rally in Michigan, Harris was even asked to take a step back from Biden’s Israel policy and urge for a ceasefire.

In the past, Arab Americans were a majority voting bank for Democrats, especially after 9/11 and because of Trump’s anti-Muslim dialogues. Traditionally, the total voter turnout of Arab Americans has been over 80 per cent. However, this year only 63 per cent of the members of the Arab community are looking forward to the elections next month.

Harris seems to be concerned about Arab voters in Michigan. Some community leaders have also mentioned that the majority of Arab Americans might withhold their support for Democrats in the 2024 elections unless some changes are made in the policies.

According to Swing State Poll 2024- Muslims and Arabs in Michigan play an important role in changing the whole outcome of the US Presidential Elections. Their main concern revolves around the lack of administration decision-making in calling for an immediate ceasefire and the constant supply of military aid to Israel amid endless casualties. A recent poll by Arab Americans Institute shows that the Democrats are hitting an all-time low of 23 per cent after October 7.

Also, voters of the Arab community are preferring Republicans to take over the next Congress. This can have a huge impact, as the community played an important role in contributing to Biden’s victory in 2020.

Harris is working towards connecting with the larger Muslim and Arab citizens. The effort, however, comes as tension between Israel and Lebanon has been rising.

Many progressive Democrats have also criticised the administration over human rights issues and have been pressuring the Biden administration for de-escalation and ebsuring humanitarian aid supply to the people in Gaza. Many vocal figures, like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, have questioned the policies on the conflict.

This has created a divide within the party, with some supporting the stance while others being critical of it. With days passing by, the crisis in Gaza remains unresolved even as both Harris and Biden have been trying to strike a balance between the two sides.

Is Kamala Harris losing Arab-American support in coming US elections?

The US added that the amount of aid delivered to Gaza has dropped more than 50 per cent since this spring, adding that the quantity delivered in September "was the lowest of any month during the past year".

The letter read that the US state and defence departments, under American law, “must continually assess” Israel’s adherence to its assurances made earlier this year that it would not restrict aid flows into the Palestinian enclave.

“We are particularly concerned that recent actions by the Israeli government – including halting commercial imports, denying or impeding nearly 90 percent of humanitarian movements between northern and southern Gaza in September, continuing burdensome and excessive dual-use restrictions, and instituting new vetting and onerous liability and customs requirements for humanitarian staff and shipments – together with increased lawlessness and looting – are contributing to an accelerated deterioration in the conditions in Gaza,” the letter by Blinken and Austin said, according to CNN.
