US Presidential Election 2024: Illegal Immigrants Are Bringing "Bad Genes" Into US: Trump

A group of 14 US states on Tuesday filed lawsuits accusing TikTok of ensnaring young users with addictive features, then harming their minds and violating their privacy.

The wave of local court lawsuits demanding corrective measures and financial penalties comes as the popular video-snippet-sharing app faces a ban in the United States if it remains owned by China-based ByteDance.

"Our investigation has revealed that TikTok cultivates social media addiction to boost corporate profits," California Attorney General Rob Bonta said in a news release issued jointly with officials from other states.

"TikTok intentionally targets children because they know kids do not yet have the defenses or capacity to create healthy boundaries around addictive content."

Bonta contended that features such as beauty filters, endless scrolling, autoplay videos, and "likes" exploit youthful curiosity and lack of willpower to stop.

TikTok then hits young users with money-making ads, the lawsuits argue.

TikTok called the claims inaccurate and misleading.

"We've endeavored to work with the Attorneys General for over two years, and it is incredibly disappointing they have taken this step rather than work with us on constructive solutions to industry-wide challenges," TikTok spokesman Michael Hughes said in response to an AFP inquiry.

Hughes cited what he said were TikTok safeguards that include booting users suspected of being younger than 13, default screen time limits, and privacy settings for minors using the app.

"Young people are struggling with their mental health because of addictive social media platforms like TikTok," said New York Attorney General Letitia James.

"TikTok claims that their platform is safe for young people, but that is far from true," she added.

TikTok is battling the US ban threat in a federal appeals court, arguing that it violates free speech rights.

A law poised to take effect early next year requires the app to divest from its Chinese ownership or be banned in the United States.

The US government alleges that TikTok allows Beijing to collect data and spy on users. It also says TikTok is a conduit to spread propaganda. China and the company strongly deny these claims.

TikTok has until January to find a buyer or face the ban, which would upend the social media business and rile many of the app's 170 million US users.

Democratic presidential nominee and United States Vice President Kamala Harris refused to call Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a close ally during an interview with American broadcaster CBS, covering wide-ranging issues, aired on Monday (Oct 7).

As the presidential race between Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Harris tightens ahead of the November elections, the VP has increased her media presence and recently appeared for podcasts, talk radio, a battleground state town hall, daytime television, and late-night shows.

Former United States President Barack Obama has planned to begin a 27-day campaign sprint for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris next week in Pennsylvania, reported the American media citing an adviser to Harris' campaign, on Friday (Oct 4).

Obama will hold his first event in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania next Thursday and will be holding more events across electoral battlegrounds in the upcoming weeks ahead of the November elections.

The former US president, along with his wife Michelle, is one of the party's most popular figures and is reportedly seeking to help Harris in every way possible.

“President Obama believes the stakes of this election could not be more consequential and that is why he is doing everything he can to help elect Vice President Harris, Governor Walz and Democrats across the country,” said Eric Schultz, a senior Obama adviser.

Moreover, an Obama aide said that the former president also intends to help Democrats by recording candidate-specific advertisements and lending his name to email solicitations for campaign cash, including for down-ballot races.

Last month, he also held a $4 million fundraiser for Harris in Los Angeles.

According to Obama's office, he has also cut three ads for Senate candidates, in Michigan, Maryland, and Florida.

The 2024 election, in Obama’s view, is an “all hands on deck” moment, aides have said.

“I wish I could give you a four- or five-point plan as to how we’re going to win this election. Truthfully, the plan is we’re going to push through it,” he said during the California fundraising event, according to excerpts from his office.

Notably, the California fundraising event was Obama's first solo fundraising appearance for Harris since she secured the Democratic nomination.

Barack Obama to hold 27-day campaign sprint for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris

The US has acknowledged claims made by Pakistan Peoples' Party (PPP) Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on accusations of alleged mismanagement of USD 400 million received by Pakistan in loans and aid from the World Bank, meant for flood relief actions in the country.

According to Ary News, Bilawal accused the central government of Pakistan of appropriating funds that were originally intended for flood victims and utilising them for other unrelated projects.

Bilawal condemned the government for its inability to construct a single house for flood victims in recent years and demanded that the aid be redirected to its intended purpose.

Responding to the allegations, US State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller, in a press briefing on October 2, emphasised that the United States was closely monitoring the situation. He said, "We take this matter very seriously, not just in Pakistan but also wherever American taxpayer dollars are used, and where urgent humanitarian interests are at stake".

Miller explained that both the State Department and USAID follow strict protocols to monitor and evaluate the use of foreign aid given by the country to other countries in need. This is done to ensure transparency and accountability.

"We halt assistance when we observe any misdirection or misuse of funds," he added, indicating potential concerns over the misuse of flood relief resources in Pakistan.

Pakistan has been facing a climate crisis in recent years. These extreme weather events include heatwaves, cyclones, floods and glacier melting that resulted in the catastrophic 2022 floods. The Climate Risk Index has included Pakistan in the top 10 most vulnerable countries to climate change.

Ary News reported that the allegations by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and the US' swift acknowledgement of the situation have heightened the attention on the Pakistan government's handling of international aid, especially that coming for humanitarian efforts into the country.

According to Asian Development Bank, climatic changes are expected to have wide-ranging impacts on Pakistan, affecting agricultural productivity, water availability, and increased frequency of extreme climatic events. These risks have been translated into economic crises, damaging lives and threatening the livelihoods of Pakistani citizens.

The mismanagement of funds accusation makes matters worse for PM of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif as a trust deficit expressed through these allegations will make it tougher for the country to secure aid, grants and loans from organisations and other countries as Pakistan continues to reel under severe economic stress.

U.S. Elections: What's Next For Political Betting In The US?

An American citizen stuck in Lebanon stressed that she does not feel that she matters to the United States government amid Israeli attacks, Al Jazeera reported.

Karam, a US citizen, who chose to be identified by her nickname out of fear of retaliation, said that she feels as if she does not matter to the US.

Tensions between Israel and Lebanon have heightened after Israel carried out device attacks targeting Hezbollah, using pagers and walkie-talkies, and following that killed Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in a targeted airstrike.

Karam, on Monday, called the US embassy in Beirut for help. However, she said that she was told to find a way out of the country by herself.

She compared it to the Hamas October 7 attack in Israel, and how the US State Department swiftly chartered special flights and a ship to evacuate American citizens in Israel.

“Americans of Lebanese descent have been treated as lesser US citizens than Israeli US citizens. It is as if we don’t exist,” Karam told Al Jazeera.

Karam is from south Lebanon and is currently residing in the mountainous area east of Beirut, which has largely been spared from Israeli attacks. However, she said she is afraid of moving within the country or visiting her son in Beirut in the fear that Israel can bomb anywhere at any moment.

“Israel says they are following Hezbollah, but they are dropping bombs everywhere,” Karam said. “The innocent people of the south and Dahiyeh have paid the price. And we don’t know how long the people will be displaced," she added.

The administration of US President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday that it contracted its first flight to evacuate US citizens from Beirut to Istanbul, nine days after Israel started its offensive in Lebanon.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said the flight carried 100 US citizens – a fraction of the nearly 6,000 Americans who have contacted the US embassy for information and help.

Miller added that the US administration is hoping to organise more flights, however, saying that he would not announce them because they may not materialise “for whatever reason”.

“We have been working to make seats available or to find seats available on existing commercial flights,” he said.

Since all foreign airlines have cancelled their flights to Lebanon, Middle East Airlines (MEA) is not the only company flying out of the international airport in Beirut.

MEA offers nearly 30 flights daily to destinations in Europe and the Middle East, which is far short of the growing demands of people looking to leave Lebanon. Moreover, prices have also hiked due to the crisis.
