New York City witnessed a historic moment on January 16 as it finally saw significant snowfall after a staggering 700 days. The event marked the conclusion of an exceptional period characterised by the absence of substantial snow, with Central Park reporting a layer of snow that broke the previous record set in 1998.

Breaking the 400-day record

The snowless span began after Central Park recorded 1.6 inches of snow on February 13, 2022. The New York Times reported that the record-breaking 400-day streak without considerable snowfall was officially shattered.

The National Weather Service confirmed an inch of snowfall at Central Park since midnight on January 16, with a total of 1.4 inches since the storm's onset on Monday (Jan 15).

This long-awaited snowfall brought relief to residents and added a picturesque layer to the iconic landscapes of the city.

While New York City experienced a prolonged absence of notable snow, other areas in the state, such as Buffalo, faced more severe snow conditions. The discrepancy highlights the diverse and evolving nature of weather patterns, influenced in part by the ongoing effects of climate change.

Residents across various parts of the city, including Brooklyn, found themselves engaged in the task of clearing sidewalks following the snowfall over the long weekend.

The event also led to minor disruptions in public transport and prompted school closures in the northern suburbs, underscoring the practical implications of the city's return to snowy conditions.

Unusual snow patterns extend globally

Beyond New York City, unusual snow patterns have been observed globally. In India, regions accustomed to heavy snowfall during the winter season, such as Kashmir, Ladakh, Manali, and Shimla, have experienced an unexpected lack of snow during "Chilla-i-Kalan" the traditional intense cold period.

Weather forecasts predict dry conditions until January 21, leaving residents and weather experts alike puzzled by the deviation from the usual snowy conditions during Christmas and New Year's Eve.

In a shocking incident in the US state of Ohio, a 17-month-old toddler was admitted to the ICU after sustaining burns during a police raid where officers deployed flash-bang devices. The mayor of the city of Elyria has since ordered an investigation into the incident after a woman alleged that police officers who raided her home had the wrong address.

‘It’s the wrong house’

The police and the resident have given conflicting accounts of what happened on January 10, during the raid on a residence in the 300 block of Parmely Avenue.

In a statement, on Friday (Jan 12) the Ohio police said that they executed a search warrant at the correct address as part of a criminal investigation and the child did not “sustain any apparent, visible injuries.”

However, the toddler’s mother Courtney Price told NBC News that audio from her security camera says otherwise. In the audio shared with the media, on Tuesday (Jan 16) someone can be heard saying, “It’s the wrong house.”

It was not immediately clear who made the remark as the police deployed flashbangs also known as stun grenades – a device that produces a bright flash and a loud noise to stun or disorient people without causing serious injury.

The police broke a window and deployed the device near her 17-month-old son Waylon who was already on a ventilator. “All I seen was lights flashing and smoke coming into the house,” she told CBS News.

“I didn’t know what to do because there was guns pointed at me. I wanted to run to him, but I knew if I ran to him...they could’ve shot,” Price added. According to media reports, Courtney and her son were the only ones home at the time of the raid.

“I kept screaming, ‘My baby, my baby is on a ventilator. My baby’s in here’,” Price said.

Speaking to the local media, Reida Jennings, who rented the house to the Price family said the mother and her son were staying with her as Waylon waited for his surgery for a heart defect.

“The baby is now in the ICU. He’s got burns all over him, inside of his lungs are burned,” Jennings told WJW.

She said that the Ring camera footage showed that the flashbang hit Waylon and alleged that the police let the toddler “lay there for about 35 to 45 minutes in the smoke.”

‘Serious and disturbing’

Elyria Mayor Kevin Brubaker called the incident “serious and disturbing.” He added, “The allegations against our police department are extreme and deeply concerning…I have ordered a complete review of the incident and requested all information be released to the public as soon as possible.”

The mayor’s office released over two hours of footage from the body cams worn by eight officers, on Tuesday (Jan 16).

Price told WOIO that Waylon had been diagnosed with chemical pneumonitis after the raid which she said was caused due to the chemicals released by the flash-bangs.

The Elyria Police Department has since denied the allegations. “Any allegation suggesting the child was exposed to chemical agents, lack of medical attention or negligence is not true,” said the police in a statement.

Jennings told WOIO that the family plans to take legal action against the police department.

As we peer into the future of 2100, the landscape of nearly 30,000 cities in the United States may undergo substantial transformations. A recent study predicts that almost half of these cities will experience population decline, losing between 12 to 23 per cent of their residents by the century's end.

These changes, influenced by both climate-driven natural forces and human responses, pose significant challenges that extend beyond city boundaries, according to ScienceAlert.

From sprawling to ageing communities

The study suggests that the cities of the future are more likely to witness shifts in population dynamics, evolving into fractured, thinning, or sprawling communities.

While outright abandonment is not the envisioned outcome, the researchers caution that unless local governments and town planners adapt to the evolving needs of residents, these transformations may lead to unprecedented challenges.

The anticipated decline in population raises concerns about the disruption of fundamental services such as transit, clean water, electricity, and internet access.

As cities shrink and populations age, the potential consequences include grocery store closures, resulting in food deserts, and neglected infrastructure in dwindling towns, leaving communities without essential resources, reminiscent of the water crisis in Jackson, Mississippi, in 2021.

Originally focussing on transportation challenges in Illinois, the researchers expanded their analysis to encompass all 50 states. Drawing from US census data and climate scenarios, the study paints a comprehensive picture of the potential future of cities, challenging the conventional focus on larger urban centres.

Currently, 43 per cent of US cities are losing residents, a figure that could rise to 64 per cent by 2100, depending on climate scenarios.

Projections indicate that the Northeast and Midwest regions are likely to witness the most depopulating cities. Even states like Texas and Utah, currently experiencing growth, may encounter significant population loss in certain cities by 2100.

National Nothing Day: History

National Nothing Day was first proposed by columnist Harold Pullman Coffin in 1972. Coffin believed that there should be a day dedicated to quiet contemplation and to take a break from the usual hustle of daily life.
The importance of doing nothing

In a world driven by constant connectivity and a never-ending stream of information, the idea of doing nothing might sound strange. However, numerous studies highlight the benefits of downtime for mental health. Taking a break can reduce stress, increase creativity and improve overall well-being.

Ways to celebrate National Nothing Day

1. Unplug and Disconnect: Turn off your electronic devices for a few hours and enjoy the peace. Disconnecting from technology allows you to focus on the present moment.

2. Read Book: Pick up a book that you always wanted to read but didn't get the time. National Nothing Day is the perfect occasion to lose yourself in a good story.

3. Meditation and Mindfulness: Engage in meditation or mindfulness exercises. Take a few moments to focus on your breath, clear your mind and appreciate the simplicity of the present.

4. Nature Walks: Spend time outdoors, take a leisurely walk and soak in the beauty of nature. National Nothing Day coincides with a time of the year when winter landscapes can be particularly serene.

5. Nap Time: Allow yourself the luxury of a short nap. A brief rest can rejuvenate your mind and body, leaving you more alert and focused afterwards.

Embracing nothing as something

While National Nothing Day might seem like a whimsical concept, its underlying message is a reminder that doing nothing isn't a waste of time but a valuable aspect of a balanced and healthy life. Taking a break from the chaos of everyday life can lead to increased mindfulness, improved mental clarity and a deeper appreciation for the simplicity of the moment.

So, take a step back, breathe and celebrate the beauty of nothingness – a day dedicated to doing nothing and engaging in self-care activities.
