Even as thousands died to Israeli retaliatory fire on Gaza, the United States, as per a damning report, made over 100 weapons sales to Israel, including thousands of bombs, since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.&nbsp;

The war which began on Oct 7 with militant group Hamas'&nbsp;cross-border attack on Israel has to date claimed around 31,200 lives — 1,200 Israelis that were killed in the initial Hamas attack and around 30,000 Palestinians.

<h2>US' clandestine weapon sales to Israel</h2>

As per a Washington Post report, since the start of the Gaza war, the US has made over 100 weapon&nbsp;sales to Israel. These transactions, however, escaped congressional approval due to a loophole — their individual amounts were below the threshold requiring such oversight.

This revelation comes as the Biden administration has increasingly been publicly critical of Israel's military operations in Gaza and its limited humanitarian aid access.

Apparently, even as America voiced humanitarian concerns, it has quietly continued to provide substantial munitions to replace the tens and thousands of bombs dropped on the Gaza Strip.

As per the Washington Post report, administration officials were recently informed of these sales via a classified briefing.&nbsp;

Only a few details of these sales are known, because to keep them small, their contents were kept secret. Reportedly, these sales included precision-guided munitions, small-diameter bombs, bunker busters, small arms, and other lethal aid.

<h2>US Arms Export Control Law</h2>

As per The Guardian, the Arms Export Control Act allows exceptions for arms sales to close allies, with a limit of $25 million for "major defence equipment" and $100 million for other "defence articles" like bombs.&nbsp;

Ari Tolany, director of the security assistance monitor at the Center for International Policy, a think tank, criticised this loophole as an attempt to avoid transparency and accountability.

"This doesn’t just seem like an attempt to avoid technical compliance with US arms export law, it’s an extremely troubling way to avoid transparency and accountability on a high-profile issue," she said.

The Biden administration's actions compare to those of the Trump administration, which as per findings of the State Department Office of the Inspector General made thousands of below-threshold arms transfers to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, totalling an estimated $11.2 billion.

In exploiting this loophole, "They're very much borrowing from the Trump playbook to dodge congressional oversight," said Tolany.

These clandestine sales are besides the three major military sales publicly disclosed since the conflict's onset: $320 million worth of precision bomb kits in November and 14,000 tank shells valued at $106 million. Furthermore, $147.5 million was allocated for fuses and other components essential for the production of 155&nbsp;mm artillery shells in December.&nbsp;

Notably, the deliveries in December, which included tank and artillery shells, also evaded congressional scrutiny by being executed under emergency authority.&nbsp;

On Monday (Mar 4), Matthew Miller, the State Department spokesperson in a press briefing, said, "We continue to support Israel’s campaign to ensure that the attacks of 7 October cannot be repeated. We have provided military assistance to Israel because it is consistent with that goal."

"We support Israel’s legitimate military campaign consistent with international humanitarian law."

US exploited 'loophole' to quietly sell weapons to Israel amidst Gaza bloodshed: Report

The United States Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, on Wednesday (Mar 6) said he would support his party’s frontrunner Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential election. This comes more than three years after the Senator for the US state of Kentucky blamed the former president for the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.&nbsp;

<h2>‘He will have my support’</h2>

“It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee for President of the United States,” said McConnell&nbsp;in a statement.&nbsp;

He added, “It should come as no surprise that as nominee, he will have my support.” The Senate minority leader also highlighted the “great things” he and Trump had accomplished during his presidency, including picking three conservative justices for the Supreme Court.

A super yacht which was seized from a sanctioned Russian oligarch has cost the American taxpayers a total of $20 million and nearly $1 million per month to maintain, recent court filings showed. This comes as the war in Ukraine rages on and Kyiv’s Western allies, including the United States, have imposed thousands of sanctions against Russia in response.

<h2>About the Russian oligarch’s superyacht</h2>

The US Department of Justice has sought permission to sell the 348-foot yacht called Amadea which was seized in 2022. Estimated at a price of&nbsp;around $300 million, the superyacht was&nbsp;allegedly owned by Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov.&nbsp;

Kerimov was sanctioned by the US Treasury Department in 2014 and again in 2018 in response to Russia’s activities in Syria and Ukraine.&nbsp;

The US government has sought to sell the mega-yacht, which is currently docked in San Diego, for $230 million due to the “excessive costs” of the maintenance and crew which can be as high as $922,000 a month.&nbsp;

According to the court documents, monthly costs for Amadea include $600,000 per month in running costs; $360,000 for the crew; $75,000 for fuel; and $165,000 for maintenance.&nbsp;

The ship also requires an additional $144,000 in insurance and the occasional one-off fees to cover dry docking expenses which add another $178,000 to the monthly bill.&nbsp;

“It is excessive for taxpayers to pay nearly a million dollars per month to maintain the Amadea when these expenses could be reduced to zero through sale,” the US prosecutors argued in the court filing.&nbsp;

In previous court filings, prosecutors have also said that these maintenance payments are essential to preserving the yacht’s value.

<h2>Battle over Amadea</h2>

The US government has tried to previously get rid of the yacht but the efforts to auction it have been challenged by Eduard Khudainatov, who led the Russian state oil and gas company Rosneft from 2010 to 2013.

Khudainatov who has claimed ownership of the Amadea said that it cannot be forfeited because he has not been sanctioned. However, in previous court filings, prosecutors have alleged that he is acting as the superyacht’s “straw owner” to disguise Kerimov’s role.&nbsp;

However, the Russian oligarch’s lawyers have argued that the motion to sell the vessel was “premature” and urged the judge to decline it till the court “determines whether the seizure was unconstitutional.”

The court battle over Amadea highlights the financial and legal challenges of the sanctions imposed by the US which also involves seizing and selling assets owned by Russian oligarchs. If the US government succeeds,&nbsp;they would likely eventually transfer sale proceeds to support Ukraine.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, last week suggested something similar saying that the EU should use profits from more than $200 billion of frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine’s war effort.

<h2>Trump and Biden rematch?</h2>

With Haley out of the race, a rematch between Trump and Biden is set to take place in November. It will be the first repeat US presidential race since 1956, but as historic as the race seems, it is the one that most Americans are not looking forward to.&nbsp;

Several polls conducted in recent months show that both Trump and Biden have low approval ratings among voters. The incumbent US president has cast his predecessor as an existential danger to American democracy.&nbsp;

In February, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that most Americans think Biden was too old to work in government, while half of the respondents said the same about Trump – who is around three years younger than his successor.&nbsp;

No regrets: Haley ends her White House bid "The time has now come to suspend my campaign. I said I wanted Americans to have their voices heard. I have done that. I have no regrets," said the former governor of South Carolina. She added, "Although I will no longer be a candidate, I will not stop using my voice for the things I believe in." Haley also congratulated the Republican frontrunner and her ex-boss but did not endorse him. "In all likelihood, Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee...I congratulate him and wish him well." Haley also said that it is up to Trump to "earn the votes of those in our party and beyond it who did not support him. And I hope he does that." After her speech, Haley’s spokesperson took to X to point out the difference between Trump's and Biden's reaction to her exit. A tale of two statements… https://t.co/g3gQes4YPs — Olivia PC (@olivia_pc) March 6, 2024 × The former president mocked his fellow Republican saying how the former South Carolina governor got "trounced" on Super Tuesday and called on her supporters to join him. Meanwhile, Biden's statement praised Haley saying that "it takes a lot of courage to run for President - that's especially true in today's Republican Party, where so few dare to speak the truth about Donald Trump." He also called on her supporters to join him and wrote, "I hope and believe we can find common ground." What happened on Super Tuesday? Haley's announcement about ending her White House bid came after Trump defeated her in all states except Vermont on Tuesday (Mar 5) which had already guaranteed the Republican frontrunner the party’s nomination. WATCH | Super Tuesday Polls: Biden & Trump to win nearly all primaries On Super Tuesday, 15 states held their primaries which account for more than a third of the overall GOP primary delegate count. The former US president won in 14 of the 15 states, including California and Texas, with most delegates. On Sunday (Mar 3), Haley had won the Washington DC Republican primary with 62.9 per cent of the vote, while Trump managed to garner around 33.2 per cent. While high on symbolism as the seat of US government, DC is nevertheless numerically insignificant. Also Read | Trump, Biden look set for possible presidential rematch after easy primary wins The former governor of South Carolina was the last remaining rival for the Republican nomination against the party’s frontrunner. She was also among the first Republican contenders to enter the race in February 2023 and while her win was said to be a long shot, Haley garnered attention for her standout debate performances, towards the end of the year. Trump and Biden rematch? With Haley out of the race, a rematch between Trump and Biden is set to take place in November. It will be the first repeat US presidential race since 1956, but as historic as the race seems, it is the one that most Americans are not looking forward to. Several polls conducted in recent months show that both Trump and Biden have low approval ratings among voters. The incumbent US president has cast his predecessor as an existential danger to American democracy. Also Read | Ukraine's first lady and Alexei Navalny's wife decline Jill Biden's invitation to State of the Union address Meanwhile, most voters are reportedly concerned about Biden’s age, as at 81, he is the oldest president in US history. In February, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that most Americans think Biden was too old to work in government, while half of the respondents said the same about Trump – who is around three years younger than his successor. Nikki Haley announces end of her US presidential campaign, paves way for Biden and Trump rematch

In the Gulf of Aden, a missile strike carried out by Yemen's Houthi rebels on the Barbados-flagged bulk carrier True Confidence resulted in the tragic death of two crew members, prompting survivors to abandon the vessel on Wednesday (March 6).

This marks the first fatal incident in the Houthi campaign, which escalated due to Israel's conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The attack adds to the ongoing disruptions on a vital maritime route connecting Asia and the Middle East to Europe.

The Houthi attacks, initiated in November, persist despite the U.S. airstrike campaign launched in January.

The True Confidence was reportedly hailed by individuals claiming to be the Yemeni military before the attack, and the Houthis, suspected of attempting vessel seizures, have been communicating with ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden over the radio.

Two U.S. officials, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the anti-ship ballistic missile attack resulted in two deaths and six injuries among the crew.

The Liberian-owned ship's full extent of damage is yet unclear, but the crew abandoned the vessel, deploying lifeboats.

The Houthis have not immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, and the motive for targeting the True Confidence remains unclear, although it was previously owned by Oaktree Capital Management, a Los Angeles-based fund specializing in vessel financing. Oaktree has declined to comment on the matter.

Since November, the rebels have consistently targeted vessels in the Red Sea and neighbouring waters due to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Among these ships are those carrying cargo destined for Iran, the primary supporter of the Houthis, as well as an aid ship later intended for territory under Houthi control.

Despite over a month and a half of airstrikes led by the U.S., the Houthi rebels have maintained their ability to carry out significant attacks.

These incidents include the recent assault on a fertiliser-laden cargo ship, the Rubymar, which ultimately sank on Saturday after drifting for several days, and the destruction of an American drone valued at tens of millions of dollars.

On Tuesday (March 6), a distinct Houthi assault reportedly aimed at the USS Carney, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer actively engaged in the American campaign against the rebels.

The attack on the Carney by the Houthis on Tuesday utilised bomb-laden drones and an anti-ship ballistic missile, as confirmed by the US&nbsp;military's Central Command.

In response, the US&nbsp;subsequently conducted an airstrike, successfully eliminating three anti-ship missiles and three drone boats carrying explosives, according to the Central Command.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack, which set the Greek-owned, Barbados-flagged ship True Confidence ablaze around 50 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen's port of Aden.

Donald Trump, vying for a Republican nomination for the November presidential elections, has once again displayed his dislike for&nbsp;migrants. On Monday (March 4), the former US president compared migrants to the character Hannibal Lecter from the movie "The Silence of the Lambs," and said many of them come from "insane asylums".

<h2>'Rough people' from 'mental institutions'</h2>

In a lengthy interview with Right Side Broadcasting Network, Trump said, "They're rough people, in many cases from jails, prisons, from mental institutions, insane asylums."

"You know, insane asylums, that’s 'Silence of the Lambs' stuff," he added.

"Hannibal Lecter, anybody know Hannibal Lecter?" he asked a doting audience at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.

"We don't want them in this country," stressed the 2024 presidential race hopeful.

In 'The Silence of the Lambs,' Hannibal Lecter is a deranged cannibal and a serial killer.

<h2>Dehumanising for votes</h2>

NBC News reports that Trump, whose campaign motto is "Make America Great Again", further dehumanised migrants by making fun of their languages, comparing them to alien languages from planet Mars.

"We don't even have teachers of some of these languages. Who would think that? We have languages that are, like, from, from the planet Mars?" asked Trump, before answering his own questions with "Nobody, nobody knows how to, you know, speak it."
&nbsp;
He also claimed that due to migrants there were no more sports in cities like New York.

"We have children that are no longer going to school. They're throwing them out of the park. There's no more Little Leagues, there's no more sports, there's no more life in New York and so many of these cities," he said.

Pouncing on this false statement, the Biden campaign on X posted a clip of the exchange which has earned Trump the mockery of netizens.

"Have the little leaguers been informed of this yet?," taunted one user, while another commented, "More like New York has ended Trump."
