Arizona, situated in the southwestern United States, has officially designated Pluto as its "state planet," despite the International Astronomical Union's decision in 2006 to reclassify Pluto as a "dwarf planet," and removing its status as an official planet.

According to The Arizona Daily Star, on March 29, Arizona governor Katie Hobbs signed a bill designating the "dwarf planet" Pluto as the "official state planet" of Arizona. When asked about Pluto's classification as a full-fledged planet, Governor Hobbs evaded the question, expressing pride in Arizona's contributions to space exploration instead.

It's worth noting that American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, in 1930. Notably, Pluto is the only planet to have been discovered in the United States.

“The whole story of Clyde is just amazing, just sitting there under the telescope’’ looking for planets by taking photos over a period of time," said Arizona state Republican Justin Wilmeth (R-Phoenix), who praised the Pluto legislation.

Senator Sally Ann&nbsp;<a name="_Hlk162875205">Gonzales</a>&nbsp;(D-Tucson)--one among the five senators who voted against the legislation--said, “Scientifically, they took it out of being a planet." <h2>What is the status of Pluto?</h2>

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) decided to reclassify Pluto, removing it from the category of planets. They argued that the distant icy object at the outer reaches of the solar system did not meet the complete and precise criteria required for classification as a planet. Consequently, the IAU designated Pluto as a "dwarf planet."

According to NASA, “Pluto is a dwarf planet located in a distant region of our solar system beyond Neptune known as the Kuiper Belt. It was long considered our ninth planet, but the International Astronomical Union reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet in 2006."

“It was named by 11-year-old Venetia Burney of Oxford, England," the US space agency added.

Former head of US Central Command, retired Gen. Frank McKenzie, on Sunday (Mar 31) issued a stark warning about the Islamic State's (ISIS) intentions to attack the United States and its allies.

In an interview with ABC News, the retired general highlighted ISIS's recent attacks in Moscow and Iran and emphasised the growing threat posed by the terror group and its affiliates.

<h2>'Believe them'</h2>

McKenzie remarked that the global community should believe the terrorist organisation's threats.

"We should believe them when they say that. They're going to try to do it," he said, referring to ISIS's desire to launch attacks against the US and its allies.&nbsp;

He noted that the threat was "growing" after America's withdrawal from Afghanistan.

"It began to grow as soon as we left Afghanistan. It took pressure off ISIS-K."

Calling attacks against the US "inevitable," McKenzie said, "I think we should expect further attempts of this nature against the United States as well as our partners and other nations abroad."&nbsp;

<h2>US exit from Afghanistan: Good or Bad?</h2>

Arguing that maintaining a small presence could have prevented the resurgence of extremist groups in the region, McKenzie criticised the complete withdrawal of US troops and called it a boon for the Islamic State and similar militants.

He said, "In Afghanistan, we have almost no ability to see into that country and almost no ability to strike into that country."

This is in contrast to President Joe Biden's assurances that the US retains "over-the-horizon capability" to "act quickly and decisively" from afar.

McKenzie emphasised the importance of maintaining pressure on extremist groups in their homelands to prevent them from carrying out large-scale attacks, but said: "Unfortunately, we no longer place that pressure on them, so they're free to gain strength, they're free to plan, they're free to coordinate."&nbsp;

He suggested that if the US and its allies had kept forces in Afghanistan, "I think we might actually be safer than we are."

<h2>Recent Moscow attack</h2>

Addressing the recent terror attack in Moscow, the retired General said Russians could have "averted this attack had they actually listened to the material that was presented to them" by the US.

Describing self-radicalisation as potentially "the most dangerous method&nbsp;that ISIS can use to generate attacks," he said, self-radicalised "attacks are generally not going to be well coordinated, they're not going to be well planned and they're not going to be well supported. But they could be very lethal because they'll be so hard to detect."
&nbsp;
He also warned that groups like ISIS-K are using influence campaigns, online methods and in-person training to recruit.&nbsp;

Following the tragic collapse of a Baltimore bridge, attention is drawn to the alarming number of structurally deficient bridges across the country. From economic repercussions to the urgent need for repair, we uncover the critical issues facing our infrastructure.

US Bridge safety in focus after Baltimore incident

Officials announced on Sunday (Mar 31) that workers successfully extracted the first&nbsp;200-tonne segment of Baltimore's collapsed bridge, marking the beginning of efforts to clear the harbour after a ship accident.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge sustained damage when the Dali cargo vessel lost control and collided with it resulting in six deaths. The demolition crew&nbsp;used&nbsp;blow torches to cut through the upper section of the structure.

"The first lift was made last night after the cutting of the top portion of one of the northern sections of the Key Bridge was completed," said US Coast Guard spokeswoman Kimberly Reaves in a statement.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore commented on Sunday that "progress is starting to occur, despite the complexity of the situation," as salvage efforts continued. He noted that adverse weather conditions and submerged debris prevented divers from assisting. Moore told CNN that a large crane, the Chesapeake 1,000, capable of lifting 1,000 pounds, was deployed in the salvage operation.

The ship moved towards the bridge because of power problems, and the pilot sent a Mayday call. This helped stop some road traffic before the collision at 1:30 am, which caused the bridge to collapse quickly.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said on CBS's "Face the Nation" that there is no set time to clear the harbour and reopen the port.

"It takes a lot to make sure that it can be dismantled safely, to make sure that the vessel stays where it is supposed to be and doesn't swing out into the channel, but it has to be done," he said.

When asked to comment on the video, the US Secret Service said that it “does not confirm or comment on matters of protective intelligence.”

“This image from Donald Trump is the type of crap you post when you’re calling for a ‘bloodbath’ or when you tell the proud boys to ‘stand back and stand by,’” said Michael Tyler, the Biden campaign’s communications director, to CNN.&nbsp;

He added, “Trump is regularly inciting political violence and it’s time people take him seriously – just ask the Capitol police officers who were attacked protecting our democracy on January 6.”

Tyler’s statement referred to the former president’s violent and often inflammatory rhetoric. Earlier this month, Trump during a rally in the state of Ohio warned that there would be a “bloodbath” for the American auto industry and the country if he is not re-elected in&nbsp;the upcoming elections.&nbsp;

The development came after a new national security law came into force.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken released a statement saying that in the past year China "continued to take actions against Hong Kong's promised high degree of autonomy, democratic institutions, and rights and freedoms."

However, he did not share details on the officials that would be targeted in the latest sanctions.

He stated that the crackdown included the passage of 'Article 23', which is a national security law that is aimed at targeting several crimes such as treason, insurrection, espionage, and theft of state secrets among others.

The announcement by Blinken case after the annual review of Hong Kong's autonomy by Washington.

"This year, I have again certified that Hong Kong does not warrant treatment under U.S. laws in the same manner as the laws were applied to Hong Kong before July 1, 1997," Blinken said.
