US: Republican National Committee put under lockdown after vials of blood found inside premises

The Republican National Committee’s headquarters in Washington, United States was briefly evacuated and put on lockdown, on Wednesday (May 22) morning after it received two vials of blood after former US President Donald Trump took over the national party apparatus in March. The Associated Press citing sources said that the vials had been addressed to the presumptive presidential nominee.

What we know about the incident

A report by the Guardian citing eyewitnesses said that several hazmat trucks that are equipped with tools to handle hazardous materials were seen outside the RNC building which is near the US Capitol at around 8:00 am (local time).

The RNC office received a package containing two vials of blood, a Chinese philosophy text, and two ice packs and they are currently investigating the source of the package, said the Capitol Police spokeswoman Brianna Burch.

Earlier on Wednesday, Burch had incorrectly described the text that was in the package as a “Korean bible.” It was also unclear if anyone came into contact with the blood and to whom it belonged.

Earlier on Wednesday, the police had issued a statement advising people to avoid the block where the RNC’s headquarters is located “due to law enforcement activity.”

The lockdown notice came when House Republicans were due to meet in the building for their weekly conference. It was not immediately clear if any lawmaker was present when the incident was reported.

According to a UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, the aid convoys do not travel with armed security. He said security comes from engagement with various community groups and humanitarian partners.

The Pentagon press secretary, Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, said as of Tuesday 569 metric tonnes of aid has been delivered to the secured area at the Gaza port. Some aid remains at the port because distribution agencies are seeking alternative routes to transport it to warehouses in Gaza.

Also read: Biden`s clean chit to Israel? US president says war in Gaza `not genocide` President Joe Biden had ordered the US military to build the floating pier for deliveries of food and other vital supplies. Israeli restrictions on shipments through land borders and ongoing fighting have caused a severe food crisis for all 2.3 million residents of Gaza since the Israel-Hamas war began in October. US and UN officials reported that famine has gripped northern Gaza. When asked if any aid from the pier had yet reached Gaza residents in need, Ryder said, “I do not believe so.” × The war began in October 2023 after a Hamas-led attack killed about 1,200 people in Israel. Israeli airstrikes and fighting have killed more than 35,000 Palestinians since then. As per the UN, since May 10, only about three dozen trucks have made it into Gaza via the nearby Kerem Shalom crossing from Israel because fighting makes it difficult for aid workers to reach it. Apple is preparing to challenge an antitrust lawsuit filed by the US Justice Department and 15 states, accusing the tech giant of monopolising the smartphone market, stifling competition, and driving up prices. In a letter to US District Judge Julien X. Neals in New Jersey, Apple announced its intent to seek dismissal of the case, arguing that the allegations are unfounded, and the lawsuit relies on an unprecedented theory of antitrust liability. Apple asserts that it faces strong competition from other established smartphone manufacturers, thereby disputing claims that it holds a monopolistic position. The company said that the complaint fails to demonstrate that Apple has the power to enforce supra-competitive prices or limit market output. "Far from being a monopolist, Apple faces fierce competition from well-established rivals," the company mentioned in its correspondence with the court. The Justice Department's lawsuit, filed in March, accuses Apple of leveraging its market power to extract more money from consumers and various business partners, including developers, content creators, and small businesses. The lawsuit claims Apple maintains its alleged monopoly by enforcing restrictive contracts and denying essential access to developers. The government's case also highlights Apple's pricing strategies, claiming that the company charges up to $1,599 for an iPhone and makes higher profits than any of its competitors. Additionally, it argues that Apple's practices result in hidden charges that affect a wide range of business partners, including software developers and credit card companies, ultimately leading to higher consumer prices. In its defence, Apple refuted that it locks consumers into its ecosystem. The company pointed out that dissatisfied customers have ample motivation to switch to alternative platforms that do not impose similar limitations. Apple emphasised that it offers competitive prices and innovation in response to a dynamic market. Attorney General Merrick Garland has previously remarked on the broader implications of the case, stating, "Consumers should not have to pay higher prices because companies violate the antitrust laws. If left unchallenged, Apple will only continue to strengthen its smartphone monopoly." The Justice Department is expected to respond to Apple's letter within the next week. US elections: Debate over reproductive rights continues to polarise US

Former US president Donald Trump deleted a video that he posted on his social media platform Truth Social, which included a reference to a “unified Reich”.
