The governor of the US state of Louisiana, on Friday (May 24) signed a first-of-its-kind legislation that added two abortion-inducing drugs to the state’s list of controlled and dangerous substances. This comes after the Republican lawmakers in the southern US state passed the bill which would criminalise possession of abortion pills without a prescription.

About the bill

The signing of the bill makes Louisiana the only state in the US to categorise mifepristone and misoprostol – medicines that are used in medication abortions, the most common method of abortion in the United States – as controlled dangerous substances.

The legislation was passed by 64-29 in the state house and 29-7 in the state senate, and was later signed into law by Republican Governor Jeff Landry adding the abortion drugs to Schedule IV of the state’s Uniform Controlled Dangerous Substances Law.

The bill now places mifepristone and misoprostol, commonly used for abortions including at-home medication abortions in the same category as Valium and Xanax.

The possession of abortion drugs in question, without a prescription, would be punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

The bill exempts authorised medical practitioners from prosecution as well as pregnant women if they have the medication for their own use.

Opponents of the legislation, including many physicians, argued that abortion drugs have other critical reproductive health care uses and changing the classification would make it more difficult to prescribe the medicines, reported the Associated Press.

Ahead of the passage of the bill, over 200 doctors in the state signed a letter to lawmakers warning that the measure could produce a “barrier to physicians’ ease of prescribing appropriate treatment” and cause unnecessary fear and confusion among both patients and physicians.

On the other hand, the supporters of the bill, as per AP have said that it would protect expectant mothers from coerced abortions, citing3 one example of that happening in the state of Texas.

The new law will take effect on October 1.

The Republican National Committee headquarters was locked down on Wednesday morning (May 22) after two vials of blood were found in a package addressed to former President Donald Trump.

The Republican National Committee headquarters was locked down on Wednesday morning (May 22) after two vials of blood were found in a package addressed to former President Donald Trump. The party’s chairman called it a “biological attack. Capitol Police confirmed the package's contents in a statement, noting that it had been “cleared by our Hazardous Incident Response Division.” “The source of the package and its contents will be further investigated,” the statement added. A source told the Associated Press that the vials were addressed to Trump, but it was unclear whose blood they contained. “Today, vials of blood were sent to RNC Headquarters in DC. We are thankful to law enforcement, who responded quickly and ensured everyone’s safety. The lockdown has been cleared and staff has resumed their office duties because we remain unintimidated and undeterred in our efforts to elect President Trump to the White House,” RNC chief Michael Whatley said in a statement. “This revolting attack comes on the heels of pro-Hamas protestors violently demonstrating on college campuses and deranged Biden supporters physically attacking our campaign volunteers for supporting President Trump,” Whatley added. No injuries were reported, but a hazmat unit was called to the headquarters, forcing RNC staff to evacuate and wait outside for about an hour. Several sources informed The Post that an "all clear" was issued around 9:40 a.m., allowing employees to return to the building. Supporters of the 45th president assumed control of the party operations in early March after Trump became the presumptive GOP nominee. Whatley and Lara Trump were unanimously chosen as chair and co-chair, and some employees had to reapply for their jobs. Trump adviser Chris LaCivita is also leading the RNC team, with staff at the DC headquarters working on-site to get ready for the November 5 election.
