TikTok is working on an independent version of its algorithm that provides recommendations for its 170 million US users, to&nbsp;reassure American lawmakers concerned about data security, according to persons familiar with the matter cited by Reuters.

TikTok's Chinese parent company ByteDance ordered the initiative late last year, predating the legislative drive for a forced sale of TikTok's US operations. The bill, which was passed into law in April, requires TikTok to relinquish its holdings in the United States by January 19, 2025.

According to Reuters, TikTok programmers in the United States and China are currently splitting millions of lines of code to separate TikTok's algorithm from ByteDance's Chinese counterpart, Douyin. This technical separation is intended to resolve bipartisan concerns about potential Chinese government access to US user data.

ByteDance has repeatedly said that selling TikTok's US business is not feasible, citing commercial, technological, and regulatory constraints. Following the release of this news, TikTok contested Reuters' claim, labelling it as "misleading and factually inaccurate" on its X account, without citing the errors.

In May, TikTok and ByteDance sued in federal court in the United States to block the statute. A US appeals court has set a tight timeline to address these legal issues.

In recent months, hundreds of developers have been charged with the difficult task of developing a new code base for TikTok US This endeavour, characterised by sources as "dirty work," entails ensuring that the new algorithm is clear of any ties to Chinese user data.

The proposal reveals TikTok's efforts to limit the political dangers it confronts in the US President Biden and other bill proponents think that TikTok poses a substantial threat because it might provide Beijing access to massive amounts of data on US consumers.

The Chinese government's 2020 decision to add content recommendation algorithms to its export control list complicates matters by requiring any divestment or sale of TikTok's algorithm to go through administrative licensing procedures.

TikTok's recommendation engine, which tailors user content based on interaction data, has contributed significantly to the app's global appeal. ByteDance attributes TikTok's popularity to its smart algorithm.

TikTok previously attempted to address US concerns with "Project Texas," an effort to separate US user data that failed to satisfy regulators and lawmakers. The present code-splitting endeavour attempts to highlight TikTok USA's independence from ByteDance.

According to sources, TikTok executives have explored considering open-sourcing portions of their algorithms to increase transparency. However, the primary focus is still on developing a distinct recommendation engine for the US market.

This project is projected to take more than a year to complete. Despite the ongoing legal fights, ByteDance continues to go forward with the technological separation, acknowledging the risk that TikTok US will struggle to sustain its current performance levels without ByteDance's engineering support.

The goal is to create a new source code repository for TikTok US that operates independently of TikTok's other regional apps and Douyin. This move is viewed as a significant step in TikTok's efforts to comply with US regulatory requirements and protect its future in the American market.

Former US President Donald Trump's criminal trial over alleged falsified documents to cover up a "hush money" payment is coming to a close. Watch in for more details!

Donald Trump's Hush Money Trial: Grounds for appeal?

Donald Trump continued to complain about his criminal trial as jurors began deliberating, on Wednesday (May 29) on whether to convict the former United States president or not based on charges stemming from $130,000 in hush money allegedly paid to the adult film actress, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-hush-money-trial-key-witness-stormy-daniels-receives-death-threats-726371">Stormy Daniels</a> ahead of the 2016 presidential election.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened in court?</h2>

The jurors began deliberations behind closed doors to weigh the evidence and testimony they have heard and seen over the last five weeks. There is no telling how long the jury, which comprises seven men and five women, will deliberate for and there’s no time limit either.

However, media reports suggest that a verdict by the end of this week is unlikely.&nbsp;

The proceedings began with Judge Juan Merchan, overseeing the trial giving instructions to the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trumps-hush-money-trial-court-selects-12-jurors-an-alternate-announces-we-have-our-jury-712751">12 jurors</a> reminding them of their solemn responsibility to decide whether Trump is guilty or not.

During his instructions to the jurors, judge Merchan also said that they <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-hush-money-trial-day-21-key-points-as-closing-arguments-come-to-end-726467">cannot solely rely</a> on the testimony of the prosecutor’s key witness and Trump’s former lawyer-turned-foe Michael Cohen.&nbsp;

He also told jurors to apply extra scrutiny to Cohen since he testified that he was directly involved in Trump’s alleged efforts to cover up the payment to Daniels ahead of the 2016 election.&nbsp;

“Even if you find the testimony of Michael Cohen to be believable, you may not convict the defendant solely on that testimony unless you find it was corroborated by other evidence,” Merchan said.

The judge also reminded them that the burden of proof remains on the prosecutor and Trump cannot be held responsible for his decision to not testify in court.&nbsp;

“You must set aside any personal opinions or bias you might have in favor of or against the defendant,” the judge reminded the jurors.&nbsp;

To convict Trump, Merchan told the jury they would have to come to a unanimous decision. Therefore, even if just one juror refuses to join the others, the judge would have to declare a mistrial.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to the 34-count indictment brought against him by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for falsifying business records to cover the hush money payments to Daniels.&nbsp;

The former president has also denied having sex with the adult film actress and repeatedly called the trial politically motivated.&nbsp;

“Mother Teresa could not beat these charges,” he told reporters after leaving the courtroom. He added, “The whole thing is rigged.”

“What is happening here is weaponization at a level that nobody’s seen before ever and it shouldn’t be allowed to happen,” said the former president.&nbsp;

He also went on to attack his rival in the upcoming election and successor US President Joe Biden and accused the judge of being conflicted.&nbsp;

If found guilty, the former president faces up to four years in prison. However, imprisonment is unlikely for a first-time felon convicted of such a crime.&nbsp;

France and Germany have said that Ukraine should be permitted to use their weaponry against targets inside Russia from which Moscow attacks Ukraine.

While addressing the media, alongside German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday (May 28), French President Emmanuel Macron outlined that French weapons supplied to Ukraine, including long-range missiles, were permitted to strike targets within Russia.

“Since Ukrainian soil is being attacked from bases in Russia, how can we explain to the Ukrainians that we need to protect these towns and everything we’re seeing around Kharkiv currently,” Macron said.

“We believe that we should allow them to neutralise the military sites from which the missiles are fired and, basically, the military sites from which Ukraine is attacked,” Macron continued.

However, Macron emphasised that "we must not allow them to strike other targets in Russia," including civilian or additional military sites.

Echoing Macron’s comments, Germany’s Scholz said that Ukraine was permitted to defend itself provided it adhered to the conditions set by the countries supplying the weapons - including the United States - and international law.

“Ukraine has every possibility under international law for what it is doing. That has to be said clearly,” Scholz said. “I find it odd when some people disagree that it should not be allowed to defend itself and take measures that are suitable for this.”

Western allies of Ukraine have maintained a long-standing policy that donated weapons should be strictly used within Ukrainian territory.&nbsp;

The issue is a controversial one, with fears from Western leaders that if their weaponry is used to strike inside Russia, it would escalate the violence and trigger a wider war involving NATO.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repetitively asked permission from his allies to expand the usage of the provided weapons to strike inside Russia.

The United States, the largest arms supplier to Ukraine, has previously prohibited Kyiv from firing its weapons inside Russian territory over escalation concerns.

However, in recent remarks that come into view as a hint -the possibility of a policy change, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Wednesday (May 29) that the US would continue to “adapt and adjust” its support for Ukraine.

“Another seal of our support for Ukraine over the last two years has been to adapt as the conditions have changed. Battlefields change. As what Russia does has changed in terms of how it is pursuing its aggression escalation, we’ve adapted and adjusted too. And I am confident we will continue to do that,” he said when asked about the possibility of allowing Ukraine to strike Russian soil.

“"We have neither encouraged nor enabled strikes beyond Ukraine's borders. As I have previously stated, Ukraine must independently determine the most effective strategies for its defense. Our commitment is to ensure that Ukraine possesses the necessary equipment to achieve this objective," Secretary Blinken asserted.

When asked about his remarks about adjusting and adapting, he added, “We’re always listening. We’re always learning to make sure that Ukraine can effectively continue to defend itself.”

US military is temporarily removing the humanitarian aid pier off Gaza's coast after the structure broke off, as per a statement by the Pentagon on Tuesday (May 28).&nbsp;

This comes as a section of the pier had detached and repairs to the pier are necessary before Washington continues to deliver the critical aid to Gazans.&nbsp;

"Over the next 48 hours, US forces will remove the pier from its anchored position on the coast and tow it back to the Israeli coastal city of Ashdod to begin repairs,"&nbsp;Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh said.&nbsp;

This floating pier, part of the Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore (JLOTS) operation, was first announced on March 8 after President Joe Biden tasked the military with leading a temporary humanitarian aid mission.

It became operational on May 17 and costs an estimated $320 million for the first 90 days and involves about 1,000 US service members.

Pentagon spokesperson Singh outlined the repair timeline saying, "Centcom anticipates repairs to the pier to take approximately one week."

<h2>Vessels ran aground</h2>

The necessity for repairs arose after rough seas on May 25 caused three of the four vessels associated with the pier to run aground. In addition to this, the harsh sea conditions and a North African weather system caused part of the trident pier to detach from its anchored position.

However, Singh highlighted the pier's importance in aid delivery during the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.&nbsp;

"The pier proved highly valuable in delivering aid to the people of Gaza. Thus, upon completion of the pier repair and reassembly, the intention is to re-anchor the temporary pier to the coast of Gaza and resume humanitarian aid to the people who need it most," she said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday (May 28) that the West could face serious consequences if it allowed Ukraine to use their weapons to strike targets in Russia, as sought by Kyiv.&nbsp;

The warning came as French President Emmanuel Macron said Kyiv should be allowed to "neutralise" Russian military bases from where Kremlin troops are firing missiles into Ukraine, and as President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the world not to tire of the war.&nbsp;

At the Manhattan courthouse, lawyers for former US President Donald Trump and state prosecutors presented their closing arguments to jurors in the hush money trial on Tuesday (May 28).&nbsp;Now, the jury will soon deliberate whether Trump will become the first former US president convicted of a crime as he faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to a $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels.

Here are the key takeaways from the closing arguments of the defence and prosecution&nbsp;

<h2>Defence closing arguments</h2>

Trump’s defence lawyer Todd Blanche delivered nearly three hours of arguments and challenged the prosecution's case by attacking the credibility of its star witness, Michael Cohen. Blanche's argument ranged from detailed discussions on tax filings to political campaign practices.&nbsp;

“There’s no malfeasance here, only democracy in action,” Blanche said, adding the case was a 'witch hunt'.&nbsp;

By framing his case as a misinterpretation of normal campaign activities, he argued that every political campaign in the country "is a conspiracy to promote a candidate, a group of people who are working together to help somebody win.”

In addition to this, Blanche dismissed Daniels’s testimony as irrelevant to the charges and accused her of attempting to garner sympathy from jurors.

He also depicted Cohen as a “serial liar” and “the human embodiment of reasonable doubt.”&nbsp;

Urging jurors to remain impartial, Blanche concluded, “This is not a referendum on the ballot box—who you voted for in 2016 or 2020, who you plan on voting for in 2024. That is not what this is about.”

<h2>Prosecution closing arguments</h2>

Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass spent over five hours detailing the case against Trump, pointing out that the former president attempted to 'hoodwink voters'.&nbsp;

He characterised his actions as a deliberate conspiracy to deceive voters during the 2016 election. Steinglass argued that Trump orchestrated an elaborate scheme to conceal payments which involved a series of events aimed at manipulating and defrauding voters.

“Trump’s intent to defraud could not be any clearer,” Steinglass said.

He also pointed out that a direct payment to Daniels would have been simpler but less effective in hiding the affair.

He argued that the scheme was “cloaked in lies" and it benefitted Trump above all others.

“The name of the game was concealment and all roads lead inescapably to the man who benefited the most: the defendant, former president Donald Trump.”

Addressing the jury, Steinglass invoked Trump’s own words, saying, “Donald Trump can’t shoot someone on Fifth Avenue at rush hour and get away with it.” However, this remark by the prosecution drew an objection from Blanche.&nbsp;

Steinglass also reviewed other “catch-and-kill” schemes linked to Trump, including that by National Enquirer&nbsp;publisher David Pecker.&nbsp;

Countering the defence’s portrayal of the hush money as a move to protect Trump’s family, Steinglass noted the timing of the payment in 2016, 10 years after the alleged affair.

“The defendant’s primary concern was not his family but the election,” he said.

Oscar winner actor Robert De Niro, 80, was also present on behalf of the Biden campaign outside the courthouse. De Niro, calling Trump "a clown," expressed his connection to downtown New York City and said the former US president does not belong there. This marked the Biden campaign's first clear involvement in Trump's legal issues.

Protesters shouted slogans against De Niro, calling him a "paid sell-out" to the Democratic National Committee. De Niro was joined along side former police officers who defended the US Capitol on January&nbsp;6, 2021.&nbsp;

Starting Wednesday (May 29), the jury will begin evaluating the 34 counts of falsifying business records.

A verdict in&nbsp;the case may not be reached by the end of the week, reports said, but the 12-member jury is on the brink of making a historic decision.&nbsp;

Trump hush money trial day 21: Robert DeNiro heckled by Trump supporters on closing arguments day

Former United States President Donald Trump, on Tuesday (May 28) arrived at the courthouse accompanied by three of his children as the historic trial is nearing the end. The jury is set to hear the closing arguments from the prosecution and the former president’s lawyers on the charges stemming from $130,000 in hush money allegedly paid to the adult film actress, Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election.&nbsp;

<h2>‘A dark day in America’</h2>

Before entering the court, the former president spoke to reporters and read quotes from political and legal commentators who have criticised the case, something that Trump has done regularly amid the six-week trial.&nbsp;

He also called Judge Juan Merchan “corrupt” and “conflicted” but said he couldn’t speak about it because of the gag order.

“We’ll see how it goes. This is a very dangerous day for America. It’s a very sad day,” said Trump while entering the court with three of his children – Don Jr, Eric and Tiffany.&nbsp;

As the day progressed, Trump's kids spoke in their father's support with&nbsp;Eric calling it a&nbsp;“political warfare”.&nbsp;

<h2>Closing arguments underway</h2>

The judge reminded the jurors that the summations were not evidence and that the lawyers were not witnesses in the case before the lawyers began their statements. “You and you alone are the judges of the facts in this case,” said judge Merchan.&nbsp;

Trump lawyer Todd Blanche began his statement by asserting Trump is innocent and that the jurors should look beyond the salacious details of the former president’s alleged trysts and focus instead on hard evidence, which he said was lacking.&nbsp;

“President Trump is innocent. He did not commit any crimes, and the district attorney has not met their burden of proof. Period,” said Blanche. He also said that the jurors should look beyond key witness Daniels’ account of their alleged sexual encounter, which Trump denies.&nbsp;

Earlier this month Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, took the witness stand in the Manhattan court and detailed her alleged sexual encounter with Trump and testified that she was given a $130,000 hush money payment ahead of the 2016 presidential election.&nbsp;

Blanche was making his final bid to influence the 12 jurors who decide whether Trump, 77, will become the first US president to be convicted of a crime. The former president has been accused of illegally falsifying records to cover up the hush payment.&nbsp;

During his statement, Balanche also asked jurors not to rely on Daniels’ or Trump’s former lawyer and fixer-turned-foe Michael Cohen’s testimonies. Both of them were the prosecution’s key witnesses in the case.&nbsp;

<h2>Prosecution fumes over Blanche's comments</h2>

After Trump's lawyer was done with his statement, judge Merchan scolded&nbsp;Blanche for his&nbsp;comment asking jurors not to send Trump to prison on Cohen's words.&nbsp;

Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass raised the issue about what he called a "ridiculous comment" and asked the judge to intervene.

"I think that saying that was outrageous," the judge said scolding Trump's lawyer.&nbsp;

Judge Merchan told&nbsp;jurors that&nbsp;Blanche’s comment was "improper and you must disregard it."

During their statement, the prosecution sought to&nbsp;rebut&nbsp;the defence's claim that&nbsp;Daniels was trying to “extort” Trump and said that even if that was true it is "not a defense to election fraud."

“You don’t get to commit election fraud or falsify business records because you believe you’ve been victimized,” he told jurors.

Steinglass also attempted&nbsp;to rebuff Trump's lawyer's efforts to discredit Cohen's testimony saying his&nbsp;past dishonesty should be taken into account but his anger is also&nbsp;understandable given that, “To date, he’s the only one that’s paid the price for his role in this conspiracy.”

The prosecutor also pointed to other testimonies reminding the jury that Cohen was not the one on trial and&nbsp;accused the defence of wanting to make this case all about Trump's former lawyer.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Cohen testified that as Trump’s fixer, he handled the payment to Daniels and that Trump approved the cover-up.

If found guilty, the former president faces up to four years in prison. However, imprisonment is unlikely for a first-time felon convicted of such a crime.

A terrifying video of a violent tornado ravaging Texas, United States has surfaced on social media. Recorded by two women stuck in the tornado, the video shows the mighty whirlwind crossing the road while they were driving near Valley View.&nbsp;

Although the duo survived miraculously, the storm snuffed out several lives.

Valenia Gill and Brenda Proctor Dance were returning after attending a singer/songwriter show when nature let all hell break loose. 15 minutes after the show, rain began blowing sideways and the wind sounded across their vehicle.

<h2>The horrifying video</h2>

In the video, one can hear the hail pelting the car. “(Expletive)’s flying everywhere,” Gill says in the clip, as chunks of debris flew past the headlights.

“Look at it,” Dance says. “My ears are popping.”

“My ears are popping, too, from the pressure,” Gill says. “Look at the sign shaking.”

Soon after, the road signs start flapping violently. As visibility ahead worsens, Gill stops the car.

“Oh my God,” one of the women can be heard repeating.

“We’re right in the middle of the tornado, Brenda. What do I do?” Gill shouts. “The car is shaking.”

The video shifts right, left and down as the horrifying tornado wildly rocks the car. “The car, we’re in it (the tornado), Brenda,” Gill yells, with the movement making the video blurry. “I can’t do anything.”

“Cover your head,” a distressed Dance says. “Cover your head.”

The clamour of the wind in the video is frightening, and power flashes light up the roadway with the power poles being disassembled. “It’s got my car, I know,” Gill says. “We’re still shaking, my ears are popping.”

The wind then seems to become slightly slower, but still loud enough to scare the women. “Okay, okay,” Gill said, sounding terrified. “I don’t want to go anywhere yet. I’m shaking, the car’s still shaking.”

In the background, one can hear the sirens or emergency vehicles. When a car pulls around them, a power line can be seen down across the street. As the car drives away, one of them says, shocked, “Are they going?”

Later in a Facebook post, Dance wrote, “I would never wish this on anyone...”, referring to the perilous incident. “Physically I may look ok.... on the inside I'm all tore up. This was terrifying seeing your life literally flash before your eyes.... we made it out alive and across the highway was a lot worse.”

Dance has launched a GoFundMe to raise money for Gill’s car repairs. “We came face to face with the tornado. She is disabled and only has the minimum liability on her car due to being on fixed income,” the page reads.
