Russian forces said Tuesday they had captured the key hub of New York in eastern Ukraine, as Moscow -- under pressure by a Kyiv counterattack on its territory -- presses on with its offensive.

The defence ministry said its troops had captured "one of the largest settlements of the Toretsk agglomeration and the strategically important logistics hub (of) Novgorodskoye", referring to the town in Ukraine's Donetsk region by its former name.

The capture of the town, which had a population of around 10,000 before Moscow launched its offensive, is the latest in a string of Russian advances in the region.

On Monday, Russia said it had captured the town of Zalizne, close to New York.

Donetsk was one of four Ukrainian regions that Moscow claimed to have annexed in 2022, despite not having full control over any of them.

The region has seen the most intense combat of the two-and-a-half-year conflict.

Kyiv has struggled to hold the front line there, facing manpower and ammunition shortages after months of attritional fighting.

Ukraine launched a border incursion into Russia's western Kursk region two weeks ago, a move it hoped could relieve pressure in other parts of the battlefield.

But the Russian advance in Donetsk has continued.

New York first found itself on the front line in 2014, when Moscow-backed separatists in the east tried to breakaway from Kyiv, triggering an armed conflict.

The origin of the town's name is a mystery, with theories including possible American connections among its founders.

It was renamed "Novgorodskoye" -- New City -- by Soviet authorities in 1951 for ideological reasons, before Ukrainian lawmakers voted to switch it back to New York in 2021.

Ukraine's incursion into Russia: Day 12 | Ukraine blows up another military bridge in Kursk region

Ukraine announced on Sunday that it had targeted a second crucial bridge in Russia's Kursk region, aiming to disrupt Moscow's supply lines as Kyiv's ongoing incursion into Russian territory continued into its second week. Meanwhile, Russia intensified its efforts in eastern Ukraine, claiming to have taken control of another village close to the Ukrainian-held logistics centre of Pokrovsk.

"One more bridge down," stated Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk on Telegram, sharing aerial footage of an explosion ripping through a bridge near Zvannoye, Russia. "The Air Force is persistently undermining the enemy's logistics through precise air strikes," he added.

While the exact date and time of the strike were not disclosed, Russian military bloggers circulated images from the scene that appeared similar to another incident reported on Saturday.

Earlier, on Friday, Ukraine declared it had destroyed a bridge in the nearby town of Glushkovo, both of which span the Seym River, which runs through the region. The attacks on these bridges have significantly limited Russia's crossing points over the river in this area.

On Sunday, Russia claimed that its forces had captured Svyrydonivka, a frontline village approximately 15 kilometres (9 miles) from Pokrovsk. Pokrovsk, a crucial junction for roadways supplying Ukrainian forces and towns across the eastern front, has long been a target for Russian troops.

"Through active operations, units of the Centre grouping of troops have liberated the village of Sviridonovka," stated the Russian defence ministry, using the Russian name for the settlement. The ministry also reported ongoing efforts to push back Ukrainian forces near several other villages. According to Russian authorities, over 120,000 people have fled the region since the fighting began.

Early Sunday, Ukrainian drones targeted an oil storage facility in Russia's southern Rostov region, igniting a large fire, though no injuries were reported. "Air defences in the southeast of the Rostov region thwarted a drone attack. Debris fell onto industrial storage facilities in Proletarsk, causing a diesel fuel fire," Governor Vasily Golubev posted on Telegram.

"At 05:35 (0235 GMT), firefighting efforts at the industrial site in Proletarsk were paused due to a second drone strike," he mentioned in a later update.

On August 6, Kyiv launched its most significant attack on Russian soil since the Kremlin initiated its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, sending troops and armored vehicles across the border.
