The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is the nuclear watchdog of the United Nations (UN), warned on Saturday (Aug 17) that the safety situation at Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was “deteriorating” after a nearby drone strike.

The plant, which was seized by Russia’s forces early in the war, has come under repeated attacks that both sides have accused each other of carrying out. Earlier on Saturday, Russia accused Ukraine of dropping an explosive charge on a road near the occupied plant in southern Ukraine, a report by the news agency AFP said. IAEA calls for maximum restraint from all sides IAEA experts on the site were informed of the detonation near essential plant facilities on Saturday and immediately visited the area, the agency said in a statement. Experts reported that the damage seemed to have been caused by a drone equipped with an explosive payload, affecting the road between the plant's two main gates. “Yet again we see an escalation of the nuclear safety and security dangers facing the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant,” the IAEA head, Rafael Grossi, said in the statement. “I remain extremely concerned and reiterate my call for maximum restraint from all sides,” he added. The UN watchdog also pointed out that the nuclear safety situation at the plant was deteriorating. Intense military activity reported near the plant The IAEA team on site also reported intense military activity over the past week in the area, including very close to the Zaporizhzhia plant. “The team has heard frequent explosions, repetitive heavy machine-gun and rifle fire and artillery at various distances from the plant,” it said. Since the Ukraine war began in late February 2022, the IAEA has repeatedly urged restraint, saying it fears reckless military action could trigger a serious nuclear accident at the plant. Last weekend, Kyiv and Moscow traded blame after a fire broke out at a cooling tower at the plant. (With inputs from agencies)

Symbols such as the white triangle are a common part of modern warfare, especially when both sides use much of the same equipment and wear similar uniforms. When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, many armoured vehicles had a "Z" symbol in white paint. This symbol, back in Russia, has become synonymous with support for President Vladimir Putin’s war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday (Aug 4) confirmed the long-awaited arrival of the US-made F-16s more than 29 months after Russia's invasion. President Zelensky announced the use of F-16s, which Kyiv has long lobbied for, as he met military pilots at an air base flanked by two of the jets with two more flying overhead. However, Russia has already begun targeting potential F-16 bases and has vowed to shoot down the jets, raising the stakes in the ongoing conflict. "F-16s are in Ukraine. We did it. I am proud of our guys who are mastering these jets and have already started using them for our country," Zelensky told reporters at an undisclosed location, a report by the news agency Reuters said. A milestone for Ukraine The arrival of the F16s is a milestone for Ukraine after many months of waiting. Reuters reported that it was not yet known how many fighter jets arrived in Ukraine and how much of an impact they would have in combating Russian attacks. They are equipped with a 20mm cannon and can carry bombs, rockets and missiles. During Sunday's press conference, Zelensky said Ukraine still did not have enough pilots trained to use the F-16s or enough of the jets themselves. "The positive thing is that we are expecting additional F-16s ... many guys are now training." The Ukrainian president pointed out that Kyiv's allies needed to find ways to expand training programmes and opportunities for both Ukrainian pilots and engineering teams. 'A new stage of development for air force' Zelensky also said that the arrival of F16s was a new stage of development for the Ukrainian Air Force. "We did a lot for Ukrainian forces to transition to a new aviation standard, the Western combat aviation," he said, citing hundreds of meetings and unrelenting diplomacy to obtain the F-16s. The Ukrainian military on Saturday (Aug 3) said it had sunk a submarine in Russian-controlled Sevastopol, attacked a southern Russian airfield, and hit oil depots and fuel and lubricant storage facilities in Russia's Belgorod, Kursk, and Rostov regions.

In a post on X, the Ukrainian defence ministry said, "A Russian submarine went to the bottom of the Black Sea." The ministry named the vessel as the B-237 Rostov-on-Don attack submarine. The military's general staff said the attack on Sevastopol port also significantly damaged four launchers of the S-400 anti-aircraft "Triumf" defence system. Russia reacts to attacks on oil depots Russia did not comment on the submarine attack in Sevastopol. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military said that the attack on oil depots and fuel and lubricant storage facilities in Belgorod, Kursk, and Rostov regions set fire to at least two oil tanks. Also read | First batch of F-16 fighter jets reaches Ukraine after several delays: Report Officials in Russia said that tanks at a fuel storage depot in the Kamensky district of Rostov region caught fire as a result of a drone attack, a report by the news agency Reuters said. Belgorod's governor said that Ukraine-launched drones caused a fire at an oil storage depot there, adding that the fire was extinguished and no one was injured, Reuters reported. The attack on Russian airfield In other overnight attacks, the Ukrainian military said that it hit an ammunition depot at Morozovsk airfield where Russian forces stored guided aerial bombs among other equipment and many oil depots and fuel storage facilities. Reacting to the strikes, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday said, "Russian combat aviation must be destroyed wherever it is, by all effective means. It is also quite fair to strike at Russian airfields. And we need this joint solution with our partners - a security solution." President Zelensky added that Russian forces had used over 600 guided aerial bombs to attack Ukraine in the past week. Hailing the strikes, he added, "I would like to thank each of our soldiers and all those who work in our defence industry."
