Russia-Ukraine war: JD Vance pick adds to European fears over Trump Presidency

If a report in Russia's state-run Tass news agency is to be believed, a pro-Kremlin Ukrainian opposition politician has warned in a letter to Donald Trump that Kyiv is planning to assassinate the US presidential candidate.

This comes days after the failed assassination attempt on the Republican candidate in the presidential election, to be held on November 5.

Who is the opposition politician who warned Trump about Ukraine trying to kill him?

Viktor Volodymyrovych Medvedchuk, who wrote the letter, is an exiled Ukrainian politician who currently lives in Russia. A personal friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the oligarch-politician was handed over to Russia as part of a prisoner swap. He was the leader of Platform For Life party, which is now banned in Ukraine. He now leads the Other Ukraine movement, according to Tass.

What did the letter say?

In his letter, Medvedchuk said the reason for Trump being made a target is his calls for peace in Ukraine.

"This peace means the loss of power for [Ukraine President Volodymyr] Zelensky’s Nazi regime and its American sponsors from the [Joe] Biden administration," he claimed in the letter, as cited by Tass on Tuesday (July 16).

"This is why, esteemed Mr Trump, you have become an enemy for Ukrainian neo-Nazi Zelensky. And this scoundrel will stop at nothing to keep you from winning the presidential race," Medvedchuk said in his letter.

He also claimed that a "Ukrainian link may appear" in the recent bid on Trump's life.
To bolster his claim, he pointed out that Ukraine military intelligence chief Kirill Budanov had said that the Ukrainian authorities had tried to assassinate Russian President Putin.

He also pointed out the warning by chief of the Ukrainian presidential office Andrey Yermak that Ukrainians who want to make peace with Russia would be eliminated, the Tass report said.

"Physical elimination of political opponents and political corruption are links in a chain for those who are seeking to stay in power and are profiting from the war in Ukraine by means of selling weapons to Ukrainian neo-Nazis," he wrote in the letter.

"The usurpation of power by Zelensky and his personal interest in continuing hostilities in Ukraine to stay in power may lead to a bigger escalation of the conflict, its territorial expansion and the involvement of third countries, may entail more casualties, new acts of aggression and new threats to the entire world," Medvedchuk claimed.

"This threat can be thwarted when support for Zelensky’s criminal regime is stopped," he added, according to the Tass report.

How significant are claims that Ukraine may try to kill Trump?

It is intriguing because in the recently concluded NATO summit, Ukrainian President Zelensky had urged the US "not to wait till November" to give aid to Ukraine to fight its continuing war with Russia.

It is well-known that President Putin has had generally good relations with Trump when he was president in 2016-2020.

Russia on Tuesday (July 16) restricted access to 14 villages in southern Belgorod region bordering Ukraine, citing the "extremely difficult" situation there due to Ukrainian shelling. In a post on Telegram, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said that from next week, only adult men accompanying military or government officials would be allowed into the settlements. The men must travel in armoured vehicles and wear bulletproof vests and helmets, Governor Gladkov said. "I hope you will agree that it is unacceptable to let women and children into settlements that are shelled every day. We have already lost a lot of civilians, we have a lot of wounded. And, of course, our task is to maximise security measures," he added. A constant frustration for Kremlin Belgorod comes under frequent fire from Ukrainian shelling and drones, with four civilians injured overnight on Tuesday, the news agency Reuters reported. The routine attacks on the region have been a source of constant frustration for the Kremlin. More than 200 civilians have been killed in the Belgorod region since the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine in late February 2022. More than 1,100 have been wounded. The timing of the announcement The announcement of the restrictions came a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signalled he would welcome Russia to attend a future peace summit on ending the conflict, now in its third year. The invitation marked a change of tone from last month when Kyiv excluded Moscow from a high-level peace conference in Switzerland. Reacting to Zelensky's invitation, the Kremlin said, "The first peace summit was not a peace summit at all. So perhaps it is necessary to first understand what he means." (With inputs from agencies)

NATO members accused China of being a decisive enabler of Russia through its "large-scale support for Russia's defence industrial base." They called on China to stop "all material and political support" to Russia's war effort, said a BBC report. During the call with Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp, Wang said that NATO's accusation was biased and was "sowing discord". The Chinese foreign minister also warned Western alliances against stirring up confrontation. Kyiv said Thursday that it had seized a foreign cargo ship and detained its captain, alleging that the vessel had illegally exported Ukrainian grain from the annexed Crimean peninsula.

Since Russia's capture of swathes of agricultural land in Ukraine in early 2022, Kyiv has accused Moscow of illegally harvesting and shipping grain produced on occupied territory to third countries.

The Ukrainian prosecutor general's office said it had "seized" a foreign vessel in the Odesa region that had earlier exported agricultural products via the port of Sevastopol, a key military hub for Russia in the Black Sea.

The Security Services of Ukraine (SBU) said in a separate statement that it had detained the ship's captain, accusing him of violating rules on entering occupied territory.

It also claimed that the grain exported by the vessel, Usko Mfu, had been produced in southern Ukraine.

The charges carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison, the SBU said, while prosecutors identified him as a citizen of Azerbaijan, an ex-Soviet country in the South Caucasus.
