Graham Gomm, 63, was on remand for burglary offences but managed to escape from Hammersmith Hospital after being taken there by the prison staff on Thursday (Jul 18) after falling sick.

“Police officers from across the Met worked together after being alerted to Graham Gomm’s escape on 18 July. As a result of a proactive operation, officers arrested Gomm in Putney at about 8.30 am on 20 July," said the Met police.

“An investigation will continue into Mr Gomm escaping lawful custody.”

The police were alerted about Gomm's escape just after midnight on Thursday. He was wearing a grey t-shirt and a similar coloured tracksuit during the escape as the manhunt was launched.

Officers started by carrying out door-to-door searches in the neighbourhood before peering through the CCTV footage.

“Detectives are also concerned for Gomm’s welfare as he was undergoing medical care before he escaped. There is nothing to suggest that Gomm is a threat to the public.”

Workers in the United Kingdom under the new Labour government would be able to ignore emails outside office hours under sweeping rights reforms. The new guidance for employers is being led by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner under which employees would get the "right to switch off".

They would be spared from any obligation to check emails or WhatsApp messages or answer calls from the upper hierarchy, beyond work hours, weekends and while on holiday.

The Labour administration wants to change the culture of the workplace and help boost economic growth - one of the biggest poll planks of Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The move has been welcomed by the union bosses who believe that it will help employees decompress better.

“No one should be pushed to the brink because of their job. Ever increasing hours, pace and expectations at work are causing problems up and down the country. This is a recipe for burnt-out Britain," Trades Union Congress (TUC) General Secretary Paul Nowak was quoted as saying by i newspaper.

“So we welcome these measures to tackle work intensity. Introducing a right to switch off will let workers properly disconnect outside of working hours.”

Based on the controversial 'French style' reforms, the measure, however, would not be mandatory for firms and not enshrined in the new Employment Rights Bill, according to UK media reports.

The pace of wage growth for UK workers eased in the three months leading up to the end of May but remained at levels that would normally be too high for the Bank of England to keep inflation at its 2 per cent target. This comes as the BOE left interest rates unchanged.

Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed an average weekly earnings increase (excluding bonuses and adjustments) of 5.7 per cent (year on year). The earnings in total over the same period also increased by 5.7 per cent.

The figures were in step with the middle ground of what economists polled by Reuters had predicted. For the three months up to April, the annual rate of growth in regular pay was 6.0 per cent on average, while total earnings growth was 5.9 per cent. The Bank of England is due to announce its next interest rate decision in two weeks' time. After this week’s surprise inflation figures, financial markets see a roughly one-in-three chance of an August rate cut.

Furthermore, the Thursday announcement from the Office for National Statistics highlighted a delay in the changeover to a new edition of the Labour Force Survey, previously scheduled for September. Although wage increases have recently slowed, the trend toward higher pay has failed to materialise for many workers. Voting patterns suggest that a tightening labour market could lead to a pay squeeze for many households. The BoE should tread carefully.
