The United States-based Amazon is set to restructure its warehouse operations in the United Kingdom and plans to close three of its centres in the country’s Hemel Hempstead, Doncaster and Gourock, in the west of Scotland, which will impact at least 1,200 jobs. However, the workers will be given a chance to transfer to other Amazon locations, said the online retail giant on Tuesday. This comes days after the company said that it plans to lay off as many as 18,000 employees from its workforce.

The over 1,000 workers employed at the three aforementioned British warehouses will be given a chance to move their jobs internally and the workers at Hemel Hempstead and Doncaster will be moving to nearby centres including the one in Dunstable.

Virgin Orbit reported an “anomaly” in its rocket on Tuesday that stopped it from reaching orbit, ending Britain's attempt to become the first European country to launch a satellite into space. "We appear to have an anomaly that has prevented us from reaching orbit. We are evaluating the information," Virgin Orbit said.

Virgin's LauncherOne rocket was carried under the wing of a customised Boeing 747 dubbed "Cosmic Girl" for the "horizontal launch" mission, which departed from the seaside town of Newquay in southwest England. The rocket was later released over the Atlantic Ocean, as per Reuters.

The aircraft engineering company made the "anomaly" public, 10 minutes before midnight. Less than an hour after the rocket was launched from Cosmic Girl, a 747 jumbo plane modified to unleash LauncherOne at 35,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean.

This comes after the failure of a Vega-C rocket mission, which was built in Italy, in late December following lift-off from French Guiana.

Strikes are set to continue in the United Kingdom by workers and nurses demanding higher wage after meeting between trade unions and ministers failed on Monday which were aimed at ending stoppages across sectors from transport to healthcare.

On Wednesday, as planned around 10,000 ambulance workers will walk out, said the GMB union in a statement after meeting with Health Minister Steve Barclay did not result in a breakthrough.

"There was some engagement on pay - but not a concrete offer that could help resolve this dispute and make significant progress," said GMB national secretary Rachel Harrison.

In the view of pay increase failing to match with double-digit inflation, ambulance staff, rail workers and nurses have staged walkouts, and teachers are voting over the action.

Teaching unions, which will be announcing the strike ballots' result later this week, met with the education minister, while the unions representing nurses and ambulance workers held talks with the health minister. Meanwhile, the rail unions will hold talks with the transport minister.

The RCN, which represents the nurses, termed the talks with Barclay "bitterly disappointing". It added that there was a long way to go if ministers wished to stop strikes of nurses scheduled on January 18 and 19.

Unions Unite and Unison, which represent the health workers, slammed the approach of the government. Unite trade union national lead officer Onay Kasab, after holding a meeting with health minister Steve Barclay, said that the government clearly expressed its wish to discuss productivity savings in exchange for further pay awards.

"We're talking about people who are working well beyond their contracted hours anyway, just to get the job done. Today is an insult to our members,” he said.

The unions have announced that the strikes will be called off only if offers are made to resolve pay disputes of this year, as the government plans to focus on the increase in wages in the next financial year.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday said the talks being held between trade unions and ministers were a "positive development".

''I'm really pleased that union leaders accepted ministers' invitations to come in today to have discussions across the board, and that's a really positive development. And on pay, we've always said that the government is happy to talk about pay demands and pay issues that are anchored in what's reasonable, what's responsible, what's affordable for the country. But the most important thing is those talks are happening and let's try and sit down and find a way through,” said Sunak.

Britain is experiencing its worst flu season in ten years with emergency departments under tremendous stress, leading to hundreds of fatalities, according to the latest statistics.

The week before Christmas saw a 50 per cent increase in hospitalisations compared to the peak of the previous severe flu season, in 2017–18. Approximately 22,000 people died around that time, Daily Mail reported.

According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), flu admissions were 8.3 per 100,000 persons in the week ending January 1, down from 14.8 the week before -- the highest number in at least ten years.

With 61.8 per 100,000 for those 85 and older and 31.8 for those in the 75–84 age range, admissions remain higher for the older age groups. According to reports, since the swine flu outbreak in 2010–2011, the nation is on track to having its deadliest season.

The United Kingdom has now made it mandatory for Chinese travellers to produce a negative Covid test before entering the country, starting from 5 January 2023. In response to worries that Beijing is suppressing information on the new variants of the Covid virus, PM Rishi Sunak took the dramatic action of reintroducing these travel restrictions

He intervened just one day after health chiefs voted against checks, following high-level consultations with ministries and No. 10 officials.

Pre-departure testing, in Sunak's opinion, is now required due to a lack of credibility in Chinese infection data and vaccination protection. According to experts from Airfinity, a leading life science information and analytics company, 100,000 people have died and at least 18 million Chinese people have been sick this month alone. But, just a small number of cases have been documented, despite the closure of testing facilities by health officials.
