Queen Elizabeth II faced a potential murder threat during a 1983 visit to the United States, according to recently revealed FBI papers.&nbsp;Following the late Queen's death last year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)&nbsp;revealed a stockpile of information connected to her visits to the United States.

They demonstrate how the FBI, which assisted in ensuring the monarch's safety throughout her travels, was concerned about IRA threats, as reported by the BBC.

An assassination threat was made against a San Francisco police officer.&nbsp;As per&nbsp;the file, an officer who visited an Irish bar in San Francisco alerted federal authorities to a phone call from a man he met there.

In the words of the officer, the man&nbsp;informed him he was seeking vengeance for his daughter, who was "killed in Northern Ireland by a rubber bullet.

<h2>What was the threat?</h2>

The warning was issued on February 4, 1983, just a month before Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip, were scheduled to visit California.

"He was going to attempt to harm Queen Elizabeth and would do this either by dropping some object off the Golden Gate Bridge onto the Royal Yacht Britannia when it sails underneath, or would attempt to kill Queen Elizabeth when she visited Yosemite National Park," the document says.&nbsp;

In response to the threat, the Secret Service had planned to "close the walkways on the Golden Gate Bridge as the yacht nears". It is not clear&nbsp;what steps&nbsp;were taken at Yosemite, but the visit went ahead. No details of arrests were published by the FBI.

Following a Freedom of Information Act request from US media outlets, the 102-page cache was published to the Vault, the FBI's information website, on Monday.

Many of the late Queen's official visits to the United States, notably the 1983 visit to the West Coast, took place&nbsp;during heightened tensions in Northern Ireland as a result of the Troubles.

The late Queen was in New York City for America's Bicentennial celebrations in 1976.

<h2>What do the records show?</h2>

The records show how a summons was issued to a pilot for flying a tiny plane above Battery Park with a placard that said "England, Get out of Ireland."

The papers indicate how the FBI stayed watchful to what it perceived to be the true threat to the late Queen.

Lord Mountbatten, her second cousin, was killed&nbsp;in a 1979 IRA explosion off the coast of County Sligo, Republic of Ireland.

An official FBI letter noted, "the possibility of threats against the British Monarchy is ever-present from the Irish Republican Army (IRA)" ahead of the late Queen's personal visit to Kentucky in 1989.

It went on to say that "Boston and New York are requested to remain alert for any threats against Queen Elizabeth II on the part of IRA members and immediately furnish same to Louisville," in Kentucky.

The late Queen, who owned racehorses, is said to have visited Kentucky numerous times throughout her lifetime to take in the state's equestrian events, including the Kentucky Derby.

The late Queen was set to attend a Baltimore Orioles baseball game with President George H Bush during a state visit in 1991.

The FBI notified the Secret Service that "Irish" agents were on the loose.

The bureau told NBC News that "additional records" may exist in addition to those disclosed this week, but no schedule for their release was provided.

Renowned Islamic scholar and former professor at Oxford University, Tariq Ramadan, was acquitted of rape and sexual coercion charges by a Geneva Criminal Court on Wednesday (May 24). He was accused by a Swiss woman who has asked to be identified by an alias ‘Brigitte.’&nbsp;

<h2>About the case</h2>

The 60-year-old was accused of rape by a Swiss woman who alleged that the incident took place in a Geneva hotel in 2008 where she was subjected to&nbsp;brutal sexual assault, beatings and insults.&nbsp;

The alleged abuse took place on the night of October 28, 2008, when Brigitte, a fan of Ramadan, was invited by him for coffee after a conference. Ramadan, who is also a Swiss citizen, would have faced up to three years in prison if he was convicted. &nbsp;

<h2>What happened in the court?</h2>

In court, Brigitte also requested that a screen be put up so that she would not have to look at the man she claimed raped her. She also went on to detail the alleged attack in detail and how the two had exchanged messages before their meeting&nbsp;at the conference and book signing.&nbsp;

The Swiss woman also spoke about how she feared that she was going to die. Brigitte said she filed the lawsuit nearly a decade later after multiple allegations emerged against Ramadan in France. While he had also previously denied all the charges, the 60-year-old did admit that he had met the woman before and invited him to his hotel room.

The 60-year-old has since rejected these claims and said he is the victim of a “trap” and called the accusations against him politically motivated. Meanwhile, his French and Swiss lawyers questioned the Swiss woman about the inconsistencies around the dates of the alleged attack.&nbsp;

The prosecution argued that she could not have made up the alleged attack as Brigitte gave details to the judges which she would not have been able to do otherwise.&nbsp;Ramadan’s lawyer also called the charges against his client “crazy”.&nbsp;

During his final statements in court last week, Ramadan asked not to be tried on his “real or supposed ideology” and urged the judges not to be “influenced by the media and political noise”.

The verdict was announced following a week’s deliberation by the three judges in the court in Geneva.&nbsp;Brigitte's&nbsp;lawyers have said that they will appeal the verdict.

More cases to follow?

This case could just be one of many against Ramadan as French prosecutors are still assessing if the charges brought against the Islamic scholar should be taken to court.&nbsp;

He was first accused of rape in 2017&nbsp;by a French woman and after the case went public, more&nbsp;women came forward. As of 2020, Ramadan is facing at least five charges of rape, one of which was in Switzerland, while others are in France.&nbsp;

As per media reports, investigators have found hundreds of text messages he had sent to the women, some of which detail violent sexual fantasies. He also reportedly faces criminal rape complaints made by women in the United States. Notably, he had also spent nine months in detention in France before he was released&nbsp;in 2018.&nbsp;

Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan acquitted in Swiss rape trial

In the latest of several trials in Europe over migrant lorry deaths, France is set to try 19 men, allegedly accused of a people-smuggling plot that led to the killings of 39 Vietnamese migrants in the back of a lorry in the year 2019, a source close to the matter said on Wednesday.

The migrants succumbed to suffocation and lost their lives while being transported across the Channel to Britain in refrigerated containers.

The youngest victims who died in the tragedy were two 15-year-old boys.

The bodies of the deceased were found at a port near London, wrapped inside a sealed unit in October 2019.

On Tuesday, the French magistrates investigating the incident, ordered the trial of 19 alleged suspects, aged between 21 to 58 over the tragedy, said the source.

The source further added that the global probe indicates that the suspects, majorly of Vietnamese, French, Chinese, Algerian and Moroccan origin, are part of a large network that smuggles people from Vietnam to Europe.

As per the source, the suspects are accused of organising transport facilities for the migrants, driving taxis or arranging accommodation, and owning properties where they could hide them in the Paris region.

As per AFP reports, the wiretapped phone calls revealed that the suspects referred to their victims as "merchandise" or even "chickens".

These men will be on trial for facilitating the illegal entry of migrants, for enabling the stay of foreigners on French territory and collaborating together with a view to committing crimes which could land them in prison for up to 10 years, said the source.

Four will also be judged for manslaughter for failing to ensure duty of care during the smuggling operation, which could lead to three-year imprisonment.

<h2>Migrants willing to risk lives to reach UK</h2>

The cross-border investigation unveiled that migrants, before being driven to the Belgian port of Zeebrugge to cross the Channel, were loaded into a truck in northern France.

The incident highlighted how the migrants are willing to risk their lives to reach the United Kingdom.&nbsp;

The probe also revealed that some people pay around $40,000 to go on the perilous journey.&nbsp;

Post-mortem tests found the victims died from lack of oxygen and overheating.

<h2>'Illegal migrants to be detained and deported,'&nbsp;says Sunak</h2>

Earlier this year, UK PM Rishi Sunak vowed to resolve the issue of illegal migrants as the country recorded the arrival of more than 45,000 migrants to the shores on small boats.

As per the draft law, anyone who will arrive in the UK illegally, will not be allowed to claim asylum, Sunak said at a news conference.

"If you come here illegally, you can't claim asylum. You can't benefit from our modern slavery protections. You can't make spurious human rights claims and you can't stay," he added.

"We will detain those who come here illegally and then remove them in weeks, either to their own country if it is safe to do so. Or to a Safe Third Country like Rwanda and once you are removed, you will be banned as you are in America and Australia from ever re-entering our country," he stated.

"The current situation is neither moral nor sustainable. It cannot go on. And it's devastatingly unfair on those who most need our help, but can't get it as our asylum system is being overwhelmed by those travelling illegally across the channel," Sunak said.

In the parliament, Right-winger Braverman said that she was "confident that this bill is compatible with international obligations", despite earlier accepting that it "pushed the boundaries of international law".&nbsp;

A "super-fertile" mother in the UK conceived her second child just four weeks after her first, and she didn't realise it until the babies were born.&nbsp;Sophie Small, 30, gave birth to daughters Holly and Darcy in August 2020, mistaking the girls for twins at first.

Midwives were puzzled by the twins' disparities in size, with Darcy weighing 4 pounds, 2 ounces and Holly, who was delivered second, weighing a significantly heftier 6 pounds, 1 ounce, reported the New York Post.

Doctors then discovered that the daughters were conceived a month apart owing to superfetation, a condition in which a second pregnancy develops soon after the first.

Small told Kennedy News that her pregnancy was "horrific."

She had severe morning sickness and was hospitalised eight times in seven weeks.

“I was carrying two babies who were growing at different stages, but we didn’t know that,” the mom stated.

“They couldn’t work out why I was so sick. I was expecting twins but one was bigger than the other,” she added.

“They had their own sacs and placentas, so they could feed when they wanted to.&nbsp;But they [doctors] couldn’t work out why one twin was bigger than the other,”&nbsp;she further explained.

“They ask how many minutes apart they are, and I say, ‘Darcy is two minutes older and four weeks younger, while Holly was born two minutes after but is four weeks older.’ “

Small claims she knew she was "very fertile" since Oscar was conceived so quickly, and she believes she ovulated again when she was already pregnant with Holly.

<h2>What is superfetation?&nbsp;</h2>

Superfetation is the term used to describe the simultaneous occurrence of two pregnancies. Days or weeks after the first ovum (egg) is implanted in the womb, a second ovum is fertilised by sperm. Given that they may be delivered on the same day and during the same labour, babies born through superfetation are frequently thought of as twins, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/superfetation'">Healthline</a>.&nbsp;

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Tuesday (May 23) did a major U-turn and said that it expected growth this year for the UK economy. Just a month ago, the IMF had predicted a contraction.&nbsp;

Now, Britain's economy is expected to expand by 0.4 per cent in 2023, said IMF in its latest outlook document. The document cited weaker energy prices.

The institution ripped up its previous forecast in April for a 0.3-per cent contraction.

IMF director Kristalina Georgieva defended the U-turn in a London press conference.

Georgieva said that the U-turn was sparked by falling energy prices. This eased concerns over Brexit and improved financial stability following recent political turmoil and US banking sector woes.

She praised the UK for its 'decisive and responsible steps' in recent months which included overseeing a rescue deal by British bank HSBC for the British arm of collapsed US lender SVB.

'Highly uncertain' global economy

"We have gone through a very turbulent time over the last few years. We have experienced shock upon shock upon shock, and that has created exceptional uncertainty," the IMF head told reporters, who were also addressed by UK finance minister Jeremy Hunt.

"Our staff deserve credit for being agile in how we look at changing conditions... so we can give as clear a picture as we can, at a time when it is the foggiest we have seen in many decades," she said.

Georgieva warned about a 'highly uncertain' global economy but expressed hope that the US would soon conclude a deal to raise the debt ceiling and avoid a default.

"I look forward to a solution being found... Hopefully, we won't have to wait that long."

'Significant' slowdown

The IMF noted there had still been a "significant" UK slowdown from 2022 when the economy grew 4.1 per cent despite sky-high inflation and energy bills owing to the Ukraine war.

"Buoyed by resilient demand in the context of declining energy prices, the UK economy is expected to avoid a recession and maintain positive growth in 2023," read the IMF statement.

"Still, economic activity has slowed significantly from last year and inflation remains stubbornly high following the severe terms-of-trade shock due to Russia's war in Ukraine and, to some extent, labour supply scarring from the pandemic."

IMF also cautioned about this year's growth outlook which it said would be 'subdued'.

The IMF said the 2023 upgrade reflected "higher-than-expected resilience" in both demand and supply, alongside improved confidence in reduced post-Brexit uncertainty as well as lower energy costs.

The organisation added that the Windsor framework will "favourably impact" the outlook.

IMF does a U-turn, predicts economic rebound for UK

The Kerala Story has created a furore in the country since its release. The film has received an equal amount of support and disdain. While some have praised it, some have refused to screen it at cinemas in a bid to prevent communal harmony from being disrupted. Recently, protests erupted in UK against the screening of this movie. Molly Gambhir reports.

Gravitas: The Kerala Story sparks fire

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly is in the midst of a four-country trip to the Caribbean and South America and has recently come under fire for his choice of aircraft. At a time when the economy in the United Kingdom is not faring well and the country is facing a cost of living crisis, the minister chose to travel in luxury with the Embraer Lineage 1000E, reported The Guardian.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Best luxury jet money can buy’: Embraer Lineage 1000E</h2>

According to the media report, the jet costs more than 10,000 pounds (over $12,000) an hour to hire and includes several amenities like a lounge area with big-screen TV, a master suite complete with a queen-size bed, a private bathroom and a shower. The Embraer Lineage 1000E has been described as “one of the best luxury private jets money can buy” by Business Insider.&nbsp;

The aircraft from the German aviation company has also featured in the fleet of corporate jets and is a go-to private jet used by the billionaire Roy family in the hit TV show Succession. As per media reports, the ten-day trip that the British foreign secretary is on would cost the UK taxpayers about 348,000 pounds (approximately $431,078).&nbsp;

As of Monday, with a flying time of nearly 19 hours since Cleverly visited Jamaica, Colombia, and Chile, the private jet has already cost the taxpayers&nbsp;around 228,000 pounds (approx $282,520), reported The Mirror.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Ludicrous extravagance’: Opposition Labour Party on use of private jet</h2>

The opposition Labour Party has called the hire of Embraer Lineage 1000E&nbsp;a “ludicrous extravagance” and accused the UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s government of being out of touch with the public, as per The Guardian.&nbsp;

The shadow Attorney General, Emily Thornberry acknowledged that while travelling overseas is an essential part of the foreign secretary’s role, it does not justify his use of a luxury jet when British families are running out of ways to make ends meet.&nbsp;

“At a time when British families are running out of ways to make ends meet – James Cleverly thought it was appropriate to conduct this tour in the kind of luxury jet used by billionaires and pop stars, with British taxpayers footing the bill,” said Thornberry, as quoted by The Guardian.&nbsp;

She added, “This sort of ludicrous extravagance at the public expense just shows how out of touch Rishi Sunak’s government are. No wonder their response to the cost of living crisis has been so utterly hopeless when they have such little concept of what ordinary life is like for people in our country.”

According to the media report, between the beginning of 2021 and the end of last year, foreign secretaries -&nbsp;Dominic Raab,&nbsp;Liz Truss and Cleverly -&nbsp;have hired private jets or used one of the government’s fleets of ministerial planes to travel overseas on 31 separate occasions. The cost of which, as per The Guardian, would amount to 4.6 million pounds (approx $5.7 million).&nbsp;

Not to mention the cost of the members of the media or delegations of businesspeople who accompanied the ministers on these trips, which is&nbsp;also paid for by the UK taxpayers. The number of people travelling with Cleverly was not known.&nbsp;

<h2>Cleverly’s office responds</h2>

“The foreign secretary’s job requires him to travel abroad to pursue UK interests. This was the most time-effective way to do this in this instance,” said a spokesperson from the foreign, commonwealth and development office, as per The Guardian. The statement added, “Value for money is taken into account in all travel decisions and costs are regularly published for transparency.”

The spokesperson&nbsp;also said that the ministers use commercial flights where practical and security considerations allow.&nbsp;

Over 10&nbsp;months after 18 water buffaloes entered their home and took a dip in the $86,000 (£70,000) swimming pool, damaging it and the nearby garden in the process, a couple in the UK has&nbsp;finally received compensation from the insurance company.&nbsp;

According to a Guardian report, NFL Mutual, the insurance company, finally agreed to the full $31,000 repair bill, which was still short of the previous two quotes given by the Smiths'.&nbsp;

“We apologise for the delay in paying this claim and in particular, the initial wait for an inspector’s visit, which took too long and fell short of our usual standards. We have a duty to all of our members to ensure we validate the cost of claims and in this instance, we needed to gain further assurance around the costs involved in repairing the damage," the insurance company said.

<h2>Fire brigade thought it was a hoax call</h2>

Last year in July, both&nbsp;Andy and Lynette Smith were left shocked when they saw the muscular animals, each weighing over 600 kg, escape from a&nbsp;breeds farm and arrive on their property. The herd was able to escape the farm after an electric fence failed and they were able to scale a wooden fence and hedge separating the field from Smiths' garden.&nbsp;

“When my wife went to make the morning tea, she glanced out of the kitchen window and saw eight buffaloes in the pool,” said Andy Smith.

“She called 999 and was told the fire brigade doesn’t accept hoax calls. It took some persuading to get them to take us seriously. When they arrived, one of the buffaloes, spooked by their hi-vis jackets, headed straight at them.”
