The recent diagnosis increased by almost a third from 21 to 28 in every 100,000 people between 2007-09 and 2017-19, according to Cancer Research UK (CRUK) figures, with a 57 per cent&nbsp;rise among the over-80s and a 7 per cent&nbsp;rise in those aged 25 to 49.

The gap in awareness of ultraviolet (UV) light and skin cancer risk is likely the cause of the difference in skin cancer rates between younger and older generations.

According to the projections, 20,800 cases will be diagnosed in the UK this year, of which close to 17,000 are avoidable. Almost 90 per cent&nbsp;of melanoma is caused by too much exposure to UV light, which can damage DNA in the skin.

Beyond generational awareness, factors like population growth, ageing demographics, and increased recognition of skin cancer symptoms all contribute to the rise in cases.

“The sunburn doesn’t only happen when it’s hot, it can happen on cooler or cloudier days too," Dr Knight added.

A man accused of helping Hong Kong authorities gather intelligence in the UK has died under unexplained circumstances, British police reported on Tuesday (May 21.)

37-year-old Matthew Trickett was among three men charged earlier this month with agreeing to engage in collecting information, surveillance and acts of deception that were likely&nbsp;assist the Hong Kong intelligence service from late 2023 to May 2 this year.&nbsp;

The prosecutors further alleged that the accused forced entry into a UK residential address on May 1.

All three men had been bailed and were due to appear at London’s Central Criminal Court for a hearing on Friday (May 24).

According to British media reports, Trickett was formerly a Royal Marine who worked as a Home Office immigration enforcement officer. He was reportedly the director of a security consultancy too.

Trickett, along with 38-year-old Chi Leung (Peter) Wai, and 63-year-old Chung Biu Yuen were detained. The men appeared at a brief court hearing to confirm their identities on May 13.

Trickett’s lawyer, Julian Hayes, expressed his shock at Tuesday’s news and stated that he was supporting Trickett’s family.&nbsp;

He declined to comment further due to the ongoing investigations. As of late Tuesday, a police cordon remained in place at Grenfell Park in Maidenhead, with several officers stationed near a black forensics tent close to a children’s playground.

However, Chinese authorities in both the UK and Hong Kong have condemned the charges, saying they were the latest in a series of groundless accusations that the UK government has leveled against China.

Hong Kong’s government demanded that the UK provide full details on the allegations.

Britain announced on Tuesday (May 21) that victims of the contaminated blood scandal will receive interim compensation payments worth £210,000 ($267,000) each.

John Glen, the British Paymaster General acknowledged that people were “still dying each week from infections” and might fear that they would not live to receive compensation.

Subsequently, Glen said that before the full scheme’s establishment, interim payments would be made to living infected beneficiaries within 90 days, starting in the summer “so that they can reach those who need it so urgently most”.

Additionally, John Glen told the UK parliament that the government will establish the ‘Infected Blood Compensation Authority’ under interim chair Robert Francis, a senior lawyer, to supervise the compensation scheme.

The announcement comes a day after a bombshell report blamed the National Health Service (NHS) and successive governments for failures that resulted in more than 3,000 deaths.

<h2>Who will be eligible for the compensation?</h2>

Those eligible for interim payments include living-infected beneficiaries, people registered with existing support schemes, those who register with the support scheme before the final compensation scheme becomes operational, and the estates of those who pass away between now and payments being made.

Those who have been infected or affected as a consequence of the scandal are eligible for the final compensation scheme.

This would include people who have been directly or indirectly infected by NHS blood, blood products or tissue contaminated with HIV or hepatitis C or have developed a chronic infection from blood contaminated with hepatitis B.

Where an infected person has died but would have been eligible under these criteria, compensation will be paid to their estate.

As per the Infected Blood Inquiry, more than 30,000 people in the United Kingdom were infected with viruses like hepatitis and HIV after they were transfused the tainted blood between the 1970s and early 1990s.

Glen added that under the main compensation scheme, relatives and friends of victims would also be able to claim compensation.

The compensation payments will not be taxable.

In his statement, John Glen said full details of the compensation scheme will be published on the government’s website on Tuesday.

He confirmed there will be a wide-ranging debate in the House of Commons next month on the findings of the Infected Blood Inquiry.

Several MPs have been arrested for such offences since the last general election in 2019.

And Conservative Crispin Blunt was arrested on suspicion of rape in October 2023. He continues to sit as an independent MP.

Several other MPs from both sides of the house have been suspended from their parties over allegations of sexual misconduct that did not warrant police action.

Labour former minister Chris Bryant said the move was "long overdue".

"Parliament should be no different from any other workplace," he said.

Marius Gustavson, a 46-year-old Norwegian, pleaded guilty to multiple offenses, including five counts of intentionally causing severe harm to others. 
 
During a sentencing hearing at London's Old Bailey, one of Gustavson's victims characterised him as a "lunatic," "an arch-manipulator" and "a butcher".

Gustavson led a "gruesome and grisly" operation, according to Judge Mark Lucraft.

The judge also said that Gustavson's business in severe bodily changes was "extremely dangerous," according to the BBC, describing some of the treatments as "little short of human butchery."

His pay-per-view website promoted several services, including limb freezing, penis removals, and castrations.

In the videos, individuals who appear consenting are seen by Gustavson and his accomplices undergoing physical alterations in London apartments and hotels.

Some of them were as young as 16, according to the BBC report.

In 2020, a man came forward to police and disclosed the operations that had been performed on him.

He was electrocuted while tied to a bed. He also had his testicles clamped.

He added that Gustavson had branded him with the initials "EM," which stands for "eunuch maker."

"We suggest that diagnosis - if it exists - may explain why it is Mr Gustavson acted as he did to have his own body maimed and mutilated, but does not explain why he made a lucrative business out of mutilating others," barrister Caroline Carberry KC was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Thirty-nine-year-old Ann with partner McDonagh used to follow a similar pattern for eating free meals at different restaurants in Great Britain's Wales.

Several videos of the diners have gone viral on social media. Mostly, the duo was accompanied by other people claimed as their family members. According to a few family restaurants, the two used to follow the same procedure with premeditation and continued to rob multiple restaurants.&nbsp;

Two dogs that fatally attacked a grandmother in Britain's Essex have been identified as the banned XL bullies, police confirmed Friday (Feb 9). The 68-year-old lady was attacked on Saturday (Feb 3) while she was visiting her grandson at a Jaywick home. The attack on Esther Martin only ended after police officers shot the animals dead. Now, post-mortem examinations have revealed that the dogs were indeed XL bullies after much speculation about their breed.

The news comes as new rules came into effect on owning American XL bully dogs, which amounts to a virtual ban on the breed. In England and Wales, owning the breed without an exemption certificate has been outlawed. 
The rules stipulate that registered XL bullies be kept on a lead and muzzled in public. Scotland will introduce similar ban later this year.

The owner of the dog, 39-year-old Ashley Warren has been arrested by police on suspicion of dangerous dog offences and released on police bail until March.

“I know there has been a huge amount of speculation about the breed and type of dog involved here, but it was really important we got that information right and established the facts," said Chief Superintendent Stuart Weaver.

"We owe it to Esther and her family to ensure we are thorough, professional and, above all, fair," he added.

<h2>Owner calls for eradication of the breed</h2>

The owner is now calling for the eradication of the breed following the death of Esther Martin. Warren, from Jaywick, said: “Never in a million years did I see [the dogs] as a risk.

“If my dogs did that to her, when I had never seen anything but love from them, then that breed just has a killer switch," he added.

A US teacher is making headlines after claiming that she can type faster than most people despite being born with just two fingers and two toes. The 35-year-old teacher, Jessica Cummings, from Foster City, California, has one finger in each hand and one toe in each foot. Despite facing problems while doing everyday tasks such as eating, drinking, working and driving, she has learned to adapt. She also boats a typing speed of 90 words per minute, more than most of the people, the Mirror reported.

Four London teenagers who were involved in the murder of two other teenagers in November 2022 are facing life sentences. The attackers, while killing a member of the rival gang, also ended up fatally stabbing one of their own members. The group of five attackers, who arrived in a Nissan car, first rammed Charlie Bartolo’s motorbike and then jumped out to stab the 16-year-old boy repeatedly.

The incident took place in Sewell Road, Abbey Wood, southeast London on 26 November 2022.

As they attacked Charlie, one of the members accidentally stabbed 16-year-old Kearne Solank, one of their own members, in the shoulder. Kearne was later abandoned by the four attackers at a location one mile away from where Charlie was fatally attacked.

They left Kearne inside the car in Thamesmead. Two separate calls were made to 999 within six minutes of each other, with the two teenagers being reported dead.

The incident came as a result of an inter-gang rivalry between members of Thamesmead’s T-Block gang and rivals from Abbey Wood. The four teenagers were later charged with murdering two boys.

He revealed that the second call was about Kearne Solanke and he was pronounced dead on the spot by the paramedics.

The group of five attackers, who arrived in a Nissan car, first rammed Charlie Bartolo’s motorbike and then jumped out to stab the 16-year-old boy repeatedly. The incident took place in Sewell Road, Abbey Wood, southeast London on 26 November 2022. As they attacked Charlie, one of the members accidentally stabbed 16-year-old Kearne Solank, one of their own members, in the shoulder. Kearne was later abandoned by the four attackers at a location one mile away from where Charlie was fatally attacked. They left Kearne inside the car in Thamesmead. Two separate calls were made to 999 within six minutes of each other, with the two teenagers being reported dead. The incident came as a result of an inter-gang rivalry between members of Thamesmead’s T-Block gang and rivals from Abbey Wood. The four teenagers were later charged with murdering two boys.
