Syrian President Bashar al-Assad made his first trip to an Arab country since the beginning of the civil war 11 years ago when he arrived in United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Friday. According to a number of experts, this marks a potential boost in Syria’s relations with its Arab neighbouring countries.

In a statement posted on its social media pages, the office of the Syrian president said that he met Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, vice-president and prime minister of the UAE and the ruler of Dubai to discuss expanding bilateral relations between the two countries.

Syria was expelled from the 22-member Arab League around 11 years ago and it led to a boycott from the Arab neighbours. Since then, the civil war has claimed a huge number of lives and it has also displaced almost half of Syria’s population who have fled to various different countries.

However, against the backdrop of the war between Russia and Ukraine, the visit is a clear indication that the Arab countries are ready to re-engage with Syria. Assad, earlier, extended his complete support to Russian president Vladimir Putin regarding his invasion of Ukrainian cities.

The UAE reopened its official embassy in Syria back in 2018 and that was considered as a positive sign from the Arab nation. In 2021, UAE foreign minister flew to Damascus for a private meeting with Assad and it was the first time that the country’s top diplomat has visited Syria since 2011.

The United Arab Emirates and in particular Dubai has a reputation for being a playground for the rich. With Russian oligarchs being sanctioned, is the UAE becoming a safe haven for Russian billionaires? Ghadi Francis tells you more on The West Asia Post.

UK PM Boris Johnson said it was a terrible mistake to let Putin get away in 2014. He is likely to travel to Saudi and UAE this week.

Boris Johnson's admits to West's mistake, backs oil drilling

As western countries look for alternate sources of oil, British PM Boris Johnson will travel to Saudi as part of his drive to help lessen the west dependency on Russia.

Saudi, UAE now key players in stabilising oil markets

Reports suggest that Saudi Arabia and UAE leaders have declined calls with Biden. The Gulf nations have the capacity to pump more oil to ease supply fears but relations with the US have chilled under Biden. Ghadi Francis brings you more on this on The West Asia Post.

The West Asia Post | Another foreign policy failure for Biden?

In a bid to compensate for the US ban on Russian oil, President Joe Biden has reached out to checkered oil regimes that he and former leaders of the country spectacularly snubbed or sanctioned in the past. These include United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Iran, Venezuela, and Saudi Arabia.

While the Biden administration is calling it a diplomatic masterstroke and saying it is part of a larger game plan, analysts are slamming the bizarre diplomacy which they believe will backfire.

They also believe he risks accusations of propping up authoritarian leaders and undermining his own battle for democracy.

US Strategic Petroleum Reserve levels fell last week to their lowest since July 2002, as the Biden administration had already approved releases in November as part of a larger effort to boost the US fuel supply.

Additional supply from OPEC could compensate for some supply shortfalls created by disruption to Russia's oil sales by economic sanctions imposed by the United States and other governments. But not for all of it.

At the Oman Academy ground 1, UAE exhibited a clinical performance to reach the ICC Men's T20 World Cup for the second time.

The last time UAE made it to the global showpiece event was in 2014. For Ireland, the only Full Member nation in Qualifier A, it will be their seventh appearance at the global showpiece event.

The two winning teams took the 13th and 14th spots for the tournament in Australia later this year, with the last two places to be decided at the Qualifier B in July.

Chasing an imposing victory target of 176 to win, Nepal was rocked by the early strikes of UAE pacer Junaid Siddique.

The quick, was in top gear, removing the top-three Nepal batters in his three-over spell. A sensational opening over saw Siddique sending back opener Aasif Sheikh and one-down batter Lokesh Bam off two successive balls.

Nepal was 3-2 in six balls and the chase looked a tall order. Batting first after losing the toss, Ireland posted a total of 165/7. Gareth Delany top-scored with a masterfully constructed 32-ball 47.

Oman began the Powerplay well as Ireland's usually reliable opening pair - Paul Stirling and Andrew Balbirnie - failed them this time. However, Delany and Harry Tector erected an 82-run fourth-wicket stand to put the pressure back on the hosts.

Tector was the aggressor early on, but once Delany settled in, fireworks ensued on both ends of the wicket. Skipper Zeeshan Maqsood in particular endured a difficult afternoon with the ball as Delany devoured his only over, smashing three consecutive sixes.

Bilal Khan had dismissed both the openers earlier and Kaleemullah matched his strike partner's efforts by plotting Tector's demise for a well-made 35.

Oman matched Ireland's efforts in the batting Powerplay, losing both their openers cheaply. Shoaib Khan and Zeeshan Maqsood (28) steadied the ship with a 40-run partnership.

Shoaib scored at a healthy pace to keep the asking rate in check. They dealt with the Irish spinners pro-actively, effusing shades of Ireland's game-changing fourth-wicket partnership earlier in the day.

But once Josh Little scalped Shoaib's wicket in the 11th over, Oman's batting roster crumbled. Khurram Nawaz was dismissed in the same over. Khawar Ali and Naseem Khushi soon followed suit.

Receiving no support from the other end, Maqsood was tasked with winning the match all by himself. His wicket in the 15th over put an end to all hopes of a successful Omani run-chase.

Gold bars from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and jewellery from India, are two key items that are getting significant duty cuts under the India-UAE Free trade agreement, which was signed amid much fanfare in Delhi on Friday.

Commerce Secretary B V R Subrahmanyam speaking to a group of reporters on Saturday said, "We are a major importer of gold. India imports 800 tons of gold every year. To UAE, we have given Tariff rate quota (TRQ) of 200 tons, with tariff in perpetuity will be one per cent less, than whatever is the tariff charged to the rest of the world".

This gives UAE 1 per cent price advantage in gold bars, which gives the west Asian country an upper hand in gold trade with India.

On India's side, the big gain is that Indian jewellery gets zero duty access to the UAE market. UAE currently has a 5 per cent duty on Indian jewellery which will be done away with when the FTA comes into implementation in the first week of May.

Overall, the gems and jewellery sector will get an edge with international jewellery operations, which is expected to shift to India from Singapore and Hong Kong.

Secretary Subrahmanyam explained, "UAE becomes a very big entry point for us to enter into rest of the world, Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia. The jewellery sector is gung ho".

This is India's first comprehensive trade agreement in a decade and under the deal, duty gets eliminated on 80 per cent of tariff lines.

UAE Economy Minister Abdulla bin Touq Al-Marri in response to WION's question after the signing of the pact said, "Everyone is on reform part for the economy given that we have gone through pandemic that has hit the world...this agreement comes at an early stage of the year, it really gives recovery for the economy"

Substantial net gains for India have particularly been in labour-intensive industries - gems and jewellery, textiles, leather, footwear, sports goods, plastics, furniture, agricultural and wood products, engineering products, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, and automobiles. Indian exporters will gain market access in the UAE but also provide wider access to the much larger Arab and African markets.

Highlighting how the pact opens markets for Indian goods, Indian trade minister Piyush Goyal said, "UAE, over the year, has built a reputation of a trading hub on which people have the faith that it works seamlessly, very smoothly and created the strong backbone of financial systems, port system, logistics chain and deepening of exports will certainly help us gain access to other countries".

Interestingly, a separate annexe on pharmaceuticals has been incorporated to facilitate access to Indian pharmaceutical products by giving them regulatory approval in 90 days.

Watch | India-UAE trade deal: Negotiations were concluded in less than 3 months, says PM Modi

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a virtual summit with Abu Dhabi crown prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during which India-UAE free trade agreement was signed.

Archaeologists in Abu Dhabi have unearthed evidence of the country’s earliest known buildings, dating back more than 8,500 years.

The startling discovery by the experts from the Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) was made on Ghagha island, west of Abu Dhabi.

The structures unearthed are “simple round rooms” and have stone walls that are still preserved up to a height of almost a meter (3.3 feet), the press release says.

The stone structures likely housed the country’s first communities, shedding new light on the early chapters of the country's rich history, the team said.

It was previously believed that long-distance maritime trade routes, which developed during the Neolithic period, acted as an impetus for early settlements in the area, but the latest discovery proves that Neolithic settlements existed before then.

The latest discovery has revealed that the settlements were drawn to the local economic and environmental conditions that led to the first settled life in what is now the United Arab Emirates, the archaeologists said.

It means that rather than being arid and inhospitable, the islands were in a sense a ‘Fertile Coast’, the archaeologists said.

“These archaeological finds have shown that people were settling and building homes here 8,500 years ago. The discoveries on Ghagha island highlight that the characteristics of innovation, sustainability and resilience have been part of the DNA of the inhabitants of this region for thousands of years,” HE Mohamed Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, said in a statement.

“The finds reinforce an appreciation of history, as well as the deep cultural connections between the people of the UAE and the sea. We are also reminded that there is still much to discover across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and that it is vitally important we continue working to discover, preserve and protect our invaluable heritage for current and future generations to learn more about our ancestral past,” he added.

The previous record for oldest known buildings in the UAE was held by discoveries on the island of Marawah, also off the coast of Abu Dhabi, where the world's oldest pearl was found in 2017.
