On Friday (July 12), the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, announced that X was "in breach" of the Digital Services Act (DSA), a new regulatory framework aimed at ensuring better oversight of online content. The act came into effect earlier this year.

The preliminary findings of an investigation, which began last year, highlighted concerns about a policy implemented after Musk's $44 billion acquisition of the company two years ago. This policy permits anyone to pay for a blue checkmark, previously reserved for verified users.

X will have an opportunity to defend itself, but if the EU’s findings are confirmed, the company could face fines of up to 6 per cent of its total worldwide turnover.&nbsp;

In 2021, Twitter, as it was then known, reported revenues of $5.1 billion.

Brussels also noted that X’s practices have not complied with the DSA in several areas, including prohibiting the use of "dark patterns" — deceptive techniques used to manipulate user behaviour — and ensuring transparency in advertising and data access for researchers.

The recent call by Murthy for a warning label is part of broader concerns around growing mental health problems among youngsters stemming from the use of social media, reports Reuters.

Although social media companies such as TikTok, Snap, and Meta Platforms (the parent company of Facebook and Instagram) have yet to comment on Murthy's proposal, they have already got into hot water with policymakers over online child safety.

Previously, in January, US Senators&nbsp;grilled the CEOs&nbsp;of the three companies about online child safety. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham had even accused them of having "blood on your hands," for failing to protect young users from sexual predators.

"We have notified the affected users and in the interest of transparency, we are publishing the takedown orders here. We call on the Election Commission to publish all of its takedown orders going forward."&nbsp;

The election body of India reportedly said that the posts in question were in breach of Clause (2) of Part I of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), guidelines issued by the ECI to ensure free and fair elections.&nbsp;

According to the Clause (2),&nbsp;“Criticism of other political parties, when made, shall be confined to their policies and programme, past record and work. Parties and Candidates shall refrain from criticism of all aspects of private life, not connected with the public activities of the leaders or workers of other parties. Criticism of other parties or their workers based on unverified allegations or distortion shall be avoided.”

The election body also mentioned that the posts violated paragraph 9 (iii) of the Commissioner’s advisory to all national and state-recognised political parties on March 1, 2024.&nbsp;“No aspect of the private life, not connected with the public activities, of the leaders or workers of other parties is to be criticised. Low level personal attacks to insult the rivals shall not be made," it read.&nbsp;

"It is impossible to read the complaint and not conclude that X Corp is far more concerned about CCDH's speech than it is its data collection methods," he added.

X Corp, as per Reuters, has expressed its intention to appeal the decision, which is seen as a setback for Musk, known for championing free speech.&nbsp;

Since acquiring Twitter in October 2022, Musk has faced criticism for allowing hate speech and misinformation on the platform.

Imran Ahmed, CEO of CCDH, welcomed the decision, stating that it reaffirms the group's right "to hold accountable social media companies for decisions they make behind closed doors."

Roberta Kaplan, a lawyer for CCDH, remarked that the ruling shows Musk "cannot bend the rule of law to his will."

In the lawsuit filed last July, X had accused CCDH of violating its user contract by cherry-picking data and creating false reports about hate speech and extremism on X.&nbsp;

Calling it a "scare campaign", X had alleged that the non-profit was driving away advertisers and caused tens of millions of dollars in damages.

It also argued that the non-profit could have left the platform if it didn't like Musk's policy changes.

The court ruled that CCDH could not have anticipated Musk's takeover of Twitter and subsequent policy changes when it signed up with the platform.

However, Breyer agreed that X's desire to staunch criticism was "entirely reasonable from a business point of view."

The ruling also dismissed X's claims against the European Climate Foundation (ECF), which was accused of conspiring with CCDH. ECF's lawyer welcomed the dismissal, calling Musk's lawsuit "frivolous".

The lawsuit, citing a recent biography, claims that Musk ensured the executives could not resign from the company before he fired them in the immediate aftermath of the takeover.

The executives claim that they were denied severance pay and that they are owed one year's salary and hundreds of thousands of stock options.

"Because Musk decided he didn't want to pay plaintiffs' severance benefits, he simply fired them without reason, then made up (a) fake cause and appointed employees of his various companies to uphold his decision."

"This is the Musk playbook: to keep the money he owes other people, and force them to sue him," they state in the 39-page lawsuit.&nbsp;

They also allege that their efforts to "appropriately and vigorously" represent the interests of Twitter's public shareholders during Musk's attempt to back out of the deal led to Musk vowing revenge against them.&nbsp;

"For their efforts, Musk vowed a lifetime of revenge," says the lawsuit.

In a separate case, Agrawal, Gadde, and Segal are suing Musk to be reimbursed for the costs of litigation, investigations, and congressional inquiries related to their former roles at Twitter.

In addition, X faces two proposed class actions demanding severance payments of at least $500 million for laid-off workers after Musk's acquisition, and a third lawsuit from six former senior managers making similar claims. X has denied wrongdoing.

The SEC investigation pertains to all of Musk's purchases of Twitter stock in 2022 as well as his statements and filings with market regulators, court documents stated.

Musk took part in two half-day depositions in July with the SEC, which told the court it has since received "thousands of documents" that have raised questions they want him to answer.

Musk's objections to the latest deposition included an accusation that the SEC is using its power to "harass" him, the commission said in the filing.

"The SEC has already taken Mr. Musk's testimony multiple times in this misguided investigation -- enough is enough," Musk attorney Alex Spiro said in reply to an AFP inquiry.

But the SEC had argued that "Musk's ongoing refusal to comply with the SEC's administrative subpoena is hindering and delaying the SEC staff's investigation to determine whether violations of the federal securities laws have occurred," according to court documents.
