Kemal Kilicdaroglu is challenging Turkish President Erdogan, who has been in power for 20 years. A run-off election will take place on 28 May if neither candidate receives more than 50 per cent&nbsp;of the vote on Sunday (May 14).

Twitter CEO Elon Musk defended the censoring in a tweet to critic Matt Yglesias. Yglesias on Saturday quipped that "Twitter Files" will ultimately report on the incident. “Did your brain fall out of your head, Yglesias? The choice is have Twitter throttled in its entirety or limit access to some tweets. Which one do you want?” Musk tweeted.

Turkish social media was flooded with remarks from users who were dissatisfied with the state of search and rescue operations in their areas after the devastating earthquake.&nbsp;

Kilicdaroglu was named the six-party opposition alliance's presidential candidate in March. For a very long time, he has been stuck in Erdogan's shadow and failed to come out since taking the centre-left CHP's reins in 2010.&nbsp;

A former civil servant, Kilicdaroglu entered parliament in 2002 with the CHP, which was established by modern Turkey's founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and has struggled to reach beyond its secularist grassroots towards conservatives.

He has sought to grab the attention of voters who are apparently disillusioned by Erdogan's rhetoric and perceived economic mismanagement, promising economic prosperity.&nbsp;

In 2009, he lost to Erdogan's ally in his bid to become mayor of Istanbul. He then lost every national election to the president's right-wing AKP. But this time, he is vying to become head of&nbsp;one of NATO's most strategic states.&nbsp;

<h2>Kilicdaroglu accuses Russia&nbsp;</h2>

Kilicdaroglu even accused Russia of spreading "deep fakes" ahead of this weekend's crucial general election. He said on Twitter: "Dear Russian friends. You are behind the montages, conspiracies, deep fakes and tapes that were exposed in this country yesterday," he said without providing details.

"If you want our friendship after May 15, get your hands off the Turkish state. We are still in favour of cooperation and friendship," he added.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Kremlin denied the allegations that it is meddling in the presidential election campaign. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, "We strongly reject such statements. Taking to Twitter, Kilicdaroglu addressed "Russian friends" and said, "You are behind the montages, conspiracies, deep fakes and tapes that were exposed in this country yesterday." He did not provide any details.

In recent months, even as Russia faces criticism from various nations, Moscow and Ankara have maintained close ties. Erdogan has also, at times, played the role of a mediator, talking to both Russia and Ukraine.

In recent days, disinformation has added a dark note to the pivotal elections that on Sunday will decide if Erdogan — who has been Turkey's President since 2014 — will remain in power.

Recently, at a huge rally, Recep Tayyip Erdogan played a 14-second clip which allegedly was proof that his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu has formed a union with "terrorists"&nbsp;and outlawed Kurdish militants. The Turkish president seemed to suggest that his opponents were behind the confrontations that erupted a day earlier when people threw stones at a key opposition figure in the eastern city of Erzurum. It is a stronghold of president's AK Party (AKP). The voting is slated to take place on May 14. According to opinion polls, Erdogan faces biggest challenge of his career in upcoming elections.

"They (the opposition) are trying to defame our cities shamelessly by making a scene with their own provocations," Erdogan said, without making direct reference to the events in Erzurum. Erdogan was speaking during a rally in the western town of Edirne.

"They are looking for a cover for their prospective defeat in the elections by provoking and insulting people," he added.

Erdogan's words are being seen as an attempt to shore up his appeal among conservative and nationalist voters.&nbsp;

Protesters threw stones at Ekrem Imamoglu, Mayor of Istanbul on Sunday. Imamoglu is a member of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP). Imamoglu will be vice president if opposition's Kemal Kilicdaroglu wins presidential vote.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu appeared to take Erdogan's line and blamed the opposition for violence in Erzurum.

He claimed that Istanbul mayor's wife had provoked the crowds by making a 'V' sign at another rally last week. Soylu said that the gesture referred to Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which is outlawed in Turkey.

"People of Erzurum have high sensitivity on nationalism. If you go to these cities and provoke them over their sensitivities, then God forbid," Soylu said in a live broadcast late on Sunday.

"We will improve the investment further with a structure based on a free-market economy integrated with the world," the ruling party's manifesto said. It added that the party is aiming for annual growth of 5.5 per cent in 2024-2028 and a GDP of $1.5 trillion by the end of 2028.

In the race to retain the presidency, Erdogan will be up against the main opposition alliance candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu. A survey by pollster Metropoll says that 42.6 per cent of respondents would vote for Kilicdaroglu and 41.1 per cent for Erdogan in the first round of voting.

Earlier, following the devastating earthquake on February 6, there were speculations that the election date might change. However, Erdogan said that the schedule for polls will remain the same.

Turkey will be holding its elections as per schedule despite the devastating February 6 earthquake, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Wednesday. Erdogan said the vote will be held on May 14.&nbsp;

"(Turkish) people will do what is necessary on May 14," he told his ruling party lawmakers in the parliament in Ankara.

The death toll from the earthquake has surpassed the 50,000-mark in Syria and Turkey. Rehabilitation efforts are on for millions of people who were displaced in the aftermath of the quake.&nbsp;

Erdogan had come up with May 14 as the date for the crucial elections some time back. However, following the quake that has killed more than 45,000 people in Turkey alone, speculations were rife that the date for the vote might be pushed forward.&nbsp;

With the upcoming elections, Erdogan hopes to stay in power until 2028.&nbsp;

Erdogan has declared a three-month state of emergency across 11 quake-hit provinces. With strong tremors still happening now and then, the likelihood of campaigning in the area seems extremely unlikely.

"They are trying to take back the election we won. Maybe you are upset but never lose your hope," he told thousands of supporters on the outskirts of Istanbul following the ruling.&nbsp;

Imamoglu narrowly defeated the candidate of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in the March 31 local elections to take control of Turkey's biggest city.&nbsp;

It was a rare electoral defeat for Erdogan, himself a former mayor of the city, which has been in the hands of the AKP and its predecessors for 25 years.&nbsp;

But the AKP has refused to accept defeat, saying there were "irregularities and corruption" in the vote.&nbsp;

Imamoglu won by just 13,000 votes but was confirmed after two weeks of recounts in April.&nbsp;

The soft-spoken former district mayor had vowed to heal political divisions and reach across party lines.&nbsp;

But Istanbul, with 16 million residents, is Turkey's economic engine and controls a major chunk of public spending.

Erdogan once said winning Istanbul was like winning the entire country.

The loss of the mayorship in Istanbul, along with a more resounding defeat in the capital Ankara, reflected widespread concern over the deteriorating economy.&nbsp;

'Downright dictatorship'

The CHP, which had previously called Erdogan a "bad loser", said it was holding an emergency meeting after the election body's announcement.

The party's deputy chair, Onursal Adiguzel, who represents Istanbul in the national assembly, said the ruling was "neither democratic nor legitimate".&nbsp;

"Going to the polls against the AKP is allowed, but winning is forbidden... This is downright dictatorship," he tweeted.&nbsp;

Imamoglu said he would travel to Ankara on Tuesday to meet with party leaders.&nbsp;

"I dont even know what to say. The lawlessness is so obvious," a female supporter told AFP ahead of his speech in Istanbul.&nbsp;

"If there is no rule of law... they will trigger a civil war."

The defeated mayoral candidate, former prime minister Binali Yildirim, said he hoped the re-run would "be beneficial for our city".&nbsp;

Erdogan presented the local elections as a matter of national survival, campaigning heavily even though he was not running himself.

For his supporters, Erdogan remains the strong leader that Turkey needs as it faces internal and international security threats -- while also speaking for religiously conservative Turks who have felt sidelined.

His critics say he has undermined the rule of law with a sweeping crackdown on dissent and sewn division by portraying his opponents as enemies of the state.

The AKP still won the most seats nationwide in the local elections, but it has been damaged by Turkey's first recession in a decade, as well as record-high inflation and a currency that has lost more than 12 per cent of its value against the dollar this year alone.&nbsp;
