Former US president Donald Trump has given sworn testimony on Wednesday in response to a defamation lawsuit by magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll, who claims that he sexually assaulted her in a department store dressing room in the mid-1990s.

Carroll's attorneys had the opportunity to question Trump during the deposition over the alleged assault as well as remarks he made in 2019 when she first shared her account in public.

The deposition's outcome was not immediately made public. It's also not clear if Trump appeared physically or via video link.

“We’re pleased that on behalf of our client, E. Jean Carroll, we were able to take Donald Trump’s deposition today. We are not able to comment further,” the law firm representing her, Kaplan Hecker & Fink, said in a statement.

Trump has said Carroll’s rape allegation is “a hoax and a lie.”

An upcoming book titled ‘The Divider: Trump in the White House 2017-2021’, reveals that former US President Donald Trump was afraid that Iran will assassinate him as revenge for the US drone strike that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani. The authors also report that Trump and his advisers considered additional strikes against the country but later backed off.

Although the book is to be published in the US next week, the British daily newspaper, the Guardian was able to procure a copy. Written by a husband-and-wife team, Peter Baker and Susan Glasser, the book reportedly gives a detailed account of how Trump, while bragging about the strike in public and in front of the media, was not so bullish, at least in private, less than a year later.

Baker and Glasser also map out the former president’s policy on Iran, which begins with reluctant talks regarding the nuclear deal signed during Barack Obama’s presidency to the US’s withdrawal in May 2018 and the point in June 2019 when Trump ordered air strikes against the country but called them off at the last minute.

“I thought about it for a second and I said, ‘You know what, they shot down an unmanned drone … and here we are sitting with 150 dead people that would have taken place probably within a half an hour after I said go ahead.’ And I didn’t like it…I didn’t think it was proportionate,” Trump reportedly reasoned at the time. It was later revealed that among the people who advised Trump against ordering the strikes in Iran was Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson.

However, the former president went on to authorise the strike against Soleimani. Subsequently, the Pentagon said that the Iranian general had been actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region”. Soleimani was the commander of a US-designated terrorist group called the elite Quds (Jerusalem) force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps.

The Iranian general was among those killed on 3 January 2020, along with some of the officials from Iran-backed Iraqi militias, as they were leaving the Baghdad airport. Soleimani’s death sent shockwaves across the world, while critics called it a reckless escalation of the tensions between Tehran and Washington, some even fearing a full-fledged war. Meanwhile, the country’s leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called it a “forceful revenge” and declared three-day national mourning for the Iranian general.

This reportedly did not stop the former president from bragging about it in a rally in Ohio, “We stopped him and we stopped him quickly and we stopped him cold,” said Trump. He added, “He was a bad guy. He was a bloodthirsty terrorist, and he’s no longer a terrorist. He’s dead.”

Later that year, Iran’s supreme leader also took to Twitter and said, “Those who ordered the murder of General Soleimani as well as those who carried this out should be punished. This revenge will certainly happen at the right time.” The authors of the book reported that even though Trump and his advisers were planning another strike, they later called it off because it was too close to the end of Trump’s presidency.

“At a cocktail party, Trump told several of his Florida friends he was afraid Iran would try to assassinate him, so he had to go back to Washington where he would be safer,” the authors wrote. This was just before the former president returned to Washington and “turned up the heat on Mike Pence”, the former vice-president who was pressured by Trump to block the electoral college results confirming his defeat to Joe Biden.

According to a report by New York Times, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has issued nearly 40 subpoenas in the past week and seized the phones of two top advisers to former President Donald Trump. This comes amid the ongoing investigation into Trump’s efforts to delegitimize the 2020 Presidential election and the deadly insurrection by his supporters on January 6, 2021, at the Capitol.

The people who have received the subpoenas this week range from some of the former president’s low-level aides to the senior advisers who were a part of his cabinet. This included Dan Scavino, Trump’s former social media director, the report said. Meanwhile, the phones of Boris Epshteyn (a longtime adviser) and Mike Roman (Trump’s campaign strategist) got seized as evidence following the Justice department’s issuance of search warrants.

Both Epshteyn and Roman were reportedly involved in a ‘fake electors effort’, where the plan was to submit slates of electors pledged to Trump living in swing states that Joe Biden had already won. These steps have been some of the “most aggressive” ones taken by the department so far amid the ongoing investigation, said the report.

In a new court filing the US justice department has said that the top secret documents found at Donald Trump's Florida home were deliberately concealed to obstruct the FBI probe into the former US president Donald Trump's mishandling of classified materials.

In other news, as per reports, the Biden administration intends to ask the US Congress to approve an estimated $1.1 billion arms sale to Taiwan. In other news, after the FBI raid on Trump’s residence, a number of documents were discovered to be under attorney-client privilege. Morning news headline: Iraq army declares curfew, Biden plans $1.1 billion arms sale for Taiwan, & more

Leaders and funders of the Republican Party are suddenly vocalising their concern about their election prospects.

It appeared certain that their party would win both the US House and the Senate in 2022 five months ago. Republicans seemed prepared to extend their advantages over Democrats in terms of the number of governorships and state legislatures they now hold. And best of all, it appeared that they had subtly disregarded former President Donald Trump.

Their future seems uncertain right now. Price drops for gasoline have occurred. Since Roe v. Wade was overruled by the Supreme Court, pro-abortion voters have increased, including those nonreligious but otherwise conservative women who might have voted Republican.

Their chances of winning the Senate are over since Trump interfered in primaries and nominated a number of undesirable candidates in swing states that needed to win. Politico published remarks from the Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel's tense conference call with significant donors on Wednesday. Small-donation amounts to Senate candidates have dramatically decreased, despite a rise in Democratic financing, as per The Atlantic.

Worst of all, in the eyes of Republican leaders, Trump's support among tribal Republicans has increased as a result of the execution of a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago. In a potential primary election in 2024, the search increased his fundraising to $1 million a day and contributed to his growing lead over Governor Ron DeSantis. According to a poll cited by NBC, Trump and DeSantis were neck-and-neck in a field of candidates. After the search, he outscored DeSantis 52–20. Republican leaders are aware that Trump is a loser in the general election, despite the fact that the Republican base loves him. Trump leading the ticket in 2024 is a recipe for disaster; simply a reminder that Trump is still at large in 2022 harms the down-ballot candidates. Republican leaders have begged with Trump to postpone any declaration of a 2024 election because of this.

Biden's plan to cut student loan debt will only make things worse for the GOP. The Democratic Party's biggest challenge going into this election was the lack of interest among younger voters. Only approximately 28% of voters under 35 indicated "strong interest" in the 2022 election earlier this year. That's the same as in 2014, a disastrous year for Democrats, and significantly below the 39% who indicated "strong interest" at this point in 2018, a good year for Democrats. Biden has now significantly benefited people who have student loan debt. They will act as a solid barrier against any red flood if they turn out to vote for him and reward him.

When it comes to purchasing votes ahead of elections, Republicans are not helpless victims. President Trump increased payments to farm families by almost quadruple, from $11.5 billion in 2017 to $32 billion in 2020, in order to ease the pain of his trade war with China before of the 2020 election. But compared to Trump's agriculture subsidy, Biden's initiative to reduce student loan debt is significantly higher, costing at least $330 billion over 10 years and maybe as much as $1 trillion.

The message for Republican donors and leaders is that supporting Trump will cost money. The GOP's chances of winning the election are being harmed by Trump and pro-Trump candidates. Trump lost the 2020 presidential election. The GOP's control of the US Senate was lost in 2021 due to pro-Trump candidates. More Trump-supporting politicians are falling terribly.

In 2021, Trump tried one strategy to get out of this jam: he violently overthrew the results of his election. That did not succeed.
State-level pro-Trump politicians have tried alternative strategies, such as altering election laws to their advantage. At the edges, that might work. Marginal advantages might not be sufficient in the event of a major event, such as the overturning of Roe v. Wade. A party needs a wide coalition in order to continuously win. A party that continues to disenfranchise large groups of voters by putting forth extremists, felons, and outlandish candidates is a party that has given up on governing. Republicans are currently assessing the price of such abdication in terms of dollars and cents. According to the National Taxpayers Union Foundation, student debt relief will cost the typical taxpayer $2,000 on average.

The cost of Trump to the Republican Party and its supporters is much greater than just that one remark. Republicans won't understand that he and his faction won't go away on their own until more laws are introduced. They'll need to take hold of him and push him out the door with their own hands if they want to see his back. If they don't, their contributors should get used to receiving more significant donations for more Democratic candidates in the upcoming election cycles.

Republican investment in Trump and its increasing cost

There's a political turmoil over search of Trump's Mar-A-Lago home intensifies. The former American President has now asked the judge to halt the justice department's investigation of the file being seized from his home until a special master is appointed.
