The Indian chapter of Swedish smartphone application Truecaller was raided by Indian tax officials on Thursday (Nov 7) over an alleged violation of transfer pricing regulation action. The raids were carried out at several locations, including Gurugram in Haryana state and&nbsp;Bengaluru in Karnataka. The application, used for features like calling ID and spam blocking by more than 400 million customers in India, is under scrutiny for alleged tax evasion.

News agency PTI reported that the IT department officers conducted searches to gather information and peruse documents to detect potential tax evasion.

Later, Truecaller in a statement also confirmed its offices were visited by IT officials and said it was fully ready to cooperate with the authorities.

“This came without prior notice and Truecaller is currently awaiting official confirmation and communication from the tax departments,” the company said in a statement.

“This is not an uncommon practice and Truecaller will cooperate fully with the relevant authorities,” Truecaller added.

It also stressed that it is "not subject to any tax investigation in India outside the routine tax audits" and that it has "always paid all taxes due in India and all regions where it operates."

Addressing the concerns over transfer pricing regulation, Truecaller said its policy is in line with international standards.

“The purpose is to ensure that Truecaller pays tax in a way that is correct from the perspective of both the Swedish and the Indian tax authorities. The policy is continuously independently reviewed to ensure that it meets the tax law requirements of both countries,” the company noted.

In the viral video, the student introduced herself as Ekta. She was asked 'what brought her to Canada'. In the video, Ekta can be heard saying that it was her 'dream to leave India'. The reply didn't go down well with many social media users on 'X', the renamed platform of good ol' Twitter.

'Brain drain' is something that is scoffed at in India. Highly qualified youngsters sometimes choose to seek employment in western countries after studying in elite institutes in India like India Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Management and so on. Those who profess their opposition to 'brain drain' say that these students take benefits of considerable subsidies on their education but create wealth for foreign companies and nations by working and settling there.&nbsp;

At the same time, those studying in institutes in India and abroad say that their hard work and merit has earned them admission to these prestigious institutions and it's a matter of personal choice which country they choose to settle in.

Ekta's video elicited reactions on similar lines. She was criticised based on perception that she was trying to show India in poor light and was encouraging leaving home country.

But Ekta got support from unexpected quarters when none other than the CEO of Truecaller rallied behind her.&nbsp;

"People really want to misunderstand her to make fun of her. This is not OK!! Ekta, don't listen to all these clowns making fun of you. I think you're cool and living the dream! According to online intelligence firm Cyble, "Researchers have identified a reputable seller, who is selling 47.5 million Indians Truecaller records for USD 1,000 (about Rs 75,000). The data is from 2019. We were also taken off by surprise with such a low price point,".

"Cyble researchers are progressing with their analysis, but clearly, this leak may have a potential impact on broader users in India such as spams, scams, identity thefts etc. We will update this blog as we get more information," Cyble said.&nbsp;

When contacted, a Truecaller spokesperson said, "There has been no breach of our database and all our user information is secure. We take the privacy of our users and the integrity of our services extremely seriously and we are continuously monitoring for suspicious activities."

According to the report, India's 1.5 per cent decrease in spam calls per user has put it on the second spot, <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/facebooks-whatsapp-taking-legal-action-against-brazil-election-spammers-172412">while Brazil has zoomed past</a> to the first position with an 81 per cent increase in spam calls in a year.&nbsp;

In its survey that screened 74 billion calls, <a href="http://www.wionews.com/business-economy/smartphones-booming-indias-electronics-manufacturing-sector-173345">it was found that 17.7 billion calls were spam</a>. Users in Brazil received 37.5 spam calls per month whereas Indian users received 22.3 calls per month. Chile came a close third with 22.9 spam calls and South Africa followed next with 21.

"As a platform, we don’t mark any number as spam, it is completely user-generated. Every time you get a call you have the right to edit the name. Many a time you see on the interface names like insurance scam, credit card scam and the like. This is how the user warns others. Our user community is very active and helps identify such culprits," says Manan Shah, Director of marketing, Truecaller.

Overall India continues to top the charts when it comes to sheer volume of spam calls.

According to the survey, the US that featured high on the list last year, significantly dropped down to the eighth position. But Brazil and most other emerging markets have seen a spurt in the volume of calls and the percentage of spam calls. As per numbers, every fourth call is a spam call in India.

"Our hypothesis of what happened in Brazil is that there is a shift in terms of new technology with phones and smartphones which has led to an 80 per cent surge which is unprecedented. It is quite possible it could happen in India. In fact, as per the numbers that we have, every fourth call is a spam call in India," says Manan Shah.

What is more worrying for India is the two-fold increase in scam calls. From 3 per cent, the number has more than doubled to 7 per cent. Scam or fraudulent calls are those where callers attempt to cheat users of their money by posing as bank or insurance agents.

While the calls are a nuisance, Santhosh Kumar, a cybersecurity expert in Bengaluru says that the problem is much deeper than that. The high level of such unsolicited calls indicates data theft.

"Spam callers that are not registered call centres use all kinds of data. Data can be procured from the internet specific to a city, telecom providers or even a locality. This data is available for a price range of Rs 2,000 to Rs 20,000. The data is used around election time extensively to reach out to voters. Every application that you have shared your data with can leak it. No specific mandate has been given by the government on who can manage this data. No one knows whether this data is securely kept or misused," says Santosh.

The laws are there, but it is not specific to data theft. These regulations come under TRAI and DoT and not IPC or IT Act. TRAI enables DND numbers, but it doesn’t stop the spam caller from using another SIM card and calling you," Santhosh adds. &nbsp;

In July 2018, TRAI came out with a new set of regulations with the intention of containing pesky spam calls.

According to the new regulations, telecom operators are expected to ensure that communication takes place only through registered senders and with subscribers' consent.

However, the impact of these rules do not reflect in the survey and interestingly 90 per cent of the spam calls in India come from the operators themselves.

Overall India continues to top the charts when it comes to sheer volume of spam calls. According to the survey, the US that featured high on the list last year, significantly dropped down to the eighth position. But Brazil and most other emerging markets have seen a spurt in the volume of calls and the percentage of spam calls. As per numbers, every fourth call is a spam call in India. "Our hypothesis of what happened in Brazil is that there is a shift in terms of new technology with phones and smartphones which has led to an 80 per cent surge which is unprecedented. It is quite possible it could happen in India. In fact, as per the numbers that we have, every fourth call is a spam call in India," says Manan Shah. What is more worrying for India is the two-fold increase in scam calls. From 3 per cent, the number has more than doubled to 7 per cent. Scam or fraudulent calls are those where callers attempt to cheat users of their money by posing as bank or insurance agents. While the calls are a nuisance, Santhosh Kumar, a cybersecurity expert in Bengaluru says that the problem is much deeper than that. The high level of such unsolicited calls indicates data theft. "Spam callers that are not registered call centres use all kinds of data. Data can be procured from the internet specific to a city, telecom providers or even a locality. This data is available for a price range of Rs 2,000 to Rs 20,000. The data is used around election time extensively to reach out to voters. Every application that you have shared your data with can leak it. No specific mandate has been given by the government on who can manage this data. No one knows whether this data is securely kept or misused," says Santosh. The laws are there, but it is not specific to data theft. These regulations come under TRAI and DoT and not IPC or IT Act. TRAI enables DND numbers, but it doesn’t stop the spam caller from using another SIM card and calling you," Santhosh adds. In July 2018, TRAI came out with a new set of regulations with the intention of containing pesky spam calls. According to the new regulations, telecom operators are expected to ensure that communication takes place only through registered senders and with subscribers' consent. However, the impact of these rules do not reflect in the survey and interestingly 90 per cent of the spam calls in India come from the operators themselves.

An average Truecaller user in Brazil has received 37.5 spam calls per month compared to 22.3 calls per month in India.

With increasing spammed calls Chile, South Africa and Mexico occupy the next three places in the list.

In a statement released Truecaller said that operators and telecom service providers are the top spammers in the country.

The communication app also added that it had identified and blocked over 17 billion spam calls across the world.
