19 killed in Gujarat after truck overturns

Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Anantkumar Hegde on Tuesday claimed that a “deliberate attempt” was made on his life when a truck hit his escort vehicle in Karnataka's Haveri district.&nbsp;

Hegde was traveling near Halageri in Ranebennur taluk of Haveri district around 11:30 p.m. when the incident took place. Police have arrested the truck driver.

The minister posted a video and pictures on his Twitter account, saying that a truck tried to ram into his escort vehicle when he was travelling on the national highway near Halageri in Ranebennur taluk of Haveri district in poll-bound Karnataka. “Since our vehicle was on top speed we escaped the hit,” the minister said.

According to primary information, the casualties might go up as many more people were trapped inside the vehicle.

The mini-truck fell off the Jogdaha bridge near Amelia in Bahri police station area of the district, &nbspSidhi District Collector Dilip Kumar told PTI. The bus fell about 60-70-foot down on to the dry riverbed.

The site is about 42 km from the Sidhi district headquarters, he said. The injured were admitted to the district hospital.

Expressing deep sorrow over the accident, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced an assistance of Rs. 2 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 each to the injured, the district collector said.

After 9,000km of brutal racing across Peru, Bolivia and Argentina the competitors finally crossed the finish line of the 2018 Dakar Rally in C&oacute;rdoba.

Carlos Sainz, Matthias Walkner, Ignacio Casale and Eduard Nikolaev all carried big leads heading into the final 120km special stage around the home of rallying in Argentina and were not to be denied.

For Walkner, it was a maiden victory in the toughest rally raid on the planet, a second for Sainz and Casale while Nikolaev now has a hat-trick of truck titles.

The experience was the name of the game for Carlos Sainz claiming a second Dakar victory and his first since 2010. The Spaniard had it all to lose going into the final few stages but kept his cool and controlled the race perfectly.

Sainz, 55, said: &ldquo;I am extremely happy for me and everyone behind the victory. It was hard when you have such a big lead as it is easy to start making mistakes. This was the hardest Dakar I have ever done, including the ones in Africa.&rdquo;

The 31-year-old has been a consistent presence towards the front of the pack throughout the race and in a stage won by Kevin Benavides, Walkner brought his KTM home in eighth to start the party.

Walkner said: &ldquo;When you are leading with such a big gap in the biggest event in our sport, it was crazy. Now it is time to celebrate. I was never the guy who was winning a lot or losing a lot, just riding always near the front.&rdquo;

The 40th edition of Dakar rally ends in Argentina

Seven people&nbsp;including a child&nbsp;died and at least 20 suffered injuries in a bus-truck collision in the Southern part of Bangladesh on Friday night. &nbsp;

Media reports said that the accident happened near the Gopalganj area when a passenger bus travelling to Pirojpur district hit a truck parked on the Dhaka-Khulna highway.&nbsp;

The injured were immediately taken to the hospital.&nbsp;

According to media reports, five people had died on the way to the hospital and a baby boy succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

20 killed as truck topples onto van in Pakistan

Five suspects have been formally charged over the truck terror attack in the French riveria city of Nice that killed 84 people, the Paris prosecutor said on Thursday. 
 
Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, who mowed down a crowd enjoying Bastille Day fireworks display, had long plotted the carnage, prosecutor Francois Molins said. 
 
The revelations come as the French government continues to be plagued by questions over possible security failings, prompting authorities to launch an investigation into potential oversights. 
 
Molins said photos on Bouhlel&#39;s phone showed he had likely already staked out the same July 14 event in 2015. 
 
It also emerged that one of the five suspects in custody, a Tunisian named Mohamed Oualid G, had filmed the scene the day after the carnage, as it crawled with paramedics and journalists. 
 
The five were brought before anti-terrorism judges late Thursday and charged. 
 
They are 22-year-old Franco-Tunisian Ramzi A, 37-year-old Tunisian Chokri C, 40-year-old Tunisian Mohamed Oualid G, 38-year-old Albanian Artan H, and his wife Enkeledja Z who holds both French and Albanian nationality. 
 
None were known to intelligence services, and only Ramzi A, who was born in Nice, had a criminal record, for robbery and drug offences. 
 
He led police to a Kalashnikov and a bag of ammunition on Thursday, however the purpose of the weapons was unclear. 
 
Ramzi, Chokri and Oualid were charged with being accomplices to murder by a terror group.

In April this year, Chokri C sent Bouhlel a Facebook message reading: &quot;Load the truck with 2,000 tonnes of iron... release the brakes my friend and I will watch&quot;. 
 
Investigators also found a text message in Bouhlel&#39;s phone from Mohamed Oualid in January 2015, roughly a year after attacks on the Charlie Hebdo satirical weekly which spawned the hashtag &quot;I am Charlie&quot; in support of those killed. 
 
The message read: &quot;I am not Charlie... I am happy they have brought soldiers of Allah to finish the job.&quot; 
 
Analyses of Bouhlel&#39;s computer and cellphone showed a wide range of images and internet searches showing a fascination with violence and jihadist movements such as al-Qaeda and IS. 
 
His family and friends have described him as violent and possibly suffering from mental illness.

State of emergency extended&nbsp; 
 
French President Francois Hollande on Thursday promised &quot;truth and transparency&quot; from an inquiry into allegations of lax security.

Transforming a vehicle into a simple but deadly weapon of terror, as happened to such bloody effect in Nice on Thursday, is a tactic well known to intelligence agencies. 
 
A truck smashed into revellers celebrating France&#39;s Bastille Day, killing at least 84 and injuring scores, as its ploughed two kilometres through the crowd. 
 
In Israel and the Palestinian territories, car-ramming attacks have featured heavily in a wave of violence that has killed at least 215 Palestinians, 34 Israelis, two Americans, an Eritrean and a Sudanese since October last year. 
 
Western authorities have had to deal with three similar attacks in recent years: two in Britain and another in Canada. 
 
In May 2013, two Islamists smashed their car into British soldier Lee Rigby before attempting to behead him on a London street in broad daylight. 
 
The pair, who were of Nigerian heritage, said they attacked the 25-year-old fusilier to avenge the deaths of Muslims at the hands of British troops. 
 
Just 18 months later, a man claiming to be acting in the name of radical jihad ran over and killed Canadian soldier Patrice Vincent, also injuring a second man.

Nice attack clearly of terrorist nature, says Hollande

About 30 000 were out celebrating France&rsquo;s Bastille Day, their day of liberty. Many families stayed up late to watch the fireworks. Eyewitnesses say the truck was driving at full speed towards the crowds, zigzagging to ensure the driver hit as many people as possible. Parents were seen frantically throwing their children out of harm&rsquo;s way. 
 
The driver, a 31-year-old Frenchman of Tunisian descent, was shot dead by police at the scene. He has been identified by local media as Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel. Guns and a grenade were found inside the truck but are reported to be fakes. 
 
According to Tunisian security sources, the attacker Lahouaiej-Bouhlel was married and had three children. He visited Tunisia frequently, the last time eight months ago. 
 
Lahouaiej-Bouhlel had been in trouble with the police in the past for petty crime, but he was not on the watch list of radicalised young men. 
 
A photograph showed the front of the truck riddled with bullet holes and badly damaged, with burst tyres. 
 
A lone doll lay abandoned on the promenade where families celebrated the holiday just hours earlier. 
 
Robert Holloway, an AFP reporter who witnessed the white truck driving at speed into the crowd, described scenes of &quot;absolute chaos&quot;. 
 
&quot;We saw people hit and bits of debris flying around. I had to protect my face from flying debris,&quot; Holloway said.

The French police are still dealing with a scene of a mass murder that extends over two kilometres. Before there can be tributes to the victims, they have to fully investigate and clear the crime scene.
