As many as 140 people were injured after a passenger train derailed in Russia's Volgograd region on Monday (Jul 28),&nbsp;the country’s state-owned railway company said.

According to&nbsp;reports, the train, travelling at 65 kmph, collided with a truck that drove into a railroad crossing at 12:35 local time. Nine passenger cars were derailed as authorities attempted to get a clear picture of the impact of the accident.&nbsp;

The train was travelling from Kazan in&nbsp;Tatarstan to Adler on the Black Sea when the accident took place near the&nbsp;Kotelnikovo station about 1,200 km (750 miles) south of Moscow.&nbsp;

A freight train derailment occurred in the western Russian region bordering Ukraine, on Tuesday (May 2), for the second day in a row due to an “explosive device” on the tracks, said the governor of Russia’s Bryansk region.&nbsp;

Media reports citing local officials have said that the locomotive and some cars of the train were derailed after a similar incident occurred, on Monday, near Unecha where the locomotive and seven freight wagons were derailed.&nbsp;

The incident, on Tuesday, occurred in the western Bryansk region, which borders both Ukraine and Belarus where Russian officials have reported multiple attacks by pro-Ukrainian sabotage groups since Moscow invaded Kyiv over a year ago.&nbsp;

In a statement, the Bryansk region governor Alexander Bogomaz said, “An unidentified explosive device went off near the Snezhestkaya railway station,” as quoted by the news agency AFP. He added, “A locomotive and several wagons of the train derailed,” adding that there were no casualties. He also did not indicate who was responsible for the incident.&nbsp;

Russian Railways also released a statement without mentioning an explosive device, and said that the train had derailed due to “the intervention of unauthorised persons in the work of rail transport”.&nbsp;

The state operator also confirmed that the incident took place at 7:47 pm (local time) between Snezhetskaya, just to the southeast of Bryansk, and the nearby village of Belye Berega where the rail traffic has&nbsp;been suspended. The railway authorities also said the train’s front locomotive and “around 20 wagons” were derailed.&nbsp; 
 
Meanwhile, the Russian news agency TASS&nbsp;citing officials reported&nbsp;that&nbsp;firefighters were working at the scene and two recovery trains had been dispatched to the area. The local prosecutors have also launched an investigation into the incident, said news agency.&nbsp;

What happened on Monday?

This comes a day after Bogomaz took to Telegram and wrote, “An unidentified explosive device went off, as a result of which a locomotive of a freight train derailed,” adding that there were “no casualties”. Images and videos from the site shared on social media platforms showed plumes of dark grey smoke rising into the air and several tank carriages also seen lying on their side.&nbsp;

The incident occurred at 10:17 am (Moscow time) between regional hub Bryansk and the town of Unecha and the train was reportedly carrying oil products and timber. Notably, the governor of the northern Leningrad region, Alexander Drozdenko, on Monday had said that local power lines were blown up by an “explosive device.”

‘Explosive device’ causes another freight train derailment in Russian region near Ukraine

The Associated Press quoted Sheriff Eric Tollefson, who said that the train "had numerous rail cars derail" and several had caught fire.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told CNN that about 14 cars were carrying hazardous materials, including ethanol.

“We’ve been in touch with the governor,” Buttigieg said, and Environmental Protection Agency officials were en route to the site “given the hazardous material situation.”

Buttigieg reportedly said that he has not received any reports of deaths or injuries.

Railroad safety has been in the spotlight nationally ever since last month’s fiery derailment of a Norfolk Southern train near East Palestine, Ohio. Roughly half of that town of about 5,000 people near the Pennsylvania border had to be evacuated after officials decided to release and burn toxic chemicals.

Uttar Pradesh: 22 injured as Mahakaushal Express derails near Mahoba

At least five coaches of the Kurla-Ambernath local train derailed between Kalyan-Vitthalwadi at around 5:53 a.m. today.

No injuries have been reported so far.

The services on Kalyan-Karjat route have been temporarily suspended.

The Central Railways has requested local Municipal Corporation to run extra buses between Kalyan and Ambernath to reduce the inconvenience caused to the daily passengers.

Several trains have been diverted and cancelled in the wake of the accident.22105 CST-Pune Indrayani Express has been diverted through Diva-Panvel-Karjat, while CST-Pune Deccan Queen and CST-Pune Intercity Express have been cancelled.

This comes a day after coaches of the 12987 Sealdah-Ajmer Express went off track when the train was crossing a bridge over a dry canal, nearly 70 km from Kanpur.

Two coaches toppled off the bridge and fell into the canal bed.

At least five coaches of the Kurla-Ambernath local train derailed between Kalyan-Vitthalwadi at around 5:53 a.m. today. No injuries have been reported so far. The services on Kalyan-Karjat route have been temporarily suspended. The Central Railways has requested local Municipal Corporation to run extra buses between Kalyan and Ambernath to reduce the inconvenience caused to the daily passengers. Several trains have been diverted and cancelled in the wake of the accident.22105 CST-Pune Indrayani Express has been diverted through Diva-Panvel-Karjat, while CST-Pune Deccan Queen and CST-Pune Intercity Express have been cancelled. This comes a day after coaches of the 12987 Sealdah-Ajmer Express went off track when the train was crossing a bridge over a dry canal, nearly 70 km from Kanpur. Two coaches toppled off the bridge and fell into the canal bed. (ANI)
